Owyhee 2021 Ep.3: Life & Death at a Desert Oasis

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In November 2021, Jason of @Primal Outdoors - Camping and Overlanding and I headed out for a new weeklong adventure in eastern Oregon, picking up where we left off last year. Our goal: extend the Bend-Alvord route through some of the most remote and spectacular backcountry Oregon has to offer. We set off on this exploratory scouting trip to check whether our tentatively planned route would actually go through, make adjustments as needed, and see what points of interest we could discover along the way.
This is Part 3 of the series. We veer from our originally planned route and discover an incredible oasis lost in the high desert, teeming with life. But paradise comes with a price...and predators.
If you haven't already, be sure to watch the episodes leading up to this one:
Part 1: A Perhaps Unwise Descent
• Owyhee 2021 Ep.1: Can ...
Part 2: Cliffside Canyon Camping
• Owyhee 2021 Ep.2: Wet ...

The trees along the spring are Russian Olive, and the birds are Starlings, both non-native species introduced to North America.

When I was a wee lad, my family camped in the Steens (Fish Lake) several years in a row. Some local Basque sheep herders would come by and take my older brother and I, horseback, for a few hours to their camp to play with their kids. Vaguely remember it but my Dad would tell stories about it. Wonderful people then, different times. I plan to go back soon to explore. Thanks for sharing your trip with Jason. Memorable.

Fifty plus years ago I lived in Portland for three years after graduation with no idea what the eastern part of the state looked like. I had heard of wagon tracks from the Oregon Trail, but that was all. What you reveal is absolutely fascinating. Marvelous landscapes, intriguing history. Your photography is excellent, your commentary as well. Many thanks to you and your compatriots for bringing all of this to us. A first rate presentation.

The birds are European Starlings (I think!), you can tell by the way they fly as a group, its called a murmuration and can be quite spectacular when there are enough of them! They are non-native to US, being introduced by some guys who where Shakespeare fans in New York.....they apparently wanted all birds mentions in his plays to be present in the US. Ironically they are now considered a pest species in the US but are in decline in their native Europe. Great video!

I hear red wing blackbirds. They have a splash of red on the front of their wings at the elbow. These birds live around the water and nest in the cattails. They’re music to my ears and remind me of home.

When you're way out there, technically off grid, do you ever worry about your truck breaking down and what you will do to recover/get out? I guess ultimately my question is also- are you pretty mechanically inclined? I wonder how common it is for people's rigs to fail and if it ruins the trip or not, if they get stranded for lengths of time. Is it irresponsible to bring children on these trips? I could never travel solo without the wife and kids crucifying me lol
