This is the first time I’ve heard the original version of this song, and boy, it blows the Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crow versions out of the water. When Arnold sings that the first cut is the deepest, there’s actual emotion in her voice that tells you how much she was affected by that first relationship. Crow and Stewart, meanwhile, sing it so blandly, as if they were telling you they like eating cereal in the morning. This is definitely the best version of this song by far.

Patricia Ann Cole ("P.P. Arnold") was only 20 -- and fresh out of a Los Angeles ghetto -- when she recorded this. It was written by a then-totally-unknown British man named Steven Demetre Georgiou -- who took on the stage name, "Cat Stevens" (and later renamed himself Yusuf Islam. He was just 19, even younger than Miss Arnold, who bought the song from him for £30. Life has many twists and turns.

I was literally watching the scene in episode 3 of I Know This Much Is True where this songs plays over Dominic and Dessa’s traumatic attempt to keep that first spark of their love going and then... my first love texted me out of the blue at 1030am on a Monday morning. 😳 She will forever be the love of my life, as she has told me many times how I am the same for her. At 43 years old, there’s an ocean of time and missed chances and painful moments between us, but Goddamnit that indescribable and agonizingly beautiful feeling in my chest still makes my heart jump up and down like a kid on a playground. Might be time to get up off these mood swings and take one last spin on the merry-go-round.

While I love this song and love her voice, this version is a little over produced for my tastes. Still prefer Cat and Rod's versions better.
