Overseeding Pasture - The Project List
After a long, wet winter pastures are going to need some TLC, including overseeding, to get them back in shape. Overseeding or broadcast seeding a pasture is an inexpensive and quick way to rejuvenate and revitalize pastures. Today we get to work and bring new life into our feeding areas on The Project List.

I AM SO HAPPY you bottle feed, many use buckets, however nursing a bottle helps the calf release digestive enzymes, where bucket feeding does not
As always, great vlogs. Keep em coming
Great job Mike, wont be long until sweet little Mackenzie will be out there giving the "old man" a little help with the outside chores (seems she already has the chickens under control) What a great family,Blessings to the ranch -Jerry

Hereford cattle posters in the barn, I remember when my grandfather still had herefords on the family farm when I was growing up. Sounds like the perfect day for overseeding, right before spring rain or snow. Hopefully some cool weather until the new grass gets some roots going.

I know this post is old so you might not see my comment, but it worth a shot. I'm also a dry land rancher and I use to try the over seed with a broad cast seeder and had very little luck. I was able to find an old drill for $500 and it has paid for itself in wasted seed 10 times over. I would highly recommend it. My germination rates were way up. Since most drills have wider rows I do a double seeding going north to south then east to west. This fall I plan on doing one field north to south with dry land grass and then going east to west with alfalfa. Then the gaps in the rows of grass wont choke out the alfalfa. Just food for thought. Thanks for your video's

Hi Mike and Erin , I just would like to say before I joined your channel I knew little about farming and what hard work it entails. Living in a fantasy world I always had dreamt of living on a small off the grid farm that would be self sustainable hopefully using solar power and rain water or bore water if available. You Channel has certainly opened my eyes to alot of aspects that I would have never known as well as providing a great sorce of education also . Thank you for your marvelous channel and sharing your life with us green horns LOL.😀 it has given me great pleasure in watching and I look forward to watching your new Vlogs . Cheers from Down Under. 😊

Got the package. As soon as my car gets out of the shop I will put one in the window my old truck I am debating on because it could be embarrassing to your channel.
Hi Mike...I was waiting for you to just blast over all that tubing piled up in the shop (were you just a little bit tempted)....but then you would likely be sleeping in the shop :) That is one heck of a lot of seed slinging for one day for one Cowboy...good for you man. I had to turn on the AC tonight....getting warm in Justin Texas. Terry

I did think about it, but you are right. I would have been outside for the night. I'm hoping to soon remember what AC stands for but for right now it alludes me :) Thanks Terry- Mike
If you've got some extra wood or metal laying about, you could probably rig yourself up a bracket to mount that seed spreader to that trailer you were using with the cake feeder jobby. That way you can cart the spreader about and seed too. Cut down on the runs back and forth to the shop. Then again, I suppose what with your wind and all you'd probably loose more seed than the saved time would be worth.
@OurWyomingLife
6 жыл бұрын
Yeah the wind is always a factor. It usually does end up somewhere on the ranch. Thanks for the great idea! -Mikr

Mike, I too use a small seeder like yours to broadcast seed. I find putting the cow on the seeded field foe a few days help ensure seed to soil contact by virtue of hood action. I call it "trodding in the see."

I used to put down quite a bit a grass seed in the 80's with a spreader. Here's how we calibrated it. We removed the spinner on the spreader and hug a bucket. If you know your speed, distance covered and how far the seed will fly you have a certain area covered. Weigh the seed in the bucket and now you know how much seed you put down for a cover area. Homeowner grass seed expensive and didn't want to waste. I never trusted the indicators on the spreaders.

I dont trust them either, makes total sense. Thanks for the tip! - Mike

Great idea using the weather to your advantage. I seeded a new section of lawn last spring and tried to get it seeded right before the spring rains. That way I don't have to water it with the hose. It's laziness on my part I think! LOL! Sometimes lazy people are the best innovators. hahaha

Mike thanks for sharing buddy. I know all about seeding we put a lot of seed every fall normally around 3 palettes plus we aerate and some lawns we will do a total kill and remove all dead grass then aerate and either power or slit seed or broadcast seed the lawn yours seems to go a little faster than ours. LOL We use push spreaders and walk behind and ride on aerators . Hope the weather is good for your seed to come up in abundance . Not sure what is going on with youtube I have stopped getting notifications from your channel I have tried unsubscribing and then subscribing again and I have the bell clicked I think this is the only channel I'M not getting notifications for I'M going to see if they come back in a couple of days. Do you use any type of vetch? It is great for cattle feed. My Dad used vetch and brome with other natural grasses. Worked well in Nebraska sandy soil.
I don’t think I missed a video ... but little orphan Andy was quite a surprise ... 🤔 ... what happened? (We often raised bum steers and lambs for the summer and ‘converted’ them in the fall... I think my dad chose that time because my sister and I were back in school and he could do it while we were gone ... less drama!)

Gd job on the ranch. Ever considered using a layer of woodchips to capture moisture and protect the seedling?

Ditto on your voice. Clear, well modulated and authoritive! Why not keep your ranch as a hobby .....in the meantime there are many opportunities for a better paying and mostly fun career as voice actor. Teaching in industry would be a close second. Anyway, well done !!

Hello, great video for sure but I have a question about F1 22 still crashes from Directx
The seeding will still work even with snow on it? I always thought snow/cold would kill it off
reseeding usually means 2 to 5 years for the grass to establish for graze or baling.? depending on hot or cool season grasses. for us anyway.

Have you ever grew Sorghum Sudan grass there ? Or are the seasons too short? Here in TN we get a lot of tonnage from it, but when frost hits, its over. So may not work there. Just curious.
