People do not realize the hood problem. I just figured out my notchback gets over 200 when the hood is closed. When i have it opened the car sits at 180-190 my fans kick on at 190 and off at 180

Thanks for this video. It helps dispel misconceptions some may have about how the cooling system works. Great example of how to check your thermostat. Also how important it is to keep the deflectors on to duct the cool air properly to the radiator. A lot of people don't understand the difference of an extraction hood and a hood scoop. I'm a big fan of your channel,. This is a great FYI topic . I haven't done this since tech school in 1985. I have always been a 160° thermostat. One tinny tip I was taught by the old timers was drilling a hole in the thermostat base. Big enough to let some coolent flow in the event it becomes stuck. It's not fool proof it's something that I believe the " old timers " have wisdom beyond their ways . I have done this on my Fox's since 1986. Enjoy 💯🇺🇲

It always time for refresher on things, we had did the same thing on a marine engine thermostat at work many years ago, like you i thought they worked a lot faster, but it's always good to see this stuff again. Just wanted to say the retro fox does sound pretty sweet with the cam & the exhaust.

@Brew2l......cars coming along and has really turned into a really sick build! Just seems of late you make a step forward and 2 back, from setbacks. As far as the cooling on it have you considers running maybe one or possibly 2 (space provided) of those small 7 inch e-fans to push some air from the front and then pull with the set already mounted to pull that ambient air across everything??

Very informative, we in the south know this problem all too well especially in summer.

Good video! I have a Griffin radiator with a high flow 160 and mine runs about 170-175 most of the time. I did have a high flow water pump and I couldn't get heat in the engine! Had to put an stock pump back on. The combinations are endless! N/A life though...

put the air damn on, its there for the Coanda effect and throw the 160 in the trash the 160 will stay fully open until after you park the car, Fluid needs time in the radiator to transfer heat when the cooling system is sufficient. a lower temp stat will never help if you can't transfer the heat out of the system as it is, It just makes it worse. This is why newer cars use PWM fans to maintain temps these days and can pretty much hold them there within a few degress. You can also make a sheet metal heat shield that goes over the cross over pipe so the heats deflected away from the radiator but I doubt that's causing much heat soak as it is.

Reminds me of working on my old 72 F100. Was having cooling issues during winter, auto choke wouldn't work properly...took out thermostat, got a pan a thermometer and some water. First time I diagnosed my own truck.

I could not find a air deflector for my Mustang so I picked up a 2000 Ford Taurus air deflector and cut it to fit and it fit perfectly under my Mustang

I got my 91 lx hatch, had it since new, I changed all the original stock coolant system as the car was getting a bit to hot anyway 1 problem I had was the white crude and some rust on the bolts, using a torque wrench and reaching the torque spec some bolts couldn’t do their job, cleaning the bolt holes out is needed now😊

If you ever wondered if the contour fans fit a big rad and a 10 rib vortech, it does!

My fox has always had weird overheating issues. Before the SVE radiator it would get very bad on the highway and bad in say a drive though. With a new thermostat and SVE radiator, highway driving is fine but sitting in traffic for a long time or a drive through will get it hot. Not to mention I always mysteriously lose coolant

i got the old school twin turbo hood ......they look good and let out a lot of heat

160 degree t-stats are for boats, which use liquid to liquid heat exchangers, or raw water cooling, both of which are more efficient, and have unlimited cool water to use.

I like my 2 inch cowl hood..but I hate to say it..but a duel scoop would probably work best for your car..cool air in hot air out.

Ive Never had luck with a clutch fan. The only issue ive had with an electric fan is my fox alternator was too weak and wouldnt let the fan really go into high speed.

I run distilled with one bottle of water wetter.. in the sw florida heat at idle etc it doesn't go above 180.. ever..now full disclosure I do run a maziere 55lph waterpump..sve radiator and black magic fan.. the fan is so bad I feel a breeze from it if it's on and I put my feet out the door.. I'll never use anything else.. this is on a 408w with afr 205s..170 thermostat..pa c4..3800 stall.. street car.. never take it to the track.. I'm currently running sunoco 100 octane but I'll be going e85 car is plummed for it pfte..

I'm a bit confused by what's considered running hot. I have a basically stock 87 LX 5.0. The stock gauge in the cluster indicates hot (red) at 270 deg. The bottom of the gauge displays 130, so halfway between is ~200 degF. I've got a new radiator, water pump, T-stat, sending unit, and almost all hoses are new (only some of the small ones are not). After refilling with 50/50 green and thoroughly bleeding the system, then sitting still idling on a hot day here in Alabama, it crept up to ~235 F. Is that close to normal, or should I be concerned? I do know that I need to do a few more drain, run and refills to get my coolant back looking clear. The engine block's water passages seem to be bleeding rust (I had a body shop do some work several years ago after an elderly lady hit me, and I think they put straight water in it after replacing the radiator and didn't tell me...guess I was busy then and didn't think to check the ratio).

I can vouch for the extra heat, especially in a turbo car (being in Louisiana sure doesn't help). I have a 10-14 GT500 hood vent that I'll be cutting down and adding to my stock hood. Never cared for the cowl hood approach, since it is more likely to push air into the engine bay at speed.

I just put a freshly built 30 over 302 in my stang... Have a 3 row Rad... Dual Fan Mishimoto setup.. flexalite adjustable fan controller.. my stat opens right at 180 and I have the fans set to kick in at 195.. come off at 185 above the stat closing.. but this dam car likes to run around 200-205 when its smoking hot out... Is this concerning??!.. hot starts suck... Had to wire up a fan controller overide so that fans arnt on when I crank it up hot...

Wish i had u around to help me with my overheating problem on my 95 gt. Just put new hoses and 160 degree thermostat and a new sve aluminum radiator and still tries to overheat

Where does the air deflector attach?

my engine bay gets so hot I'm not sure if I have a exhaust leak and I don't have a deflector I definitely need to stop using tap water

Father in law failed to test my thermo on my 70 F100 as I rebuilt the 351W… upon brake in, popped the upper hose in HIS garage😢😂

A lot of people take the air damn off but it for sure helps shove air across the radiator while driving. Ask me how I know. 😂

Just my opinion I’d put the air damn on before buying a hood. 180 should be the correct stat to use so it doesn’t stay open only circulating hot water.

Dude I was at 230 degrees, it was so hot my belt melted and ripped off! I can’t figure out why it’s getting so hot.. everything was perfectly fine until I changed my head gaskets. 200 was the hottest it got. I’m literally going nuts trying to figure it out.. my head gaskets blew bc I installed a suppercharger, and then I put a smaller pulley on…smh

I just put a 180 degree thermostat in my 91 lx. Do you think I'll have problems with that? I just wanted it to run alittle kooler than 210. It seemed real hot at that 210-220

I run a 180 stat on my 89 with no problems. Seems to run better than when it had a 160 in it.

Anybody know a good resource for posting questions regarding foxbody's? My 91 5.0 has developed the dumbest issue and I just can't track it down at all :( I'm running out of things to replace on it.

Thought you American's had summer all year round..why you need a thermostat. You don't need more heat...I don't have a thermostat my car is summer only..no heater core..only use antifreeze for winter storage ...Canada..50 foot snow banks.

He could of grab a small propane torch and heat it up but lately it’s been all about flexing all the toys ... poser .....
