Lyrics:
I said
Hey, I’m looking for Casey Connor
Here’s my resume
I’m looking for a part-time job
And I can start today
Well, I heard you needed some help in frozen
With Eric leaving soon
My boss shook my hand and I began
That Monday after school
That Monday after school
So thank you kindly
I owe ya, Hy-Vee
Eating cold pizza in the break room
Feeling kinda small
A skinny kid with a crooked tie
My name tag said it all
It said
"Adam, Frozen, 1 Years Of Service”
But I felt like the man
And I made it rain when payday came
Cuz that was all I had
So thank you kindly
I owe ya, Hy-Vee
Yeah I owe ya
Yeah I owe ya, Hy-Vee
Adam, check please
Ooh, na da da da da da da
Yeah I’ll be filling up the Cool Whip
Adam, check please
If the lines are getting long
You know that you can call me
Adam, check
Adam, check please
Over the intercom
And I’ll be there in a jiffy
Adam, check please
Ooh, na da da da da da da
Yeah I’ll be filling up the Cool Whip
Adam, check please
Na da da da da da da
Everything is beautiful
Adam, check
Adam, check please
Yeah I promise I’m on the way
Everything is beautiful
And I’ll be there in a jiffy
Because
Stocking shelves was how I learned
To do my level best and take pride in my work
Cuz you never know when it’s your turn
To climb the ladder of success
Show the world what you do best
Yeah you were made for this
Hey, I’m looking for Casey Connor
It seems like yesterday
I paid my dues in frozen foods
And I just wanna say
God bless the helpful smile in every aisle
I couldn’t ask for more
And I’m glad I got my first real job
Working in this grocery store
In this grocery store
In this grocery store
So thank you kindly
Yeah, you mean the world to me
I owe ya, Hy-Vee
Yeah I owe ya
Don’t stop until you reach the stars
Climb the ladder of success
Show the world what you do best
Yeah you were made for this
So chase your passion and not your paycheck
Be proud of what you have
And put in the work until your signature
Becomes an autograph
Adam, check please
Ooh, na da da da da da da
Yeah I’ll be filling up the Cool Whip
Adam, check please
I’m on my way
I’m filling up the Cool Whip
Adam, check
Adam, check please
Yeah I promise I’m on the way now
That friendly smile
In every aisle guaranteed
That your day was breezy
All those hours
And store-bought flowers set me free
And freedom meant the world to me
That friendly smile
In every aisle guaranteed
That your day was breezy
All those hours
And store-bought flowers set me free
And freedom meant the world to me
Help is on the way

❤️ Adam said in the commentary ❤️: “It’s about the first job that I’ve ever had, I was 16 years old and a friend of mine, worked at a local grocery store in my hometown and he was kind of my in for me for working there. I remember I put in my application, I did the interview and I was hired part time after school, five days a week, working in soon be my department in the store, frozen food.” “Whenever there was a wave of customer that came through the store and things got kind of backed up a shift manager would call me over the intercom and that was my cue to drop whatever it was I was doing, run up to the front, uh cash registers and open a new checkout lane to keep the crowd moving through. When they would call me over the intercom, somebody would always say, "Adam, check please.” “My first day on the job, they gave me the name tag, a little clip-on name tag that said my name at the top Adam Y., under that it said the department I belonged to, "Frozen.” And under that it said “Years of Service” with a space. There was a little space in front of it where removeable number would go. The idea was to change the number as the years went up. But somehow my name tag never got the update so I was there for two years and the two years I worked at this grocery store it said, “Adam, Frozen, one year(s) of service.” And I still have the name tag." “And that’s the song. I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to get my first job at the grocery store that I worked at. I’m really grateful for the money that I earned and values that I learned along the way, particularly how to work hard and how to take pride in doing a good job, didn’t matter what I was doing, I learned to take pride in what I was doing and that chapter of my life was really important to me, it was a really important part of my story and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

OMG the imagery from the lyrics are so wonderful and surprising. My first job as a teenager was in a grocery store at the chain in Florida that starts with "P". I was the drink/dairy aisle guy. I miss it sometimes. Adam is describing the experience perfectly. It was hard work but I can remember us blasting this on the intercom at 12am at night while waxing the floors. And getting the wax all over your shoes, crap!. But you didn't have to worry about taking the work home. Every day was a reset. I am now an IT professional but would have never gotten there without this experience.

this style will always feel so nostalgic to me, i don't think it's the lyrics, but the music behind it and the tone of Adam's voice. I started listening to his stuff in 4th grade when my older cousin introduced me to the music and i couldn't get enough of it. I remember dancing around their room and singing various songs as loud as i could. I stopped listening as consistently as i got older and Adam wasn't as active. But in highschool i remember a day where i relistened to a bunch and just felt like i was a kid again. Owl city is for sure my comfort music artist.

This is--and I say this with all due affection--such an Elder Millennial song lol. I am exactly the same age as Adam and I can just feel in my soul the flip phones, watching training videos on VHS tapes, the scratchy uniforms we had to wear, stuffy Boomer bosses in their 40s, frosted tips, "non-skip" CD players with pop punk or nu-metal in them, and the cautious optimism about our futures that we still had.

This was me working my first job at my college campus bookstore. Only Adam could write a song so deeply personal and yet it still resonates with so many people, becoming an anthem for anyone working humble little first time jobs or have memories of doing so. Thank you, genius owl man. Also I must say, job hunting while listening to this song is a mood

First job i ever had was dishwasher at Skyline Chili at 18. They were not hiring but I i needed a job badly. My boyfriend worked there so I would come with him to work and sweep the floor. Then I started helping the waitresses clean off the table. Then that led the owner to asking me to cover shifts whenever people called off. After two weeks of that he said to me " You've worked so many hours I have to put you on payroll now!" I was SO STOKED. He saw my hard work and gave me a chance. I'll always be grateful to him for giving my first "yes" in the world! ❤
