Oxelo MF500 detailed Review - after 9 months of use.
It's been 9 months and I wanted to give a detailed review of the Oxelo MF500 Freeskate.
My interest in the Oxelo MF500 was about seeing what could be done with a skate costing only £70 (now £85).
The cost of skates can be a barrier to newcomers who may want to try skating but are dissuaded by the initial cost.
£85 is a very reasonable price, considering what you get with this skate, but can they offer a similar skating experience to the more premium brands?
Can the Oxelo MF500 deliver a premium skating experience on a budget?

Your review (content and style) is one of the best ones (if not The Best) I've seen. Thank you for this! It's a good push for beginners or ones who are getting back into inline skating after years of not. ;) Looking forward to more extensive reviews from you.

I bought these Oxelo's on your first video review/recommendation of these months ago. In the weeks since I've been practicing getting my skate up to standard for flow skates in the busy city streets of Birmingham, using a smooth and quiet nearby multistorey car park as a practice spot. It was important to me to get responsibly confident on them so that I represented the skating community well and wasn't a danger to other pedestrians. So I went out for my first flow skate last night in the thronging streets, it was fantastic and really tested all my weeks of practice on the unexpected surfaces, quick decision jumps and obstacles. I would concur with your review of these excellent skates and can't wait to get out into the streets on them again.

After 18 years without touching a pair of skates I took the fam to decathlon and we all bought a pair of these. Honestly I'm very impressed at how good they are for the price. Cheaper skates have come a long way over these two or so decades.

such a good review, rly good idea to do it after 9 months of use, also i like that youre not talking bad about features that could be better (like the straps which do their job fine), or the fact that the bearings have some resistance and could even be beneficial to a beginner, i think this approach to reviews is very important, great video again

Thanks for your comment! 🙏 I wanted it to be authentic, and I also kept the cost in mind, which is a key part of it. If you were paying more then naturally you’d expect more, but I wanted to emphasise that you get a great overall package for that price. And you really don’t need to pay a fortune for a fun skating experience, imho.

A great in depth review Rich. I looked at these a year ago when I took up skating but they were out of stock in my size. ( I later learned that sales of inline skates during lockdown have increased by 1700%!). Surprized that Oxelo said the boot wasn't heat mouldable, I'd have thought any hard plastic was heat mouldable. My Flying Eagle skates caused me extreme pain on my inside right ankle bone after only 10 minutes, and I had to heat mould them twice using a rounded wooden wedge stuck inside to hold the pressure point out while it cooled. It worked a treat and now I have zero discomfort. Having watched this review I'd definitely recommend this skate to anyone new to our group, Cheers

Very grateful for both your intial review and this one, 9 months in. I'm coming to inline-skating from skiing/snowboarding/longboarding/LDP. Basically I want a low-impact cardio workout which is 'fun'.....looks like I've found the skates to suit my needs. After perusing a confusing marketplace I've settled on the OXELO MF500's, just ordered today. I especially like the fact that you went into detail about the frame mounting options. It looks like the boys & girls at OXELO/Decathlon did their homework too; it would have been easy to go for a riveted frame/boot combo at this price-point. Thanks once again.

Excellent work, getting the feedback from from the company. I bought these skates as a complete beginner to try an learn to skate (at the ripe old age of 43). I have nothing to compare to, but I was impressed given the price. I picked them up a few months ago when they were a bit cheaper. I was wondering about replacement parts and glad they are making parts replaceable. 👍

Thanks for the review. Started from scratch 7 months ago. Felt uncomfortable in the calf from the beginning, tried some soft stuff in and changed socks thickness, so that in the end I can use them for nearly two hours with "affordable" few pain spots in my feet. Changed wheel hardness to 88 Spinner and feel lot more smooth sliding any surface (I'm a heavyweight), although the Oxelo 86A felt nice from the beginning. Still a beginner but plenty of good feeling back in reward in every session both with my teacher, a "skater from the cradle" (Spanish literal translation), and myself alone getting experience on my own. Gracias.

