Making money off variegated versions of plants is out of control. So many look terrible when variegated. Well, I say, “Go ahead!” The plants I like will be even more affordable! Loving my green. Thanks, Drew, for saying what needs to be said.

The only ones that are variegated in my collection are the pothos varieties. Most others are just too high priced. I'm on a tight budget, so buying super expensive plants is a no.

I agree 100%! Many of these would make me think, "Oh! Is it OK? Is it supposed to look like this? Hm!" I would actually run far away from that Monstera laniata 'Mint', thinking that it had spider mites. Just looking at the picture made my skin crawl.

Apart from the fact that I’d never spend more than a hundred euros on a plant because they can randomly die even in the ideal care conditions, I don’t think I will ever buy a plant that looks sick by default. I need to be able to tell. A plant should not stress me out if it’s not actually struggling!

I couldn't agree with you more, Drea.....it's ridiculous out there in the planty world. There are so many hybrids out there that it's crazy where some of the plantuber's aren't even sure what the plants are named. Some of the companies just feel like renaming a plant to make you feel like it's "NEW" on the market. When will it stop on the pothos as well? How many do we need and many just revert back so what's the point, anyways? Love this segment getting all of our opinions heard. We need more of this :))

I agree with all your choices. For nearly all plants I prefer the non variegated. It’s a fad that will pass for lots of these plants driven by the internet . When they all start reverting people will be reluctant to part with the high prices that they command.

For me it was the extreme hype of Monstera albo. It became a real status symbol on my local plant group at the height of the pandemic. You weren’t one of the cool kids if you didn’t have one. It was like the Louis Vuitton purse of the plant world! I thought they could be attractive with the right variegation pattern, but not $300 per cutting attractive!

I agree with most of what you are saying regarding the sickly look of many varigated plants. I do have a pink princess from the first batch and it has all those terrible traits you mentioned. I am chopping it today as the spaces between the petioles are way to long to make an attractive climber. It is currently on a 3ft moss pole, partly attached. I do however have a milk confetti which has lots of pink splash on it. The splashing seems to be dependent on receiving high light. Good video.

I haven't encountered many of the plants you discussed but syngoniums! So many of those with pink are unappealing to me because they look brownish and on death's door. That being said I rescued a variety of unnamed pink syngonium and, in the right light, it actually looks pretty. I just don't put it where it looks more brown.LOL. That's the only sygonium I will buy with pink.

I agree with you on the Monstera Mint I would have passed that up in a heartbeat thinking it was unhealthy and for $230 no thanks. I do like the Syngonium Pink Confetti. I saw a whole bunch when doing my Plant Tour at a Nursery yesterday, but they do not talk to me. The pink princess wow I agree. I bought one in December 2023 when I first started getting into the tropical “rare” plants and honestly I bought it out of pure “internet buzz excitement”. I cannot stand poles and I didn’t know that when I bought it 😂, so I chopped it down and it’s now a bushy pink princess in water. If you’re interested I have a video up on it and another one coming because I cannot get it right. 😂 I have pink princess regret right now, but maybe that will change 😅.

The black cardinal variegated gives me cardboard autum vibes hahaha. I totally agree with your list! I dont need the confusion of "are you sick or not?" I also dont need to pay extra for that stress. Im a bit of a plant tight ass (currently not working) so i usually buy $5 small plants BUT i do look up the mature version before i buy it. Also also! I was typing this as you showed the beaten up syngonium and if i was drinking coffee, i would have spat it out hahahahaha Also also also! Your hair is soooo beautiful 🤩

I agree with you a million times over. I started the plant journey in 2020........I spent a lot of money on these trending plants that died. I never bought them again. Lesson learned. I now am more aware of what kind of plant I would like to have in my collection. Like, I have a Monstera collection. A Pothos collection. An Anthurium collection. Also, a variety of Philodendron. And Spider plants. The hype to me is disgusting on some plants. I agree with you!!! I SAY, It's about your plant collection , NOT THE HYPE!! Thank you, sweetie. I love this video.

