@@jgvtc559 Its not a PC, if you mean that in the traditional sense. Its running a ARM microcontroller with a video controller card. In a way, it is almost identical to a Raspberry Pi, without all the extra GPIO pins. 5 yrs ago, they were running a 32-bit ARM Cortex-A8 CPU, which is plenty powerful enough for any 2D rendering. Hopefully now days they are running the newer 64-bit Cortex mcu. Pandora's Box and Raspberry Pi are the most common replacements. Basically, anything that can run an Arcade ROM emulator, like Retro Pie. The very old Raspberry Pi 3B+ can be had for under $30 and houses the ARM Cortex-A53 64--bit, Quad-Core mcu. This would seemingly be an upgrade from what A1Up uses, but again, its probably overkill for what these games demand. As far as I know, very little is being done to reproduce the smooth, lag-free CRT look. There are products that claim to do this, but I dont think they are cheap.

For me, the only way I can own a small scale version of an arcade is to go the Arcade1up route. Price and space is a huge factor for me. I live in a condo. I was able to cram 10 Arcade1up cabs in my place and make an arcade room! I absolutely love these Arcade1up cabs! I was able to carry them inside and put them together by myself! They are all on refrigerator dolly’s so I can move them around. Golden Axe, NBA Jam, TMNT, Star Wars Atari, Star Wars Pinball, Outrun, Pac-Man, Ms. Pacman, Final Fight, Marvel vs Capcom. There’s just no way that I would have been able to live out my childhood dreams without Arcade1up! Im able to invite friends over and relive those times when we used to hit up the arcades after school. Endless fun for me!

I own thirteen original arcade machines and two 1Up Arcade machines. When the 1Up machines were $399, it was a good deal. However, still not as fun as the original with the lighter cabinets, cheaper controllers, and whacky sounds at times but not bad for that price range. However, once it got to $699, I started to look for the original cabinet instead. I recently added a Street Fighter Championship series with dual 19" wells-Gardner monitors for $599. The cabinet needed some work to it but the monitor was perfect. It feels sturdy and the arcade monitor just gave it that 80's feeling.

I just love the amusement experience arcade cockpit racers and other deluxe cabinets have. I feel these experiences can't be emulated in home ports and are generally exclusive to the arcade experience. There are also the many games that have unique control schemes and panels that make them special in their arcade form. I generally try to add these types of games to my own collection. The biggest con to arcade collecting apart from their weight and prices is the constant repair cycles you'll experience. You will need to learn how to fix them yourself and finding parts can sometimes leave a machine down for months. Yet, they are so worth it if you have the space.

After playing MAME for years on my PC and Laptop I'm finally ready to build a cabinet. I'm leaning towards a 32" wide model, maybe a Japanese sit down style and also a racing/flight cabinet as well. With those, my electronic dart board, a wall mounted PC jukebox project, a round wood table w/chairs in a corner for cards complete with a picture of dogs playing poker and a portable pool table project that swings up and wheels out of the way it should be a heck of a game room. As for kids and arcades, in the early 80's my hockey team celebrated at Shakey's Pizza and we were in the small arcade room in the back. One of my team mates was wearing new cowboy boots and discovered that if he kicked the coin door as hard as he could about 10 times he'd get a free play. He must have kicked that thing a few hundred times in total. Wise not to leave kids unsupervised with anything you care about because they're stupid little assholes.

I wasn't really interested in these around the first generation when the cabinets were generic, but since A1U has started making closer to realistic cabinet shapes and art, I've been all in. I'm going to sell my real coin-op cabs and replace them with these in my arcade.

That old arcade hardware (board level) was absolute trash, designed for a 3-5 year life-span tops. I spent more time fixing the crap than playing it. The 1UPs are big enough but also small/lightweight to put a bunch in a small space. Essential mods like lighted coin doors & better controls rly aren’t expensive & very easy to do. Combine all that w/ keeping an eye out for sales, A1UP can rly get you what you want. Note: I would of course prefer the real thing if i had a mansion & unlimited time/money for repairs 😅

Definitely how much space you have usually determines which path you go…I prefer a modded A1Up so you can really customize to your liking (art and all), while still getting the benefits of saving space, leaving room for more cabs if you want. But yeah if I had the space, I would have a double racing setup for 2P as the mandatory :)

I´m fine with either option. But what I ended up doing was building my own full sized cabinet and using spare computer parts for the internals. Surprisingly because I used reciycled parts it ended up costing me roughly the same as a new 1Up cabinet. I can personalize the design to my liking, it´s easy to modify and I think it´s better to reuse those parts rather than having them end up in a e-waste pile somewhere. What I´ve seen other people do is to import one of those japanese style cabinets (Like a Sega Astro city.) and running mame there, that´s another good option.

