Oystercatcher Spectacular Flight to Roost | British Birding

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Oystercatcher gatherings can be very spectacular particularly their flight to roost in large numbers at Shellness in Kent, UK. At this location Eurasian Oystercatchers, Haematopus ostralegus, feed on the mudlflats exposed at low tide and then as the tide comes in birders can watch the oystercatcher spectacular flight to roost as they move in small groups at first, then in larger numbers to collect at their high tide roost in a flock of up to 2000 birds. In this birding video I share one of my favourite birding spectacles with others.

Thanks, my favourite bird. I them tattooed on my body, such funny wee birds. Never try having a starting contest with one, you'll always lose

One of my favourites too. I don't have any tattoos but if I were to have one, an Oystercatcher would be one of the possible choices, just one point below a Dartford Warbler. Maybe get both.

Fantastic video! We have a big group of oystercatchers here in Montrose, Scotland, and they fly above the town every day- from the basin to the beach and back. I love watching them flap their wings! And the call is so cute!

They consume up to half of their own body weight in food in one feeding. Wow, that reminds me of our school dinners at Maypole Primary School in the early 80s. ..............dogs on a lead .............tides to recede I love the commentary once more and now it's getting poetic. Seriously, you wouldn't be out of place on a BBC nature programme Nick.

@@BirdingwithNick there’s a place where lots of birds land here in southern Spain, I guess some are enroute to Africa …. I’m going to rebut the place and take more interest in the birds. Last time I went, I was having to stop my springer going for a swim 🤦🏼‍♀️

I have not actually seen a Merlin take one but I while I was filming this I saw several attacks by Merlins (unsuccesful). It may be that the Merlin was going for the smaller Dunlin, Ringed Plovers or Turnstones among the flock but the general effect was to put all the birds up into the air.

Hahaha, that's good to hear, I was doing my best to build it up. It really is an adrenaline moment as they come flying past in squadrons. I stand out on the mudflats at the water's edge so some of them come past extremely close to me. Under normal circumstances I work as a birding guide & I really wanted to take people out there to see this but with the current restrictions, the video was the best I could do.

@@BirdingwithNick You have beaten any TV commentator and created an excellent best :That's the teacher in me speaking :) Love it when a huge flock of birds flies at you, past you and extremely near , The sound of their wings is amazing .I hear it with the crows in Berlin ..👍 Another thumbs up is warranted .