I am SO with you on this one. Clean clear variegatations can be stunning but those muddy messes that look like they are diseased or at the very least tragically nutrient-deficient are a big NO for me. I want plants that, when I look at them, inspire happiness and a sense of peace. I do NOT want to be thinking "gee, I know this is how she is SUPPOSED to look but holy crap she looks like holy crap" and have me feeling more than a bit of buyer's remorse. And even worse, feeling like I have to sort of pretend to be happy with her and obligated to keep her because I spent money on her. As far as the "pinks" are concerned, I love the pink/red aglaonemas. Many of them achieve what I think is a wonderful balance between the greens/whites/pink/reds and look absolutely beautiful. Thanks for a GREAT video!!

Oh my gosh, I totally feel this way about any Amydrium...why would anyone want to own a plant that looks perpetually diseased? I have NEVER seen one that appeals to me and don't understand the hype. As for the pink princess, I don't know what iteration I own, but I didn't acquire it during the "first wave"; I got it later, at Walmart, of all places, for a really decent price. It isn't marbled but the variegation is beautiful. However, it has problems sizing up, unfurling, and climbing. Coincidentally, I planned on chopping it back TODAY, and starting over, thinking, just maybe, my care was the problem...but maybe its not me. I 'm not willing to throw in the towel just yet. Since we are going into the growing season here in the US, I'm giving it the summer to improve and I'll wait until the fall to make a decision about keeping it...and I would really love a red anderson, but I have never seen them in shops near me in Ohio. Great video, Drea, thank you once again!

Pink princess is an old cultivar, from like the 1960s-70s. I think they were fairly much forgotten about then the pandemic rolled around it was "rare". the ones passed around during the pandemic had hot garbage for genetics, people were just slicing and dicing whatever they got their greedy little hands on and putting them on Etsy, a lot of them were immature cuttings, when you cut up juvenile philodendrons you get plants that will never mature, they grow kind of twisted and never produce cataphylls.

I do like the strawberry ice and would love to own one! I agree on the variegated melano, looks sick to me also but the milk confetti has such an unusual color of green that I think it’s pretty, the pink isn’t what makes the plant but the color of the green. I have to disagree on the PPP being a climber, mine is well rooted into its moss pole and the leaves are huge but I never really thought they were worth the money people paid for them in the beginning. I also have the marbled variety and it’s much prettier. I’ve never heard of nor have I seen that last plant…it’s awful!! Thanks for an interesting video!❤️

Absolutely agree! I'm not a pink girl as a baseline but definitely not when the pink makes the green look muddy! I *might* consider a pink varigation if the green part is actually green. Not mud brown. I do love mint green but it has to look mint, uniform with a blueish tint, and not just sickly green... That said, there is NO WAY I'm going to spend triple digits, or even high double digit on a plant!!! Case in point, I've wanted a Monstera albo for 5+ years but the prices were ridiculous. I finally got mine 8 months ago for 25€ (20 US$) for an established, 5-leaf, plant. Any trending plant, assuming it's healthy enough to be cultivated to mature size, will come down in price. Just wait. If you still want it three years down the line, then get it. If it never makes it to mass market then it's because there's something wrong with it.

A lot of the yellow variegated plants look unhealthy to me. I’d add the Philodendron Caramel Marble together with the Cardinal you mentioned but I can understand why some people find this type of variegation appealing. It looks a bit like perpetual autumn leaves, which I like autumn colours… Another one that looks unwell to me is the Monstera Obliqua but again, to each their own. It would be boring if everyone’s plant collections looked the same 🤷🏻‍♀️

Agreed 100%, the white monster looks sick and has pests. Plants like the Melano and Alocasia's just shouldn't be variegated. Leaves that have natural interest in veining and fenestrations are gorgeous that way they are, then add weird variegation and I think it's just way, way too much!! Yeah, I don't like the muddy look, in fact I don't like the camo look either. "A plant that got beat up and is bleeding out" - LOL!!!

