OWENSVILLE CRAWLERS - TECH: TO VENT TIRES OR NOT TO VENT WHEELS/TIRES?
First off, no disrespect to any of our crawler friends. This video is in our opinion, as always. Today we talk a little tech about venting wheels/tires. We don't. And it works great.

A useful video, thank you! I've just spend £60 on new tyres for my FTX Mauler (Proline Hyrax). I'm not keen to make holes in them, to vent them, even although I'm running them with open cell foams on alloy beadlocks. While venting may give me a bit more performance, overall, I think I'd be happier with them non vented, and longer lasting! Living in Scotland, wet weather is a common thing (even in summer), so soggy wet damp foams doesn't sound much fun. I can't see myself ever needing to vent a tyre due to increase in elevation, unless I'm RC crawling at the top of a mountain! So overall I think I'll keep them sealed and non vented, despite with other "expert" RC enthusiasts think.

Having just put Pro-line two stage foams in my new TRX4 tires, I was planning on venting my new tires tomorrow. I'm glad that I saw this tonight. Honestly, I didn't want to vent them for the obvious reasons. However, as a new crawler, I thought it was the thing to do. Given the information and reasons you shared, I think I'll start out non-vented and give it a go that way first. Thanks!

Im in the same boat just 2 years later. Proline says not to vent crawler tires and after seeing this vid and your comment, sealed it is :)

Squishing when you squeeze it hard with your hand vs with the scaled down weight of the maybe 6-9 lb crawler split between 4 tires are 2 different things

Nice vid I see your point....but I have ran boath ways with the vented and non vented.I do alot a rock crawling with my scx10 and the one thing that I noticed was a vented tire would go up a steeper Grade (Rock Face) as opposed the non vented would struggle to grab the steep rock face.So like you said to each his own... :) BTW your SXC10 II Really nice!!!

thank you! its a blast to drive. it climbs between 60-70 degrees non vented. the foams that came stock in those tires are super soft. and because the tires are very soft as well they squish juuuuuust right. :)

i know this vid is over 3 years old but i'm sort of new to the crawling scene. have an actual mini metal beadlock set of wheels that has a set of 24 bolts (12 each side of the wheel) each and i'm definitely not venting and cleaning inside the wheels every time lol i was thinking of using just the stiff inner foam of the two-stage foam or just a smaller stiff foam and then air for the rest if the soft outer foam isn't soft enough to let the tire conform.

How do y’all seal the vented holes on the wheels?

Thanks for making and sharing this video. I'm new to the RC crawler thing and recently got a TRX-4. I love it, but wanted bead-locks. Got some 1.9" Denalis from Pro-Line and Hyrax tires. I'd be interested in feedback on my selection, but please be gentle as I cant go back now hehe. I'm trying to decide if I am just going to seal them up or vent. This video is helpful, but I am wondering, when you seal up the bead-lock, should you squeeze out some air to let the tires run a little flat?

All good questions. Hyrax tires are great. Not to sure on your wheel choice as I usually run different wheels. As far as vented or non-vented, id say non-vented. keep all the water, dirt, etc. out. Foams will get longer life and the tires will be easier to deal with if you want to change them later. I WOULD NOT squeeze any air. When you seal the bead, you DO NOT want to be applying any pressure to the tire itself. you want it to be its full shape basically naturally inflated by the air and foam. trust me, the tires WILL run flat enough. especially with a heavier rig. *NOTE!:* When you change altitude significantly from where you live, you may see a bit of over-inflation, or deflation, in which case, the bead needs to be released some so the pressure can equalize inside the tire. I have never had to do this, but it will happen. especially rising from sea level to a high altitude, or vis-a-versa.

Vent it, it's just foams. If the foams become "broken down" buy some different ones, good excuse to experiment with new or different densities. I live in a cold, high elevation location, pressures always changing and there's nothing worse than having to stop an epic wheeling session to inflate your tires due to dimpling. Slightly "broken in" foams with vented sticky ties working well in Sierra Nevada mtn range (coarse granite)

I have ran both sealed and vented and found with sealed tires if you run in cold weather they will look flat. The down side of vented tires is where I live in the Pacific Northwest your foams are going to get wet because it rains 9 months out of the year.

None of us have had the cold weather do any changes to the tires, and I live in the High Sierras in California. We drive in a lot of snow and ice. But thank you for your input. Good to share experiences. :)

I think also if you seal your tires in the cold that would be the smallest the get in the cold , seal in cold air ... may look puffy when it gets warm I’m not sure. I’m in the process of experimenting myself but I have heard you can acclimatize the air in your tires

I personally prefer sealed tires I feel like the foams disintegrate when left wet but I live in a colder climate and I have problems with the tires getting flat can anyone help

the cold weather just changes the air density. try a 2 stage foam inside them so its less of an issue. open cell single stage foams dont hold well in as cold weather.

I'm just getting started in RC, and I'm expecting my first ever shipment of RC bodies on 3/15. I've watched as many videos as one could possibly watch....I personally don't plan on venting any of my tires. It looks ridiculous when the tires are all crumpled up as the crawlers are climbing. They do lower air pressure in the tires in real life, but the tire is still sealed...it boils down to personal preference and respecting their choices as they should respect ours....regardless, just go out and enjoy the hobby.

It looks ridiculous but is needed to get grip because the rc doesnt weigh much and its necessary if u run a single stage foam
