It took 14 years to build Mount Rushmore, and over 400 men were employed. However, remarkably, no one died during the blasting and carving process. However, some of the workers died later of silicosis (a lung condition), which was caused by the dust that the they inhaled while they were carving the granite...great show tonight...great panel. Norm Macdonald replies with "sarcasm, you mean sarcasm. He invented sarcasm." Something like that. So I thought he was a stuck up asshole. Bill, let me rephrase what the woman was trying to get across. Throughout the history of modern Quatar, the death rate among the worker class when constructing these large projects is 5x higher than most other places in the world. There are zero safety regulations, workers are paid substandard wages, their visas are held hostage until they complete the work, treated as sub human compared to Qatari citizens. Quatar also treats women as property, has medieval laws regarding how women can dress, there is no freedom of speech or any of the basic freedoms most humans enjoy.

I spent two weeks in Qatar about 10 years ago. Women, at the time, had many more rights than women in other Middle Eastern countries. They could drive, vote, and run for office. Many attended college, in Qatar and in other countries, and worked out of the home. Most didn't cover their faces and, I was told, many women didn't wear the burqas, but that wasn't apparent because they blended in with the women from other countries who live/work there. As an American woman, visiting Qater on official business, I just wore my regular work clothes. After hours, I didn't wear short shorts or tank tops, but otherwise, again, I wore what I wanted. I'm not saying women had equal rights with men, but women weren't hidden away and subjected to harsh restrictions. Maybe the laws have changed....

@@GoGreen1977 Third country nationals, the ones who do all the physical labor in the heat, are subject to a totally different environment than western people. More than 10 years ago, their passports were seized when they arrived in country and they were forbidden to leave until their work contracts were complete. They have to get loans for their recruiting agencies in their home countries, and they aren't reimbursed or sometimes paid at all by the construction companies. The facade they show to westerners is a world apart from the day laborers, on the Newhour today they talk about how they were fed rotten fish that made them sick for meals, and are still owed their pay months after they have returned to their home countries.

The reports of 15,000, 6,500 or 1,000 deaths of people working on construction sites is so misleading it is frankly fake news. These various figures are based on the total number of migrant deaths in Qatar regardless of cause since Qatar was given the World Cup 10 years ago. There’s zero evidence that they all worked on construction sites for the World Cup or that their death was related to the World Cup in any way.
