OWON XDM3051 First Impression

Ойын-сауық

In this video I take a quick look at my new OWON XDM3051 bench multimeter. I was looking for a 5 1/2 digit multimeter and wanted to see if the OWON was any good. Note that this is not a paid promotion and I have no affiliation with OWON. I purchsed this meter with my own money.

Thank you for showing us this OWON multimeter in action. I would be very interesting in seeing how you go about reducing fan noise - a common problem for us all. Regards, David.

Hey man. I usually match the size with a noctua fan and a buck converter if need be. Noctua really are very quiet.

I have the XDM2041 (4.5 digit version) of this meter. It's not the fastest out there but it is quite decent. I had an issue where the frequency measurement in dual-mode would stop after 15-20 seconds or so when on medium or fast mode. Wrote OWON an e-mail and to my surprise they responded quite quickly and sent me a firmware update for the unit. It indeed fixed the issue so I have to give them thumbs-up for this.

What's the latest firmware version? Strangely, there aren't any firmware updates available for download on their website.

My XDM3051 has issues when measuring VAC and frequency simultaneously in dual mode. Measurements were not reliable and even became erratic, even at low speed. I seems the internal processing power was insufficient for dual mode. In single mode everything was fine. I wrote them an email, too, stating serial number , firmware version etc. . Received no answer. I am not happy with the purchase as dual VAC und F measurements are by far so most important measurements for me. Also, in dual mode it is not possible to store both measurements to USB stick. Only the primary value can be stored which seems such an unnecessary limitation. Their website does not offer firmware for download. At least not for the XDM3051 the last time I checked. So it seems you were very lucky.

I have to correct myself. It was an XDM3041, not XDM3051.

Nice look over of the Owon. I am still using an HP 3478A and it's right on. Good videos from you always.

Absolutely. I have a number of these and while they do not have the features or precision of much more expensive units they are certainly ideal (in my opinion) as a high end hobby unit. Please note that I do not have any affiliation with OWON.

@@user-hh4ly2xy6s I rarely buy used multimeters as they are generally being sold for a reason but if you are certain it is in good condition or may need repair then it is personal preference. The HP is most likely to be a better overall meter if it works.

It is not actually as loud as it sounds in the video. The camera mic auto gain turns up the level when there are no other sounds so it always makes it sound like background noises are louder than they really are but the fan in the SMU is relatively noisy.

@@rogerknapman1260 Yes I totally agree. The fan on both my supplies is are not as loud as the multimeter unless I load up the supplies. I have not yet looked inside the meter so I am interested to see why the fan is needed considering how little power it uses.
