Overland Tire Carrier Build Step 2. Ultimate Land Rover Discovery Build Episode 17.
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This is part 2 of my Overlanding Tire Carrier DIY! A lot of thought, planning and design goes into a fabrication project of this size. Today we knock out as much work as possible to get this Land Rover Discovery 2 off-road in style.

I like the gusset kit and other accessories that were prefab...I learned also.
I love how the tire carrier acts as "security" for the traction boards. It's little pieces of brilliance and forward thinking that separate the good from the great. It's all in the details.

dude, i’ve been watching you since your early bleepinjeep days and i just gotta say every single piece of your work is crazy. not just your fab work but your videos and editing are outstanding. it’s been really cool to see your channel grow and i’ve got a feeling you’re gonna follow in fred and dave’s footsteps and have your own tv show at some point. awesome disco by the way, love following this build.
As soon as you started talking about how to make things more comfortable I knew we were on the same page. I've had the same idea for a long time, glad you're knocking it out so I can copy the idea Nate!
I wish my door opened out like that, but it opens upwards. I really love your door mounted kitchen!
my tire swing has a drop down table with a slide out dish washing basket and an awning that opens up above it all. so sweet
Haven’t watched yet, but I still gotta like it right when I see the upload.

Thank you! I'm glad to hear you are enjoying the videos. I think there is still alot of room for innovation with the "typical" JK overland build. I bet you could come up with some ideas that no one has used in one of those builds if you brain storm enough. It's at least a great excuse to get out into nature, sit around a campfire and bounce ideas off of good company. Either way, thank you very much for watching and for the positive comment!
Your very intelligent.... You solved some very serious problems very simply and all from an idea. Respect!!
I’ve got a 85 ram charger which I’ve got tons of plans but now I have another one, your tire carrier. Thanks much.
Man that's an Adam Savage level belt sander right there!!

Swing arm set up makes lots of sense! If I recall correctly, the tailgates open to the passenger side so they aren't opening into traffic. Not so much a problem on the trail but something to keep an eye on if in the city 👊
I noticed the rubber band on the paper towel roll. Glad to see someone actually reading using advice in the comments. Even if it's something so small.
Right on, this is super cool. I have a big table that slides into my tire carrier, basically the swing arm has two square tubes and the table has two pegs that slide into them to hold it
This looks pretty beefy. Gonna be sweet to see the end result. The coolest latch I've seen for a bumper tire carrier so far has to be a bumper I saw where the guy pulled out the door lock from a truck and welded it into a little frame on the bumper. You swing the carrier closed and it auto latches just like a door and pull on a knob and it opens like a door. Was pretty slick.
Love the look of the build.
Adding an "open" locked position for any swing out carrier is a must. It prevents any accidental body damage in off-camber situations 😅
Great idea
Putting a padlock on the clasp is a good idea. As a locksmith I would recommend getting a good quality padlock. One that has pick resistance. A lot of padlocks are pretty easy to pick. You get what you pay for.
Nice job Nate!!!

With my first child I didn't have the chance to try this but now with the second, this has been a terrific discovery! It does indeed distribute the baby weight in a better way. I do feel like there could be more weight on my shoulders but I might need to play with the straps more and see if that improves.I absolutely recommend this to every single parent out there!
Thank you, Nate. All coming together! The mark of a good fabricator is the ability to adapt and change. Same thing for woodworking, which I know more about. Keep inspiring! 👍🤘👊

Awesome videos, you do a great job at teaching us how to do things, showing us different ways of doing it, thank you
I said it before. I love your fab videos.
I just purchased the same EMS kit 2 weeks before your last video. Glad I waited to start my build! I am building off the drivers side also, barn doors on my Burb so sides don't matter that much. But I want to keep the tire out of sight as much as possible so it's going far drivers and jerry can going on the passenger side. Keeps the bulk of the weight closer to the hinge to help prevent breakage from leverage. I was also planning on going 180* out and having a table flip down.
Did a fold down aluminum table for my XJ (all purpose rig) and everyone who sees it is amazed they didn’t think of it. Nicely done
Interesting that you like using a combination of square and round in projects. The Chinese call that Yin and Yang which is always used in their gardens and architecture. They believe using different shapes creates balance and looks better. Only just starting watching your videos. Enjoying all of them so far. I like how you explain every step of what you're doing. @@DirtLifestyle No worries. Totally agree. I'm definitely going to use your drivers side spare wheel carrier idea. I have a 1988 Land Rover 110 with the same V8 in that's probably in your disco. Is it the 3.9 fuel injected? I pulled my V8 from an old range rover to put in my 110.
That is actually a bad ass build. Good job
I've been so excited for this! Been waiting all week!
Awesome bumper and tire carrier...and the wierd music wasn’t too bad either..lol
Love your build and ideas
Simply badass!!!!
Wow, awesome idea. Even though I was looking at it with a semi-stink-eye, I knew I needed to be patient until you explained the reason why that carrier was opening towards the driver side. And boy, was I glad to sit tight.
That came out really nice! Great work
I was gonna suggest a padlock as well... glad you thought of that as well

