Oxidized Fiberglass Gelcoat Restoration With 3m Perfect It Compound and Wax

How to do a restoration on oxidized gelcoat with 3M perfect it compound and wax. This Boston Whaler Dauntless 18 had some moderate oxidation on the hull. I go through the steps on restoring a boat gelcoat by wet sanding with Scotch-Brite Gray Pad 37448, following up with the Scotch Brite White Pad 7445 and then compounding and waxing with the 3M perfect-It products.

When I wet sand I use a bucket with water and couple drips of dish soap!! Works really well.

Used this product on all my cars and tried it on my whaler after a wetsand and its great stuff! Brough the gloss back after I wetsanded to get the nasty orange peel out of the paint.

From what I am reading, the sanding you did prior is not needed from the blend of the 3m cut. I am about to do this job on my dauntless today. Thoughts? How it holding?

IT's holding great. Wet sanding with 1000 or 1500 cuts through a lot of the oxidation so it's easier to polish.

What did you mix in the water to sand off the oxidation?

    Nothing, just plain water

I thought the Perfect-It Medium One-Step had wax in it. Why did you use a separate wax? I bought the One-Step Medium w/ Wax.

It does, I figured an extra coat of wax can only help!

Nice going, I recently bought a 92' Montauk, inside was painted whaler blue but is chipping off pretty bad, I went to clean it and even the scrub brush has knocking it off. What do you recommend doing? I'd rather it be original looking.

You can try sanding it off but you'll have to restore the gelcoat underneath. Also, scraping the loose bits off is an option as well but you'll have to be careful not to scratch the finish underneath. Personally, If at all available to you, soda blasting is probably the best bet but can be costly.

@@ExtremeDIYGuy Not bad idea, the paint is so lose that when using a plastic brush with soap on it I saw good bits of it coming off. Also I taped off a few point and when I pulled the tape back it took like 30% of the paint off. Maybe jsut a power pressure washer?

Definitely, If its that loose I would try the power washer, jut be careful to use a wide fan pattern and not get to close to the Gelcoat!

Even if you did damage the gelcoat, after sanding it, you simply roll on an epoxy barrier coat (epoxy fairing compound can be used for dings and gouges), wet sand that, and you're ready for new paint. I would use a 2 part catalyzed finish after all that work.

@@paulbriggs3072 Check out my series on restoring a classic 13 whaler. After glassing, fairing compound was what I used to level everything out, after a ton opf fairing and sanding, an epoxy barrier coat was next (3 coats) before the two part poly.

Hope the license sticker holds over the wax.

The license sticker is sticking pretty well. Like all mountains of license plate or boat registrations, impossible to peel off!
