Sometimes the transformations are less literal. People turning into birds is pretty common in the Metamorphoses. You could say Daedalus and Icarus are also transformed into birds, but through the use of human technology rather than divine magic. Or you could say Icarus is transformed into the Icarian Sea, since it takes on his name when he dies.

In context, Ovid was very anti-theology and openly wrote the gods' stories as putting them in a bad light. In another version of most of Hera/Zeus' stories, Hera couldn't reprimand Zeus or take her anger out on him directly, but could take her anger out on his lovers and children, which would still hurt him in some way. Not right, but an explanation.

I hate Juno. She abruptly transformed innocent Kallisto into a wild bear!! She must be punished at the hands of Kallisto.
@FengLengshun
2 жыл бұрын
It's less that Hera/Juno is hypocrite, and more that she both fancied herself as the Queen of Gods, the Goddess of Marriage, and that she couldn't accept that the King of Gods Zeus isn't the person she wished he was. In general, Hera is a good wife, but at the same time Zeus is... the best interpretation I know of him is that he loves his people, the Greek, too much and wishes to put his blood into as many of them, to improve their chances and strength. At worst, he's just a womanizer in general, too free to be tied down. Whatever the case, it's really not the place for a goddess of monogamy, who truly does embody that. It's an abusive relationship born from two people who are just inherently incompatible with one another, and one where both of them take out their issues on other people.
@user-dj9vo6iw5y
2 жыл бұрын
@@FengLengshun don't even try to rationalize their actions. I can't still forgive what they have done to so many weak and innocent women who are unfairly killed or forced to become something that is an animal or monster. zeus and the other gods are all punished for what they have done to Callisto as soon as Jesus Christ arrives and kills them all. Then why didn't she try to go to Hecate make zeus only love her forever. I cannot convince it. This must face justice.
If you're looking for an easy read with Interesting myths & tales there are few classical texts better than Metamorphoses. Also just to clarify Metamorphoses was written in 8AD not the 8th century.

So... Zeus, and in another story, Poseidon, RAPES a woman and the woman gets punished. Medusa, by Athena and Callisto by my goddess Diana AND again by Hera. That just isn't right.

Yeah. Poseidon had a gripe with Athena, so he "stole" Medusa (seeing the beautiful Woman as a Prized Possession of Athena's), and ... yeah ... raped her. Basically, Poseidon saw Medusa as "Property of Athena" and undertook to destroy her, in a disgracefully smug, self-adulating manner. That's putting it nicely. What a guy, eh? Poacher/Rapist. Tragically, this very brand of violent psychopathy is perpetrated today ... in the Real World, by actual humans (technically). It's disgusting, but it actually does happen. Back to the World of Myth, Athena proved pretty petty as well. I think the Gods were invented to demonstrate the extremes of Human behavior ... both Good and Evil. And the Tale of Medusa is about as Evil as it can get. ~TD, Boston

Remember that these are Ovid's retellings of older stories. Ovid had quite the anti authority streak and would often impose his own views on the original story. It's easiest to see his influence when looking at Athena/Minerva. In the Greek versions Athena is usually pretty reasonable and fair. But Ovid's Roman equivalent Minerva is.... well you watched the video.

I honestly can’t get enough of this you talking about mythology. You should make a podcast, if you haven’t already.
I'm really interested in Ovids book of Metamorphoses but still I and probably many of us have to keep in mind that these are the Roman versions of the Greek gods or his interpretation of them. Of course the most of the gods in actually Greek myths/religion and stories that we know of and were saved were not saints or full benevolent either but it seems they are far less brutal than in Ovids work. I hope many people can understand the difference between Ovids work/Roman mythology and the actual tales of Greek mythology.

Medusa turned into a woman with snake hairs and a petrifying gaze by Athena. Atalanta turned into a lion. Philomela turned into a swallow. Procne turned into a nightingale. A band of pirates turned into dolphins by the god Dionysius. Daphne turned into a laurel tree.

The story of Arachne is really interesting to me because out of the two tapestries, the Metamorphoses undeniably has more in common with Arachne's tapestry than Athena's. It makes me doubt whether Ovid believed in the gods, because he seems to be saying "the gods will bring down their wrath on you if you tell stories about them being bad, by the way here are a bunch of stories of them being bad."