Arcade1Ups were okay value at best I think (especially with the controls making them feel more like toys). But the prices of the new ones now are getting pretty silly, without any noticeable improvement to the hardware, so I definitely don't think they are worth it anymore. Having said that, they have multiple games on each unit, and it would cost you a heck of a lot more to buy a real cab of each of those games individually than it would to buy an Arcade1Up, not to mention take up a lot more space. But if you only want the games there are cheaper ways you can legitimately own them, too.

Great video analogy methinks ..... and the sweet spot in the middle of these two options is for me, granted it was a lot of work, especially on the software and customisation side but once done I could then port over my different build configs to a new cab and it is : Build your own cabs from different sized flat pack kits and then base them on a compact PC self build or Android (922x). There are so many games to choose from that you will never need to replace any of those cabs out of bordom and if u were the one that built and configured all the software inside then u will always be able to repair and fix them yourself .............. requires a lot of time, effort & learning to do this though and initially that is daunting but moving forward later on you can clone those builds into other cabs ........... shweeeet

I own both, real arcade cabs and some 1Ups. You are pretty much spot on. I could maybe debate a very minor point or two with you but it would be minor at best. I would recommend your video to anyone interested in either the real deal arcades or 1UPs. I have no doubt there are some that would have disagreements with you and I know, in particular, their are a good number that cannot even think of giving 1Ups a thought, let alone say anything positive of them. I would have to write a lot more to cover that but to each their own. The points you make here summarize both pro and con to each fairly well. A little research into either by those persons interested would prove it. Happy gaming!

Emulation has come a long way to the point the roms are playing the same as the real board and either people love or hate emulation, this is the future to keep some of these games alive for many more years. I get it, Arcade 1up is aching in on a nostalgia feeling, a cabinet playing classics with official art on the sides. I also get that they’re “undercutting costs” as in less expensive materials and hardware then the authentic cabinets, as well as the costs of buying and maintaining authentic. I do feel they could drop the price done again. Starting at $400 for only three versions of Street Fighter II is a bit much. They could easily sells these for less again I feel. I would really like to build my own with an emulation device as it’s hardware. For what a Arcade1up costs, think of the potential of emulating your own favourites I’m sure someone hates I said Emulation, but I’m a huge fan. It’s unrealistic to peruse a rare game for unbelievable price points when, yeah emulation isn’t the real thing, but at least it’ll be playable

Granted, I am limited on space so having a few 1ups might just provide enough room to get a few full size cabinets. Out of all my 1 ups, I would possibly sell 2 of them ( would never sell my 1up K I mod :) ) to make room for a fullsize. Cool video bro. Personally, I like to build them, because if i have one break on me, then i get to rebuild and repair, knowing all the parts and process' used to build them. I think I would be too angsty owning genuine arcade cabinets, the not knowing if i could fully repair them to original condition would be too stressful.

You build the cabinets and all? I wish I had wood working skills lol. I fully understand why you'd prefer that. I do have the thought of "Do I really want to put more hours on this aging hardware?" With my Arcade1Ups, I'll just turn them all on and maybe never play 2 of the 5 cabs in that room all day lol. I don't care much since I can replace all of the parts myself. With those full sized machines, I have them all on one power strip. I hesitate to turn them all on just to play one game. At the same time, I think: these were meant to be played. Not to be stored forever. I do believe it all should last a while once I get the monitors fixed up. They won't see anywhere near the use they did in arcades so I imagine they'll last a while longer without issues.

I kind of look at case by case another that's expensive is Dragon's Lair.. arcade prices on it is really rough.. so I thank Arcade1up for at least giving us a little of the feel, but there are a lot of arcade games that are not too expensive and I shop for both when I look... you can run across that game you remember but it's not a Tron or Dragon's Lair, or in your case a KI and you can get a pretty good deal... great coverage I think you are spot on.