  • @ADHDKING

I think lots of these look terrible but I also find that people have put too much faith in growing in sphagnum or chunk soil/peat free medium with liquid nutrients added. They don’t know what they are doing and either don’t give enough nutrients or cause nutrient lock out. Makes a lot of plants look worse and questionable. Lots of these variegated or non variegated plants thrive in a constant source of nutrient rich soil containing some peat, worm castings and perlite. Add more light and silic acid (optional) for variegated plants if they’re prone to reverting. Specifically Monsteras and most philodendrons will grow healthier and bigger, faster, stronger. Keep it simple and keep your variegation. Great video! those plants are gross though except pink princess mines awesome 😂.

Info on silicon if people have tc issues more reason to use silic acid: silicon protects against pathogens that cause foliar diseases, such as blasts, blight, powdery mildews, leaf spots, ruts, Botrytis and stem rots and root diseases, including Pythium and Phytophthora. And it guards against pests such as stem borers, hoppers, leaf miners, aphids, thrips, spiders, and mites.

If i were at a smoothie shop, i would in fact not buy a drink called a "pink strawberry iced mint smoothie swirl". 😂 so i dont make similar decisions for plants. Im not big on pink anyway. A lot of these youve shown do look sickly.

I do not understand all the hype on variegated plants, especially the PPP. The shade of pink it produces is nice, but paired with that dark, dirty green, the colors totally clash.

I'll add to your rant by saying P. Black Cardinal is a gorgeous plant! I've had mine for about 7 years now and it's one of my favourites. Yes, it's a slow grower but it will withstand a ton of abuse and still keep going. This variegated version is a travesty! 🤮

Hey Drea 👋 I entered the social media plant world not long ago and honestly it’s so annoying to me lol I can’t stand people “shaking” their plants at the camera and just all the plant hype. People with their moss poles, nope. One leafed plant hype, nope. Purple lights, nope. Naming plants Fred and what not, nope. I don’t get so much of it and that’s ok… I’ll do me lol I agree so many look unhealthy. I can find unhealthy plants at Walmart for cheaper. 😂 ☠️ maybe it’s like the heroin chic era of plants 🤣 😂 The only “pink” plant I’m still obsessed with is the stromanthe 🩷

Agree with all what you've said and I know some of these people. It all gets started by being the first u-tuber with a hyped up plant and then all of them will hype it up too. It served them right when the craze on the ppp went from you just gotta get one for hundreds of dollars to what a financial letdown to buy them for $20 at Lowe's now. I just laugh at so many plantubers trying to hype because they want you to succumb and buy all these plants. No, thanks! I'd rather go out and get a few bags of groceries so I can eat well and stay healthy. How about all the ones that say they are on a no-buy plant ban and the very first store they shop at........they find the most perfect plant and had to have it. It's comedy at its best. I also like the stromanthe except my furniture is in the peachy tones and the pink would not look good. But I always liked that plant :))

Well, I don't understand what the hype about variegation in general is. To me, these always looked like something is not quite right, irregularly shaped and colored. I have not ever chased variegated plants. They are almost always twice or more as expensive as their natural all green non-variegated counterparts. And as I understand it, variegation comes with it's issues... slower growth, all colorless parts (white) parts tend to die off, reversion, etc... I think a lot of this is also personal preference. They won't appeal to everyone, but there is always going to be someone to whom these will appeal. I agree with your assessment on most of these plants, however.

For me it’s a space issue. I live in an apartment with not many windows and I just can’t accommodate a big plant like this without dedicating a large chunk of a room for it and some decent grow lights. I’d love to be able to have a nice big monstera or a bird of paradise though, but it’s like trying to fit a big dining table in our living area 😅