My daughter has asked for skates for her 13th Birthday in a couple of weeks, I skated as a kid but now at 41 I'm somewhat reluctantly going to give it another go so she'll have someone to skate with. After hours of researching much more expensive skates I've just ordered a pair of these based off of your extensive review. I figured if this guy has used these so much that they now look like my old hockey skates, they must be a decent pair especially for the price. Thank you. Unfortunately I had a accident trying some new tricks for me, my ankle bent and I will be resting for 2 weeks although I am anxious to try the skates again and continue practicing and improving, I would be happy to be able to have the security of riding with skates in the street like you. Thanks for your feedback! 🙏 I always recommend this skate to people now. Personally, I’ve had a great experience with them, and for the price, you really can’t go wrong. I agree about the liners, which is why I haven’t gone down that road to rectify the ankle discomfort, as it then makes them less cost effective, which offsets the benefits of getting them. I’m still working on it. 😁

Great review @Rich Hayter Skater, thanks a ton for the details! Your feedback along with comments all over the webz helped to make the call. Been hunting them for 2 weeks until they stocked the sizes I was looking for, interesting enough they seem to stock a few units of different sizes once every 2 days or so. As for the size, both pairs for 2 people ended up being perfect with half size up from regular shoes (43.5), 27.6cm of feet length, 43 didn't fit well, 44 was perfect fit (EU sizes).

Hey again. Couple months ago I asked you if those skates would be good for the first skates and you answered yes. I had to wait some time with my purchase because of some personal stuff to be solved and finally I can grab a pair of skates to enjoy the sport. I wanted to go for one of the more expensive rollerblades and bought FR FRX. At home I realized their liner is pretty massive and I felt a real pain in the outside mid-feet area. Tried to make it work for a few hours but the pain would only increase. So now I replaced them with the Powerslide Zoom Pro 80. At shop they felt very good. No pain, decent hold of my feet, no free space in the liner. But when I tested them at home the next day, they feel way more too loose. I don't want to return them as well because people at local shop will think I am an idiot. The biggest loose is in the upper area of the liner where it ends (tibia). I realized I put there pantlegs when I was testing it at shop. I had no such an issue in FRX because the liner was less roomy at the top. What would you do? I am afraid the Zooms might get way too loose after I burn them out. I am really thinking about returning them to the shop. Should I cut the cuff and strap at the top? Don't know if it would eventually solve the problem but I am sure that it will make it unable to return the skates.

Nice work. I like the mf500 - I actually own 2 pairs, in different locations, and might well replace one as it's a bit knackered. I like the colour of the mf900. Now if they did that with 90mm wheels... To some extent you get what you pay for. I think the liners are wearing out at twice the rate of more expensive brands. But despite all the elements seeming a bit substandard, it just seems to work pretty well as a boot. With regard to the axles, I think you should mention that the heads are ridged, so you only need one Allen key to tighten them. Personally I have no problem with 2 piece axles. It seems the simplest option for a utility skate and replacements are easier to come by.

  • @RichHayterSkater

    @RichHayterSkater

    3 жыл бұрын

Yeah, I agree about the liner, but I feel it will last well enough, and for the price it’s more than sufficient. That said, I do feel this is the main source of ankle discomfort for me. The axels are defo something I am getting used to and can actually see benefits from, as I mentioned in the review. When I first used them they really frustrated me but I have now gotten used to them and, as you say, 1 Allen key is all that’s needed, which makes them infinitely easier to work with. For the money, these are great skates! And yeah, I also really like that MF900 colour scheme! 😁

Amazing review mate. These are amazing for the price. I am using them as my primary skates now in conjunction with powerslide imperials. People who are interested in these mf500 go for 1 size smaller and then break them in. I m 43 shoe size and went for 41, in the beginning they were uncomfy but then I applied some cushioning inside where the screws are. They literally feel like glued to my feet now. Super control while jumping and backward. Groundproof wheels are excellent. I have the yellow version of these skates and can't recommend anymore. They look amazing. Great review! In my county those skates are not considered budget friendly and they were in premium section when I bought them. Getting or even finding something like Fila NRK PRO is very difficult and pricy. Nevertheless I love my MF500, they worth every penny. A few days ago was skating in rainy weather and since ground is dusty in my region all that dust turned into mud and bearings started making some strange noise. I fully disassembled my skates, removed bearings from wheels and axis were different from what I saw on other skates. Are regular aftermarket parts are suitable for mf500? The only place that sells parts for Oxelo skates is Decathlon, and they are out of stock for more than a month now.

Building breaking is my main focus at the moment so it is to be expected but still not sure of how long they will last. All and all this is probably the perfect beginner skate but even at less than €100 one should really make an effort to learn the basics and start having fun because if you are only curious and not serious about it, Oxelo sells fitness skates for half that.