I have done my research on buying both ways and I like the Arcade1ups better than the real ones. I try to buy as many as I can from companies who offer the longest warranties. Usually that’s Walmart. We’ve bought about 20 Arcade1up cabs and so far have only had issues with one. The Outrun. It had a pedal issue. Got that fixed by buying a new pedal from Arcade1up for $32 ($18 plus shipping and tax) Otherwise all have been good. I know buying warranties is probably stupid but we like the piece of mind that comes with them. I also like the Arcade1up because I can buy like 2 or 3 if for the cost of what one real one would be. So I can grow my Arcade1up collection faster and have more variety over buying the real ones. And lastly I’m not tech savvy at all so I would be scared buying a real one and having it break down. And lastly the weight of the real ones would suck. I’ll stick to buying Arcade1ups and searching for deals on them to save even more money. For example I just picked up Frogger for $349 on sale at Lowe’s!

If you look around enough you'll find many real arcades cheaper than A1U. The argument then becomes "Yeah but they need expensive and difficult work" which isn't always true. I just picked up a real Killer Instinct for nearly what they're going to charge for the "Pro series" Arcade1Up cabs. I got lucky and do need to buy a few replacement parts for cosmetic fixes, otherwise it worked perfectly. My Hydro Thunder needed a $60 part and about 2 hours of unscrewing things and putting it back together. Thats probably more work than most are willing to do though. On the other hand, there's no chance Hydro Thunder is going to be released in Arcade1Up form since you can't even emulate the game.

I noticed with RidgeRacer when my wife was playing the game was shaking all over the place. I asked her to take it easy since these are not the real arcade controls. Since then, she has eased up. I do like RidgeRacer adding an extra board between the display and control deck. This made the game more immersive of a experience. Granted, RidgeRacer being a driving game, so the control deck itself is angled and that’s why they did it. However on the Tron cabinet they inset the display deeper and put a changing LED strip between monitor and control deck. That definitely gives a much more immersive experience with both the led strip and the black light on the S Panel reflecting off the sides.

Thanks for making this video. I should start by saying I do own several real arcade machines so I know this colors my perspective a little. When Arcade-1up first started coming out with titles I was very excited and watched each new one come out. The thing that stopped me in most cases with A1up is that we will end up modding the heck out of them and I'm totally fine with that, but then what are we really buying? If I replace the screen with a 20" screen, the controls with nice happ controls and PCB with pc or pie, then all I'm actually buying is the empty-cabinet which is pretty fragile and not very well made. Aside from Star Wars where you get an incredible controller, in most cases, you're paying $500-700 for a small empty cabinet (granted with artwork but you can even replace that.). It seems like there are better options out there to buy an empty better made cabinet for that price range. If I'm missing something you get with A1up you definitely would not replace, please leave a comment I'm interested to hear A1up owners thoughts.

That way you can get the benefits of new technology, a full size experience without the weight of an original cabinet (if you build a bartop with a podium you allmost get a real full size experience, and can still move it ourself), and a high quality build with good controls for not much more than the price of an Arcade1Up.

    Жыл бұрын

MAME can come close to the real hardware but it's always slightly different. Most people won't notice much or complain. I'm a huge fan of Killer Instinct so I see where MAME is different fairly easily. When you sit the real machines next to MAME, you'll notice theres almost always a speed difference. I've only really done this with Killer Instinct. One of the biggest differences is how fast the game runs. When the real hardware and MAME are started at the same points and observed, you'll find the MAME version pulls ahead of the real hardware. You can see an example here in my Killer Instinct Arcade1Up review: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZmppsLWGZc6aftI.html I have observed speed differences in Rush the Rock on MAME vs the real hardware as well. My theory is, they can emulate the hardware but can't emulate or simulate "chug". What I mean by chug is the points where the original hardware gets bogged down by too much activity on screen at once or the CPU being worked too hard at one point. It's also possible the data transfer speeds of old hardware affected the original hardware where as emulation is running on modern hard drives or SSDs that can transfer the data far faster.

KI is going next to T2 where I formerly had a Costco MK from ebay that I tried to turn into a Moonwalker and I botched the side graphics. Side graphics are a real pain to apply, you have to do a bit at a time and hope you have it lined up properly. I took apart the former MK to make room for KI pro. I've played the games a million times and already own them on Dreamcast and Xbox that I have hooked up to really nice CRTs. The only actual arcade cabinet that I might consider getting is a real MVC but I don't really have the room. I love SNK but I have my neo Geo and many games. I love the idea of a racing cab but I already have a pretty good sim rig and again with the space.

