Overthinking Eurovision 2022: Serbia, "In Corpore Sano", Konstrakta

Ойын-сауық

We did the banana song so we definitely had to do this one. Bonus observation: Meghan Markle herself has struggled with mental health issues (even suicidal thoughts) and tried to hide them. So not only does Konstrakta have a troubled mind in a healthy body, but her celebrity hair idol does too.

Lyric 'Koja li je tajna zdrave kose Megan Markel', or in English - What's the secret to a healthy hair of Meghan Markel? - has literally nothing to do with Meghan Markel. It paints clickbait tabloid titles about health, and how tabloids are swaying public thinking on what should be desirable, which no one can achieve. This causes serious mental issues in many. The rest of the lyrics in that verse actually follow the analysis by tabloids, and their bullshitting game. Btw those are her own words. Second verse is 'relief bounce', or 'I don't really care' attitude about tabloid titles, it's relaxed, thinks nothing about it, body takes care about itself, and we enjoy life, and then - plot twist I don't have medical insurance! So the anxiety goes up because of that. And anxiety isn't good for the mental health. Which is kinda ironic that something that is meant to help you is causing you anxiety. No need to explain the ending.

As an artist her "heart" beats on her own (she's an individual thinker), but she's not covered with medical insurance which is ironic. She has a healthy mindset yet artists are not considered to be important to society. An artist CAN and HAS to be healthy 🥳

Fun fact: the irony in Konstrakta’s appearance at Eurovision is in the fact that she had no intention of going to Turin, but entered the Serbian national selection merely to promote her Triptih and In Corpore Sano was submitted only because it was the only one that fitted the Eurovision’s regulations about the 3-minute entry. She had no idea it would resonate so much with the public and was genuinely shocked when she won.

I do not think he nailed it. The Latin part is obviously a critique of politics towards Covid-19. Lockdowns, travel bans, scaring people by producing panic around Covid-19, mass testing, not allowing us to live freely and happily. Now it has stopped to some extent due to the war in Ukraine, but if you remember, when this song was written, it was constantly reported how many people were newly ill, how many died, how many were on a respirator ... Look now at what is happening in Shanghai. THIS is what is being talked about, it is criticized that so much emphasis in modern medicine and in science and society is placed on a healthy body, at the cost of a desperate mind, a sick mind, pressure on people, depression. They took away our normal life, happiness and well-being and our sanity for two years. I do not know why he did not mention it, whether because he did not understand or did not dare to say it. However, he did give some interesting views on the song's mesages that I did not grasp before (e.g. gender issues etc.).

Serbian entry: A young woman, in her 40s, mother of two, with an actual University degree (Architecture) gets on the stage, blows everyone's mind, all while fully dressed and just sitting and washing hands. Empress. From the song start till the end, all eyes are on her. And on top of that performance her song carries incredibly strong message about overwhelming "health" information every woman reads in magazines, promoted by celebrities and impact on one's mental health. She replicates compulsive behavior of all humanity: "Be healthy, be healthy, be healthy, be healthy..." and in the song finale twists famous Latin proverb pointing to a conclusion: "When your body becomes healthy, what about your mental health?" All those magazines bring readers in a state of "health" paranoia, while your mind becomes sick, sad, desperate and frightened. Truly a masterpiece. Song has so many layers that you can analyze for hours, from reverse Latin start, to powerful Latin ending, all packed in perfect theatrical delivery. This song is simply beyond Eurovision. It belongs in a museum. This is an excellent song analysis for those who don't immediately see the power of this song: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nZOYz6hvqKu0Ydo.html&ab_channel=OverthinkingIt

"Mekano" has nothing to do with work/life balance. Mekano means "soft", and in the song sense perfect translation would probably be "Limp". Chorus is "curse to "mekano"". The song is a triptih ending. First one: you live your mediocre life knowing about "more", but never experiencing, the second: you spend a lifetime obsessing on health and looks, but you mind is going paranoid, and finally the third song, condemns life spent in a comfort zone. Lyrics in "mekano" talk about discussions she's having at home, i.e about neolibarilism, about everyday work, where the point is that she is just living a life in mediocre comfort zone. "Curse the comfort zone" - that's what chorus of "mekano" translates and is the point of triptih.

