Peter Schickele and Itzhak Perlman being conducted by John Williams is something you never thought you needed until now

He spent his whole life composing, so now may he decompose in peace.
RIP Peter Schickele, bringer of Joy.
I was shocked and saddened to learn that Peter Schickele died on January 16/24. I was crushed to find out. I had just discovered this channel and felt like a kid in a candy store, listening to things I had not heard in 50+ years.
I love how the professor integrates Hava Nagila & Batman into the same piece 😂
Perlman, Schickele and Williams--Damn! That's FUN!!
Hilarious, plus Williams has the orchestra in great shape, and Perlman never stops shining.
Sweet thing, isn't it? It's so nice they can make fun and bring some laughter into the concert room. Children and adults, all have fun for the same silly reason, and it's brilliant!

I remember watching this "Evening at Pops" broadcast years ago. Those who could entertain such as Mr. Schickele and Victor Borge, help remind me how much we should take joy in making music.
PDQ Bach is a national treasure.
Schickele's ability compose classical music is remarkable. It's not at all easy.
When I heard of the Professor's passing, this, for some reason, was the first piece I thought of. I saw it on public TV when it originally aired. I thought it was so "cool" that Itzhak Perlman was clowning around on stage while still being a virtuosic player. I was already a Perlman fan, but soon became a student of the works of P.D.Q. Bach. The 1712 Overture and Bach Portrait will always hold a special place in my heart.
A live show with PDQ and Victor Borge would be heaven on earth. If only I could go back in time!

Along with Dudley Moore, Anna Russell, Leonid Hambro, Flanders & Swann, and Gerard Hoffnung on the program, that would indeed be the ultimate musical parody concert. But it will be performed only in the celestial concert halls, from which mere mortals' ears will be able to catch only the faintest echoes of uproarious laughter.
Absolutely priceless… RIP Maestro Schickele….
Just read an obit of Peter Schickele in the New York Times. Haven't thought about him in decades. Had two of his albums, and attended one concert in NYC. RIP Peter. No doubt you're killing it in heaven.
Itzhak Perlman makes a wonderful foil for Peter Schickele. I got to see Peter Schickele decades ago. The program was billed as "PDQ Bach vs The Oklahoma Youth Orchestra".
What a great start to my day. Had me smiling the whole piece thru. Loved the participation by Perlman - what a good sport. Another PDQ Bach masterpiece !
Was für ein Mensch!
One of my colleagues studied under Schickele at Juliard. I wish I could have met him.
Fabulous
I love where Peter Schickele moves the viiolin along the bow (approx. 5:07-5:26)
I've never had much use for people who call themselves "serious" musicians. I taught music almost thirty years and I developed a philosophy. Music is a toy. That's why we say we 'play' music not 'work' music. Never forget to have fun. We practice to get better so we can have more and more fun.
Just a joy to watch genius at work and bring some much needed humor into the world.
Absolutely gorgeous show. I love these classical music comedy shows like Victor Borge's or something else like this. Creating joy, as always should be. Unless, we will feel lone and lone in this blue planet which is not even recognizable in the whole universe. We only have us, just have fun with eachother.

This planet may not be much in the whole Universe, but I can guarantee you that the sounds of Joy and laughter that two men like this make reverberate throughout the Cosmos and are heard by the angels in heaven (wherever that may be).
Surprised to see this. It must be Peter Schickele's second appearance with the Boston Pops as I have an audio tape of another appearance with Arthur Fiedler conducting. And it looks like John Williams had as much fun as Mr. Fiedler did. That broadcast was for WCRB Night at the Pops.

This is almost 25 years after the first concert (which was in 1970 - this one was from 94)
Here are the violin techniques P.D.Q used in the "Konzertshtick". 0:17 - Thunfisch mit Salat (Tuning and salad) 0:45 - Pfeife Distel (Whistle thistle) 1:35 - Gioco finto (Pretend play) 2:10 - tertia avis (The third bird) 2:27 - Satz eins kopieren (Copy set one) 3:38 - ein bisschen hilfeando (A little help-ando) [This is one that P.D.Q gave the name to] 4:23 - Akkord mit einer Seite Pizzicato (Chord with a side pizzicato) 5:07 - Backiaso, aber nicht die Kehle (Back, but not the throat) 5:41 - Higho mucho (A little too high) 6:03 - Chello bello (Play like a chello) w/ Vertalica Britannica (Vertical bow of Britain)

The world is a little sadder.
This reminds me of Jack Benny with other violinists.
(0:08) One questions whether the title on screen "Konzertschitcke" was an intentional typo on the part of someone at WGBH...

I don't see how Perlman kept a straight face.
His stuff aint easy to play…
Some of my favourite PDQ Bach humour is when the music starts doing banal scales and other stock elements over and over. 😂
This is wonderful! I hope someday the video portion can be rendered to greater clarity.
I'm wondering when this was performed. I'm guessing probably early to mid '80s?
