I've done this trail twice, once in a CJ-5 and one on ATV's. We started at Paradise Divide/Schofield Pass, went down to Devil's Punchbowl and then on to Crystal Mill, turning around and returning. The trip on the ATV's were with my brother Fred and my brother-in-law, Eddie. I have a photo of the three of us taken at the very pond at which you camped at at Paradise Divide (absolutely stunning vista). It is indeed a treasured image for me. Sadly, my brother passed away a few years later. We all agreed that this was the best trail ride that we all did together. I truly appreciate the opportunity to relive that experience through watching your exceptional video. So, thank you for that. I'm in OKC, OK and you have earned my subscription. BTW - the wife and I now four-wheel with a Honda Talon. Hope to get it up to the Gunnison/Taylor/Crested Butte area soon. Steve

Schofield is a fun pass road, but it is also where the worst off road accident in CO happened. In 1970, 9 people were killed when a Suburban went off into Devil's Punchbowl. A Suburban...yikes. Good video.

The worst part of Schofield for me was at 5:48 in your video. I did it alone in 2016 in my 79 gmc Jimmy. That rock on the left that looks like the bridge of a nose in profile was only 72 inches or so from the edge of the road. That's how wide it is from the outside edge if my front tires! The wheel track on a gmc Jimmy is about 3 inches wider than a jeep wrangler. When I was trying to decide if I should attempt this spot, I measured my rear tire width, not realizing that my front axle track is 3 inches wider than the rear axle. I wish I could have seen how close my front tires came to going over.

Great videos! I did the Devil's Punchbowl on August 18th. But then went back up and around back to Crested Butte and then did Cement Creek/Reno Divide/Italian Creek trail. I took the lower part of Reno Divide and it was one of the roughest roads I've driven. Beat the heck out of my (2" lifted) Xterra's 3/16" skid plates and I still had to pound out a spring hanger that got bent on a boulder. Also came across a very nice upsidedown Jeep on what was probably the easiest part of that trail. It had probably only been there for a day or so.

Great content and amazing drone footage. I really enjoy the map portion of showing the route. But it occurs so fast I can’t see where you are starting and ending. Maybe a slower overview of the map and point out where you are starting and ending, then you can run the route with the little digital marker... but at 1/2 the speed, then we can understand it. Thanks!

Just a few corrections. The dangerous part of this trip is called the Crystal Canyon not Schofield Pass. The pass is about 2 miles south of this spot. I Toyota prius can do Schofield Pass. If you base the deadliest place between the Crystal Canyon and Black Bear on how often people die then Black Bear wins. The s o b trail is a foot trail above the Crystal Canyon to avoid dangerous slides in the winter. I live in Schofield Park.

  • @OzarkOverlandAdventures

I have never heard it called Crystal canyon anywhere. All guide books and websites call the trail Schofield Pass.

@@OzarkOverlandAdventures look on a topographical map or a national forest map. In the the rockies a pass is a high point on a route or a watershed divide. Granted the sign on top of Schofield Pass is so full of stickers you can't read what it says but that's the pass 2 miles south of the canyon. Some people also call it the devils punchbowl but it's just a part of the Crystal Canyon.

Great content! Watched the entire Colorado series and sharing with friends. Given your experience, what would a "newbie" buy to get started in this sport. I have a 2007 Dodge 6.7 Cummings 2500. Do I throw money into (lights, bumper, 35's, roof rack) and enjoy the cargo capability, or too limiting? Maybe the Jeep or a Four Runner the way to go? Hoping to join a local Search and Rescue group and like a good rig. High country of Utah/Colorado. Any help appreciated. Captain D

Thanks!!! I have zero experience wheeling a full size rig. It definitely limits you on the trails you can run unless you've got balls of steel. LOL! Unless you need the room of a full size I would go Jeep Wrangler Unlimited,Gladiator, 4Runner, Tacoma, or Colorado ZR2. Or wait until the new Bronco comes out. Those look awesome!! From a pure off road performance standpoint, the Wranglers have to be recovered the least of all the rigs in our group.