And then Marina literally went out and brought the idea to new heights of utter nonsense. It's always easier to let others create for you. 🙂 Her "The artist is present" can be meaningful only as a psychological anti-art gimmick, in which those who understood the point actually didn't attend the performance - i.e. did not serve as the proof that people are so lonely and vulnerable that they need their idol or role model to "comfort" them in the absence of closer ones. Otherwise, as a straight-forward art it's nothing.

As someone who is also a Slav, there is one thing I picked up on in the first part of the song. Older generations here still cling desperately to natural health, remedies, the theory that you can see most ailments just by examining the body externally. Most of these theories, despite some being actually true (such as the liver one), come from a time long before professional healthcare was available and attainable. The pesky spots/enlarged spleen part give off a vibe of fixating on these old wives tales because if you do not notice it yourself, then without access to a doctor, no one will.

THE LINE "On a bright summer day My skirts on my body My skirts, the dog and me The two of us walk, count the steps The skirt goes around my leg We walk and that's it" It actually refers to today’s stigma about people’s health and their activities as measured by smart watches and other technologies for counting our steps and calories. Ironic, but true. Such an amazing song. Pure art.

I'd rather say it is about calmness and happiness that comes from things we enjoy and don't overthink. The next lines are about having trust in her heart that it will go forward without her controlling it. Earlier she mentions the peripheral nervous system which is actually in charge of compulsive actions like the heart bit and is outside of the brain. It is rather about the happiness that is in accepting life as it is and the little things we start noticing after that.

This is pure art and tatal avantgarde. Lyrics may seem a bit silly at first, they are actually dead serious. There are so many layers to the song and a lot of space for different interpretations: The name of the song "In corpore sano" is in Latin and means "In a healthy body". It’s referring to the Latin saying "Mens sana in corpore sano" meaning "A healthy mind in a healthy body". - First: What is the secret to Meghan Markle's healthy hair? This is a reference to modern society's obsession with beauty! That's what beauty magazines do/they create insecurities about your hair, skin, weight, etc., and then advertise products that promise to change that. That's what the second line of the song is about "I think that the secret is in deep hydration" - Second: Konstrakta talks about how our skin and hair often signal some health issues, for example, liver and spleen problems. The reason she is thinking this is because she's worried about her own health, she can't visit a doctor for a check-up or get treatment because she doesn't have insurance, this is so important because independent artists in Serbia don't have health insurance. - Third: Then we hear her saying how an artist must be healthy, a reference to Marina Abramovic’s (internationally known Serbian performance artist) performances called “Art must be pretty, an artist must be pretty” where she sits for hours combing her hair while repeating that cause she realized people focused a lot on her looks and her hair being messy and prioritized that over her art, and the reason she needs to be healthy is that she can't afford to get treatment. - Fourth: the "Autonomic nervous system" part talks about how we don't need to control our own heartbeats. She describes how she walks her dog, on a beautiful summer day, her heart beats on its own, it doesn't need to get any better. She just puts her trust in her heart hoping it won't fail her (if it does fail her then that's it, the doctors won't help her and she made peace with that), and that's why she prays to God, "God give us health". - Fifth: She then says "I DON'T HAVE THE HEALTH INSURANCE!" (Even with "free" health insurance we are still paying a lot for medications, fees, etc. We are always paying insurance through salaries, for both employed and unemployed, and if you don't have "free" health insurance, you are paying way more, which is a situation with independent artists in Serbia.) - Sixth: Phrase "Boze zdravlja"/"God grant us health". This is a common saying, we use it all the time, and you will always hear people wishing other people good health (for their birthday, or really any holiday) because everything else (money, fame, love...) becomes meaningless if you are ill and in pain. She then says, the artist (she) is invisible, you can't see me, it's magic because she is invisible to health care, they won't treat her! - Seventh: Now, last part, it's basically the old Latin saying: Mens sana in corpore sano (A healthy mind in a healthy body), except that Konstrakta makes it clear that only the body is healthy, the soul inside is desperate, we are all obsessed with improving our health, we try to eat better, be more active, take all those expensive drugs and supplements, but what about our mind? Mens infirma in corpore sano - Weak mind in a healthy body Animus tristis in corpore sano - A sad soul in a healthy body Mens desperata in corpore sano - Desperate mind in a healthy body Mens conterrita in corpore sano - A frightened mind in a healthy body The endless chanting of the mantra about a healthy body is destroyed by enumerating the weaknesses of the mind and soul from which no health can be born. The final verse of the song "and what are we going to do now" is a jargon of common sense cold shower which was poured over the mass media propaganda about a healthy body without a healthy mind and soul, after making that clear she asks us - So what do we do now? Now about the handwashing: 1) She is dressed in white, she symbolizes the health care system (she reminds us of a nurse for example) and she is washing her hands. Why? Because of covid? NO! It is a metaphor about how health care workers need to "wash their hands off" meaning clear their conscience when they refuse to treat you because you don't have insurance. Just like when Pontius Pilate washed his hands before the crucifixion of Jesus - he tried to clear his conscience and make it clear that he wasn't the one who killed Jesus - it was the Law. In the same way, many people in the government or in positions are washing their hands off and can't help you because of the Law. 2) People standing behind her can be priests that pray for her health and/or are getting ready for her to die.

