Vasks' works really hit hard when one is least expecting it...
This is a gorgeous, transformative piece. I have recently discovered Vasks and I am loving his music. I don't see the opening as weak, but rather introspective and contemplative.
Can you imagine? His second work for cello and orchestra. This work was commissioned for Ms. Gabetta by the composer approximately fifteen years after she heard or read his searing cello solo at 18 Gramata cellam.
certainly, this is amazing
Another great piece by Vasks
Beautiful! I have Deutsche Welle to thank for making me aware of this incredible pairing of Vasks and Gambetta

*Gabetta :-) tho I like Gambetta too (little gamba?)
wielki kompozytor i wielka wykonawczyni
You are very good and Vasks is really brilliant! My choir sang "Pater Noster" during one of our last performances. Write this in the search. You're going to love it for sure! Corale Novarmonia - Pater Noster (P. Vasks)
You end up in a cold room, dark and empty. Closed windows, locked doors. Your eyes have adapted to the small light that seeps into the holes of your curtains. You stand in the middle of the room and you have finally become this "entity" you had seen in a strange and penetrating dream!
Beautifull music, awesome

Sol Gabetta is an Argentine cellist. The daughter of Andrés Gabetta and Irène Timacheff-Gabetta, she has French and Russian ancestry. Argentine like Daniel Barenboim, Martha Argerich, Lalo Schifrin & Astor Piazzolla
Despite a weak, weak opening it develops nicely. But in my opinion, NOT one of Vasks's better pieces.

My introduction to Vask. I was all set to move on... and then I got to the fifth minute or so and said, Wow.

I completely disagree, I LOVE the opening. It's passionate, intimate, and meaningful. Not to mention that it's rare for composers to be able to beautifully start a concerto with a cadenza.