The Oxelo MF500 are something really unique where the price and the quallity are extremely close to where you want them. Let me begin to tell my pros and cons, Pros: the price, it is a hard shell, the frame is solid, the skates grips around your feet, And i my self do not experience any ankle pain. Cons: the wheels do tare down fast, the ankle straps do easilly ware down but with replacements coming in the near future this shouldn’t be a problem. The bolts for the wheels suck but they work. I my self started skating about 3 months ago and ofc did not want to break the bank on a new hobby. I found these on decathlon and googled reviews and yours was the first one that popped up. So thank you for convincing me that i should buy these skates back than cause it changed these past 3 months in a massive way. My friends bought more expensive powerslide blades wich where not as supportive as mine so i was progressing really quickly compared to them. And with watching your yt channel i grown to love assault skating (as bill likes to call it), and love the grind on these. So i would also highly reccomend these skates, the first couple of times it may be hard but when you get the hang of it, you will be flying just like rich. -Mark

Thanks for the review - I bought mine after this video. :) I had some roces in the 90's but totally forget almost everything so I learn but it's fun, I like it! I have the same ankle pain you described my first thought was lace but was wrong, second the buckle but wrong again. So I started to search the pressure point and I think the problem is with the shape of the plastic boot (and with the shape of my leg). I have a Bauer hockey skate and it has some extra space for the ankle but this Oxelo is flat. Because I have thin legs (I have calf but just above my le is thin) I have to pull the top ratchet more so it pulls the flat plastic to my ankle (they aren't flat). I'll try to add some extra support below the buckle (just over my ankle) so I won't have to pull the ratchet that much... I hope it helps.

I have inner ankle pain on both sides (mf500). Its symmetrical. I looked at the liner and saw that pressure from boot compressed it so it is a part of the problem. The eyelet of the boot is the original problem. But here is the interesting thing. The pain does not stop when I put the foamy pad between the liner and the boot but does stop when I put it between the sock and the liner.

Great to get a ratchet buckle mid strap at that price, most budget skates have velcro mid straps. Also the aluminium sole plates to accommodate a good choice of frames, sounds awesome for the money. This and the Micro MT plus looks like great budget skates. And of course the FRX 80.

@@RichHayterSkater Great Job Rich, excellent skills and beautiful views! Thank you! Looking for my first skates and would be grateful for your advise - MF 500 vs FRX 80 vs RB 80 CRUISER. Will there be a noticeable difference in terms of quality and durability? The MF 500 is nearly half the price of the FR and RB. @Johro's Inline Skater Channel Johro, could you please also give your opinion?

Having never skated either of these, I can’t say too much about them. Both good brands and will no doubt be good skates. I see the FRX only has a velcro strap and I’m not sure what that would be like on a hard shell? Plus, it would seem both RB & FR only support frames with a 165mm mount, where the MF500 gives you many more options. I don’t imagine you’d go wrong with any of them, however, given the price and the quality, I’d probably still opt for the Oxelo. My first set of inlines were Seba FR1s; I decided to retire them last year because I actually preferred rolling the Oxelos. Just my personal opinion. 😁

Really loved your review. I am also looking for an affordable inline skate with quality. Fell in love with them as soon as I saw them on an online website. Is it good for beginners too? It will be my very first time. Always wanted those skates as a kid hehe but was not able to and now I am able to purchase them on my own to relive my childhood dream :D. Also with the size would you recommend one size up as I saw some people saying to take one size up than your actual size in product feedbacks? The way you rode them felt so good. Hope I could learn slowly and skate as freely as you someday :).

Hey! Glad my review helped you here and you’re taking up skating. If you can, I’d recommend going to Decathlon to try a pair for size. Mine are a half size bigger than my shoe size, but I’d check the size guide in the website to be sure. Yes, I think these would be ideal for beginners. Good luck with your new skates and your new hobby, you’re gonna love’em! 😁👍

Looking at buying a 2nd pair of more tougher skates than my Powerslides. Was looking at the Rollerblade Twister X or FR1's, but I'm honestly surprised you can get a skate that looks this much quality for this price. Still think I'll go for the FR1's though, as there must be some underlying quality difference and I hate the two-part axles. Sadly all Twister X's always seem to be sold out since last year.

Ok so I checked they have finally brought them to the states but they're $129. So it's pretty easy to find used twisters in nice condition for about $180 to $200 which have nicer boot, liner, and buckles.. And easy to find replacement parts. I recall oxelo doesn't sell replacement parts yet. But for those starting out they're pretty decent overall package for sure