The "heart beats on its own" lyric was interpreted by me as something different. Like, we are living in a life full of anxiety, we want to control everything on our lives, and how amazing is our autonomic nervous system that makes heart to beat on its own so we don't have to control that too. I love the fact that everyone sees something different, yet we can all relate more or less to the central message of the song. Incredible song and performance! So artistic ♥️

I wanted Konstrakta to win Eurovision. Of course the judges may decide whatever they politics want but in the end I think that her song is iconic and not only the topic applies to Europe. Here in Mexico artists don't have health insurance either. If we have a health related issue, our options are: a) If we have the money, we could pay for health insurance to a private company such as Metlife or GNP. Also we could not do that and go directly to a private doctor although if he/she is a good one they will charge a lot. b) Go to a pharmacy in which they have a doctor (usually a recently graduated doctor, fresh out from med school), having an appointment and hope for the best. Sometimes these doctors are good, sometimes they aren't. Is basically a bet. c) Die. So yeah, Konstrukta's song was my favorite for so many reasons and I really wanted her to win although, in my humble opinion, I think she did in the public's eyes by getting a catchy song with a dark and deep meaning.

Marina Abramovic explained that she always believed that art should be provocative and shocking, not pretty. Konstrakta's song is exactly that. It shocked us at first, but then makes us think. Also, it is personal story about her not having health insurance, but she represents all people in the world without health insurance. Her massage is we need to find our little things that makes us calm and happy, our inner peace. For her it is walking a dog, nature ( flowers in her pocket), art. She is dressed as a nurse because she believes art can help the world to be a better place.

I think the mental health angle is the predominant one. The Meghan Markle line is about inward health abandoned for beauty - beauty is outward-looking health. Mental health is inside, if you're mentally unhealthy it's invisible. So Meghan Markle is beautiful and outwardly healthy and everyone focuses on looking outwardly healthy. We all abandon mental health. Props for the bit about 'the outro is in Latin because she can't communicate her mental health' - that's great.

Meghan Markle herself is someone who had serious mental health issues (she even had suicidal thoughts) but she had to keep them carefully hidden. At least until the Oprah thing. So even the person that Konstrakta aspires to emulate is struggling inwardly.

I would like to add one thing. Namely, the part referring to a dog, skirt and taking a walk goes: Letnjeg dana, jarke boje (Summer day, Vivid colors) Suknje moje na mom telu, suknje moje, pas i ja (Skirts on my body, my skirts, dog and I) Šetamo nas dvoje, brojimo korake (We are taking a walk together, we count our steps) Suknja ide oko noge moje, mi šetamo i to je sve (The skirt goes around my leg, we walk, and that's all there is) in the last part "i to je sve", means "and that's all there is". It refers to the absurdity of her action because she is not taking "inner enjoyment" in her "taking care of her health". She has a skirt, a dog and that's it, devoid of meaning. It is just as her mind is empty because any other intruding thought could deteriorate her health, even though her body might be "healthy" :) There are also much more philosophical depth in the song in other parts as well. Great job! Greetings from Serbia :)

Yeah I think in retrospect we really missed the point of the second verse. We seized on the skirt as being about her appearance, but I think the song pivots away from the tabloid obsession on appearance and more towards mental health. Gotta say, if we'd known this video would get watched so much we might have spent a few more days on it, because we left a lot unexplored!

What fun to watch this Overthing it clip! Maybe I missed it, but the most important sentence of the song was not addressed at all. I šta čemo sad? And what do we do now?
