I do Percieve is the best Owen album IMO, or No Good for No One Now, although the more I listen to The King of Whys the more I think it's a contender for his best album. Definately the one of his most ecclectic/best produced albums and the songwriting's consistantly good (I love At Home with Owen, but always skip Femme Fatale).

honestly each album is kinda varied enough that they all stand. No Good For No One Now is prime Owen for, yknow, break-up shit. tracks on New Leaves are beautiful glimpses into a nice relationship. Ghost Town has some valuable and poetic insights on being a father, etc. Like, I hate to choose a "best" Owen album, nor do I agree with any kind of gold standard because I don't want there to be a standard with Owen. and i highly disagree that they're overproduced and underdeveloped, to say that would be disrespectful to Mike. face it - writing an I Do Perceive or an At Home With over and over for more than a decade would be boring. Mike's mixed it up a bit, and whether you like the new albums or not is entirely up to your own opinion, not Mike - because whether you realize it or not, it's still Mike and it's still his "soul".

Surprised nobody mentioned L’Ami du Peuple in this thread. I thought that album was super ground breaking sonically.

The only Owen album recorded with a full band in a studio and not just Mike by himself at home.

Listening to this album foe the first time and holy shit Empty Bottles is insane.

Over the years this man is still doing beautiful work. Awesome, awesome. Love it! Looking forward to the new American Football album as well.

"Bring out what's dead...and dying..." during Sleep Is a Myth at 33:45 ...a direct reference to the same line in Everyone Feels Like You from No Good For No One Now? Even if it's just a coincidence I still got chills.

Listen, Duff, you're wrong. It's a clear reference to "Bring Out Yer Dead" in Monty Python's Holy Grail. Only a true Owen fan would recognize this.

No Duff, if you bought the first-pressing of the vinyl (must be the starburst yellow/green) he thanks the Monty Python's crew if you spin the record at 200 rpm.

Wow, very impressed. I knew it would be good but this is up there with his best stuff. Loads of nice textures and vocal harmonies, quality atmospheric production. A bit more on the sadder/sober side than the last ones but that's kinda what you want with Owen.

I never listened to American Football in 2000s. I literally started in 2024 lmao. Well ofcourse I'm sad I didn't dedicate some space on my 512mB iPod Shuffle. But this Owen album and American Football's Silhouettes are just want you would hope it would be 20 years after the 2000s Cambrian Explosion of musical creativity.

Well its the same singer for both bands lol, but you can also try TTNG or Delta Sleep, amazing bands too
