I was shocked and saddened to learn that Peter Schickele died on January 16/24. I was crushed to find out. I had just discovered this channel and felt like a kid in a candy store, listening to things I had not heard in 50+ years.

Sweet thing, isn't it? It's so nice they can make fun and bring some laughter into the concert room. Children and adults, all have fun for the same silly reason, and it's brilliant!

I remember watching this "Evening at Pops" broadcast years ago. Those who could entertain such as Mr. Schickele and Victor Borge, help remind me how much we should take joy in making music.

When I heard of the Professor's passing, this, for some reason, was the first piece I thought of. I saw it on public TV when it originally aired. I thought it was so "cool" that Itzhak Perlman was clowning around on stage while still being a virtuosic player. I was already a Perlman fan, but soon became a student of the works of P.D.Q. Bach. The 1712 Overture and Bach Portrait will always hold a special place in my heart.

Along with Dudley Moore, Anna Russell, Leonid Hambro, Flanders & Swann, and Gerard Hoffnung on the program, that would indeed be the ultimate musical parody concert. But it will be performed only in the celestial concert halls, from which mere mortals' ears will be able to catch only the faintest echoes of uproarious laughter.

I've never had much use for people who call themselves "serious" musicians. I taught music almost thirty years and I developed a philosophy. Music is a toy. That's why we say we 'play' music not 'work' music. Never forget to have fun. We practice to get better so we can have more and more fun.

Absolutely gorgeous show. I love these classical music comedy shows like Victor Borge's or something else like this. Creating joy, as always should be. Unless, we will feel lone and lone in this blue planet which is not even recognizable in the whole universe. We only have us, just have fun with eachother.

Surprised to see this. It must be Peter Schickele's second appearance with the Boston Pops as I have an audio tape of another appearance with Arthur Fiedler conducting. And it looks like John Williams had as much fun as Mr. Fiedler did. That broadcast was for WCRB Night at the Pops.