As always, another fine job. This video, with the pivot on the left side has inspired me to do something similar to the camper I pull behind my Jeep. The camper will get a left side but also wrap around the corner pivot which will allow me to add our tent around the perimeter of the back of the camper. The Disco is looking great. Thanks

I was thinking, also, that the latch you welded on has a deeper latch, and even if the lever were to trip, the bar would have a much more difficult time coming out from behind the latch, but you're putting a lock on it, but if someone ever forgot to put the lock back on in a hurry, it still would be difficult to come out from behind the latch you welded on. You have spent a lot of time, not to mention labor and material, building this to be an overland vehicle. You've really done some great work on this, Nate!
Gonna need more than a padlock in tacompton... Also think you should drill out some holes in your "accessory mount" tube. Kinda like the jackstands so you can just use the pin to help secure whatever you end up building to put there. Plus side is then you can have a few different interchangeable accessory options as well.

Hey Nate, you should have that bumper wrap around the quarter panel to help keep the body damage down
Great job looks fantastic

First, let’s discuss the fact that you are the most talented guy I do not know. Lol. Most people I know use safety mechanism. Check out Rig’d mega swings as they have a cool secondary pin that also doubles as a lockout pin...as 37” is never cool swinging at you🥴. Again thanks for sharing and truly humbled by your skill set and I have tried to mimic many of the items you have built on my Rigs. Amazing project as always!

On a convoy security mission in Afghanistan we went through a small village in the morning where the street was clear and found they had built a three foot tall speed bump when we came back through, at 55 mph. Snapped a much larger spindle than you have there off of the lead truck who hit it at full speed and we had to figure out where to stash that spare so we could continue mission. I think your spindle is plenty strong, just mind your speed over the speed bumps. :)

Loved the soundtrack this time Nate....something different and intense.
I built a fold out/hinged table on my swing out bumper 5 or 6 years ago on my old 4runner, it was great having all of the extra "counter" space. I didn't really have any issues having it permanently attached to the swingout, I'd highly suggest permanently mounting it so you don't have to deal with putting it on and off every time you hit camp.

Nate you should run an off road / overland shop, your engineering and ideas are exceptional good.
Latching to the door carrier transfers your sag weight to the door hinges, certainly not as much weight as the original tire, but it may limit your door weight carry for the future. Plus, as you stated, the bumper and body shift differently, but you have more than enough off road experience to know what you are doing. I wouldn't have tried that approach for fear that long term it would cause wear, so I appreciate being able to take advantage of your skill. I've often wondered why tire carriers are not driver side mounted, for exactly the reasons why you are doing yours this way. It gives you the back side of the carrier as a cargo/cooking area. Because I've never encountered one, I figured there must be some downside I'm unaware of. The obvious ones don't seem all that bad. Harder to open the back door as you have two swings now, and if in a parking area, you have to be far more careful of opening the tire carrier. I really can't wait to see how you finish this because I'll change my plans to driver side swing based on your experience. Your channel gives me confidence to attempt builds I've been scared to try, as they are different than most, so thank you.
@wolfkin73

The only downside i see is if your using an awning you have to walk around the tire carrier to get around it, putting you out in the weather. Or if you are in a smaller parking space walking around the tire puts you in the brush. I don't think its really a problem, not sure id do it, a table is movable.
Killer Stuff!
Gives me a great idea how to make this system work on my pick up.
Like the L Shape. Waiting to see how you finish it up. Really enjoy your vids Nate. Keep it up.

The fact that the back opens sideways is really cool. This build has made me look at land rover prices here in Portland. Of course as cheap as they are if I bring home another project I'll have to factor in cost of divorce 🤣😅😅
Great build man! I really like the way you keep your ideas flowing and fab one piece at a time with thought in it. Keep it up.
