Ownboard Bamboo AT review - FANTASTIC if... and but...

There's one thing in particular that bugs me about the Ownboard Bamboo AT, aka the Ownboard Bamboo GT when paired with Cloudwheels. Otherwise, it's an awesome electric skateboard and one of my favorites at the moment. Scroll down for timestamps.

    Got Carbon GT today with cloud wheels. I tightened the bushings to nearly max. I'm 205lbs. Board is still maneuverable but not wobbly at all. Coming from Meepo V3, initial punch of speed is about the same with full 🔋. Meelo usually loses power due to battery sag, but carbon gt keeps going strong and does not lose speed much in hills. It carves better than meepo even after tightening bushings a lot. I'm so glad I got the carbon for $100 more. Looks amazing and the board is one piece.

    Those cloud wheels remind me of the rough stuff wheels from slick revolution. I found those super unstable in any kind of damp conditions, where you could fishtail easily. Seems dry where you are, maybe this is only a UK problem ;-) In any case great detailed review as usual!

    It's the diameter of the wheel that makes the difference in top speeds and range. The longer the level arm, the more tangential force needs to be applied for rotation.

  • @ryan.2327
    @ryan.23274 жыл бұрын

    Bigger wheels will give higher top speed and less torque if compared to smaller wheels with same gear ratio. Higher the gear ratio the more torque and less top speed if kept with same size wheels. Hope this helps anyone wondering.

  • @gregholland11
    @gregholland114 жыл бұрын

    I think the top speed is increased on the smaller wheels because the big wheels have lots of squishy drag? If the larger AT wheels have more drag and friction (you can tell if they have worse freeroll characteristics), that added friction will reduce your top speed. I notice this on my ranger x2

    So I swapped the AT wheels out for the Cloud wheels on my Carbon AT. In the process, I measured gear ratios & wheel sizes, and the Cloud wheels should have an 8% increase in speed over the AT wheels, but should have lost torque in the process. Why it feels like it accelerates faster to you, Daniel, I don't know. Larger wheels have a greater moment of inertia than smaller wheels (more mass further away from the axis of rotation), so for a given torque they will accelerate slower. Whether that effect is great enough to feel or not, I do not know. I haven't been able to get out to try the wheels for myself yet.

    I sold my Backfire Ranger X1 because the ride felt a little too lumbering. The OW Bamboo with Cloud wheels really sounds like it hits the sweet spot! The one thing holding me back from buying another Ownboard is that I insist on having a display or app with ride info. That barebones remote might be acceptable for a ~$400 board but, as price scales up, so do expectations.

    I picked up a bamboo AT to compare with my evolve bamboo GTR. So far I'm having technical issues with both! LOL As for the ownboard, I've had two bearings fall apart after a few days of riding. They're still pretty greasy so I don't know what the issue was. I did ride in the rain a lot with it. Anyways, I'd go grab a new set of bearings and change them but I can't get them out of the one piece metal tire hub... broken or otherwise. Same for the drive gear bearing. Any advice?

    Looks like a good board - cloud wheels for commuting, AT wheels for weekend fun on dirt and gravel woodland trails, where you wouldn't want to hit the top speed anyway. The only issue is the price with import duty and VAT it's not that far from Evolve, and you still have to deal with Chinese support, so any broken part will take weeks to replace. Unless it goes on sale soon, there's no reason to buy it if you live in Europe.

    Especially in Australia. I was looking at the Ownboard Carbon AT against the Evolve GTR Carbon; there was a sale that brought it's price down to about 1500 AUD vs the $2000 AUD of the GTR. I went with the GTR mainly because of customer support and accessibility to parts. Without the sale I believe the Ownboard is actually the same price as the GTR, before shipping or tax.

    Without removing the motor pulley cover, the biggest size you can use is something like 99mm, and at that size you’re already at risk of getting wheel bite. Cloudwheels are 120mm so you’d need to remove those covers and add risers, but you’d need to cut the rear riser because of the cables that plug into the deck. I never tried this and don’t intend to. I prefer smaller wheels for this board.

    I've heard a lot of bad reviews about Ownboard.* People complain about motor problems, etc. According to a lot of Ownboard owners, the customer service staff also take ages to respond to reports and then they charge you again for faulty components even if you are in warranty. Customers also say that the replacement parts take ages to arrive too. I hope Ownboard's customer service isn't as bad as people are saying because I'm interested in buying a board from them, but now I'm having reservations. *See Ownboard's official Facebook page and Trustpilot for reviews.

    I just received my bamboo at a week ago and the belt drive motors make a soft humming/vibrating noise whenever the board is turned on and not moving. Is this normal or is there something wrong with my board?

    I was asking the same question. I ultimately opted for the Bamboo Cloud GT + Evolve 7" Street wheels kit which are on sale for $150 at this time. Apparently the Evolve wheels are compatible with the Bamboo but I won't really know until both arrive. With the Coronavirus scare going on, I have no idea how long it will take to get the Bamboo. The new remote from Ownboard with display was what made me overcome my hesitance over buying another Ownboard board.

    Daniel Kwan Thanks for the reply! Portability shouldn’t be a problem however I am stuck on weather I would prefer double kingpin over a single/reverse kingpin. I want to ride fast without wobbles so I’m leaning towards backfire however my streets aren’t well maintained enough for a street board like the g3 plus :/ . Which would you personally prefer?

  • @DanielKwan

    @DanielKwan

    Dylan Ferris If you want to go fast without wobbles I would recommend not using double kingpin. If you like G3P but roads aren’t that great you might want to wait a few weeks for the Backfire Zealot and get bigger 3rd party wheels.