What do you think about the modded ones that have 100000+ games, almost all the consoles, and it has costume body with the design you want and the controllers you want

This is a debate me and my friend had for decades. He owns a collection of real arcade machines, I mean all the four players arcade machines, and dozens of other fighting game cabinets, including Japanese cabinets. Me, I only own one xbox cabinet, it feels like a real cabinet, but it's obviously a fake one, but the maintenance cost and space is a godsend and I can play any game I want on one cabinet, it may not be the real deal, but close enough for all intents and purposes. On the other hand my friend has dozens of cabinets, some don't work, most are collecting dust, making his house like a hoarder house, no thank you. For me real arcades are not meant to be collected, their purpose and design is meant for arcades, where random people can join in if they wanted to, that was part of the experience for me, they're meant for short bursts of fun, eating your quarters away, not to be taken seriously and played for hours with a few of your selected friends, I feel that's what consoles were meant for.

No replacement for the real thing, but see the merit for 1up. I can see you've been bitten by the arcade bug though. Just waiting for the video when you got your 10th cabinet lol I definitely think of these like classic cars as well, especially when you start getting into pinball. Working on them can be just as fun at times as playing them!

I think the pcb boards are always sold out as people already took advantage or Arcade1up realized people can buy these boards rather than buying their arcades to make their own. I had a street fighter 2 arcade (gen1) which I got screwed and was broken out of the box. Arcade1up did say they normally wouldn’t warranty it but they did send me a new pcb, which is expected tomorrow. I did ask if I could get a modern pcb from the newer street fighter arcades but unfortunately they just said it doesn’t work with older gen 1 units.

I may disagree there. I don't think Arcade1Up's circuit boards are as well made. I've already heard of many people's PCBs dying, they typically get replaced under warranty but its concerning. If you have ever seen the amount of time (typically measured in hours or minutes) the real arcade hardware logs, its mind boggling how they're still working. For example, my Hydro Thunder cabinet, which is just a PC showed a ridiculous amount of time logged, the time spent in a race (meaning being played) was 254 days, 11 hours and 35 minutes! The game had also earned over $48,000 in it's time in use. I don't believe Arcade1Up hardware could last that long. I'm even less likely to believe the cabinet could hold up to that amount of play. Thats not a knock on A1U though, they just weren't built for that kind of use. I didn't even know what Extreme Home Arcade Megacade was, I looked it up and they look well made. Thanks for watching!

@@KillerArcadeGames Well we can't say for sure how long the Arcade1ups will hold up since they have been in business for only 3 or 4 years I believe. that said, I have an original Street Fighter Cabinet from 2018 that is still holding up just fine and it is played regularly. These things are cell phone based, so they should hold up for a long time. And if something should break, it will be easily and cheaply replaceable compared to an original cabinet.

I never seen or played any arcade cabinets ever. I mean, i didn't saw them in person, like for real and not on someone's video. I found out about arcade games only when i got my first PC and found out about emulation. Until then, i knew only about consoles and PC games. And by console games i mean old 8 - 16 bit games, but only on two consoles like NES or Mega Drive and that's it. And i never even knew that, most of the arcade games was originally that, an arcade games. That they were not on consoles at first, or on PC. But when i found out about it back in, like, 2013 or so, i was little bit shocked. But yeah, i never played any game on real arcade cabinets, and for me, it is impossible to get, at least arcade1up cabinet because, in my country it will coast so much that you can brobably buy a freaking half of the country for those kind of money lol So yeah, playing arcade games for me is best with emulation. About kids: I don't have kids. Hell, i don't even have a girlfriend lol And in my opinion, these days it is better to live alone than just starting a relationships with someone, and then regret it. Also, having kids and family these days is way more expensive than buying real or arcade1up arcade cabinet. So yeah, i decided to screw it and stay alone. It is better to be alone or face the reality and waste your nerves and life to someone, who is probably with just for money and not because they like you the way you are. Also, back in the school and student days girls simply said NO to me all the time, no matter where i go and no matter how good i'am. And at first i was pissed of because of that. But now, looking on reality of things, i came to understanding that been single is not a bad idea. Other words: i rather give my trigger a workout by myself than stick him in to someone and pay the price that i didn't deserve, if you know what i mean.
