I diassemble, clean, replace the bearings, lubricate and re-assemble the bottom bracket on a 1974 Atala road bike. I also replaced the cotter pins which required filing new ones.

... why not use a steeltube to hammer down the pins , and spare the ball bearings from that hammer ??

hello RJ! I'm looking for the right tool to remove a Ventura cranck, the right side. The back side arm has " ECO Bycicle Italy" marks on it. Could I sent you a picture?

RJ -- You are the Sheldon Brown of the KZread age! Seriously great videos. Another method of cotter pin removal for anyone interested: 1 - Lube the cotter pin with a penetrating oil (I prefer Tri Flow). Very important step! Don't skip it. 2 - Create a improvised cotter pin press using a c-clamp and an 8mm (or thereabouts) socket to receive the pin. 3 - Tighten the c-clamp down. If the pin doesn't break free with moderate to heavy pressure, then... 4 - Brace the crank arm and give the clamp a stout wack with a hammer. The cotter pin should pop loose. So far this method hasn't failed me yet!
Just did the same process yesterday with the same components. Cotter pins are tricky little bastards, mine had to be hammered too, also didn't find exact replacement, so i went with a similar one but the angle wasn't just right. Its got stuck, going to remove it and hand file it like you did. I was thinking about it before I've got started but, it was worth a try. Repairing these bikes is almost an form of art, i believe. I like how much patience you have
I may be teaching my granny to suck eggs, but my father taught me this way of removing a cotter pin. If you don't have an extraction tool such as yours, the other way is the dreaded hammer but watch the bicycle frame when you hit it with the hammer...it flexes and most of the force just goes through the frame. What you need ideally is an anvil to stand the crank on (we used to have a cobblers anvil at home) but providing you have something solid....even a concrete block on the ground. Then the force of the hammer on the cotter pin will be immense by comparison to just hitting it with the bike standing and the cotter pin should just drop out. I have rescued many bikes with snapped off cotter pins using the above method.
I find it helpful to loosen the crank taper pin nut a little bit and then tap on it with a hammer. This may break the pin free and avoid buggering the threads.

I remember having the same type of lock rings on the BMXs we had as kids. We didn't know about those hook spanners at the time, wish we did as it would saved our knuckles from being bashed from using a screwdriver and hammer to undo the rings!
Atala's bikes are produced in Monza, the city of the famous F1 car race!

+lornaz1975 Yes. The left side is always right hand threaded. The right hand hand side is usually left hand threaded except for vintage Italian and French bikes mostly.

Another quick thought: As far as cotter pins are concerned, it is my understanding that the exact taper is not important so long as the following conditions are met: 1 - The tapers of both cotter pins match (to produce cranks that are 180 degrees apart from one another when properly installed). 2 - The flat of the tapper on the cotter pin is sufficiently long enough for the pin to fully engage the spindle when installed. 3 - When pressed into place, the threads of the cotter pin protrude from the crank arm far enough for the nut to be fully threaded on. In other words, your viewers may find that the tapper of a replacement cotter pin is sufficient and that no filing is necessary. But only a little experimentation in each instance will tell.

With manufacturing tolerances being what they are sometimes, filing might be necessary to get the tapers on new pins to match anyway!

All the new pins I buy have too steep of a taper so I have to file them anyway.

have a Puch bike of same era and bracket that wobbles maybe 1mm - hope it can be fixed like this and there's not damage inside

That was a very popular low/midpriced bike back in the day.
One could insert the spindle and do the other side a lttle before tightening the fixed cup like that. Then you won't risk knocking any bearings loose.
This time I like how you did it, disassembling everything and changing the damaged bearings and greasing again. Perfect. Could you do the same job with a current fixie bike? Because the shaft and the clamping nuts are different. Thanks for the video and take care.

If the shaft and the clamping nuts are different, then it sounds like you have a different crank and bottom bracket, so the procedure will likely be differeent.
Is there a way to replace this style of bottom bracket with a more modern version, possible an inexpensive sealed style? If so, what are some examples and what sizes would I need? Attempting to single speed convert a 1970's Romana

+MARCHA 12 BIKE It's on hold. I haven't been able to find the decals, so until I do, I am not bothering to get it painted. So pretty much at a standstill.
Why not use your cotter pin tool to press the cotter pin back on instead of hammering it in?
Very beautiful Campagnolo cable guide around the bb .. Looks like nuovo record rear mech .. Beautiful classic bike ! Are the wheels 630 ? Not 622 ?

Are the fixed cups from cotter cranks usable with the squire taper I'm trying to replace it with. Fixed side seized!

Not directly. The ball bearings will roll in a different part of the race and wear it out fast.
Ah good old cotter pins. When pedals were easy to take off. By the way, my pin press works great,,,,,, its a 2 pound hammer :-) @05:01 "find oot" Canadian by any chance?

American, but I think I picked up a bit of Canadian accent from my Canadian friends. LOL!
you dont want the nut side of pins to be on facing up as you push down and back as the nut and exposed threads will catch a shoelace and or pant leg or something.
I bought an Vintage Bottechia Campione Del Mondo 1966 10 speed this year and apparently I need a new bracket/spindle do to the crankarms are unparallel. A question can I use a different type of spindle and crankarms??

Probably. You would probably need an Italian threaded BB.
I realy dont like, how you hammered on the pins, without realy suporting the axel. I, for example, had an accident, after removing and reinstalling the drive side pin with a hammer... the axle broke someday, while driving uphill. So please, put the bike on the ground and put something under the cranks to support the axle. Also screw the nut back on the pin(until it forms a flat surface) to not destroy the threads. I would put the pins in the other way. You said there is a debate about it, but for me its pretty logical. The way you installed them, the small side of the filed down cotter pin, has to transfer the most force on the axle. This is especially problematic/important for the nondrive side, because the driving force has to transfer through the axle to the driveside. If you put the pin in, the other way, the larger part of the pins are holding against the axle, whilest pedaling forward, which puts less strain on the connection/joint.

When you tap on things like that it results in brinneling. Knocks the bearing into the races. No good.

I just said the very same thing to Mr. R.J. a minute ago : to use a steel-hollow-tube under the crancks to tap with the hammer on top of the tube and spare the ball-berings .
What's better to use on the BB threads, grease or anti-seize compound?

I use grease.
If you want to see the BB repair, you can skip the process of removing the cotters, and go straight to 04:04.
there seems to be a lot of slack in the chain rj,a lot more than just stretch,is there a problem with the springs in rear deraileur?,also noticed the cotter pins u used have nylock nuts rather than a regular nut & spring washer. also a great idea to place the chain on the large chain ring to prevent injury/skinned knuckles when working on cotter pins,can laugh about it now but back in the day i bashed my knuckles several times over the years & when it happens the air will turn blue ( ie swearing/cursing from the pain) :D

+neil crompton I used a gauge on the chain and it is very worn. Someone may have replaced the chain and put one on there that is too long. I have gotten to that yet.

How can I get such kinda freehub sound? in 0:21 I like that bicycle's freehub sound, mine is very silent. :( Can you offer me somethink similar with that freehub that I might change mine?

+Sinan Basalan The sound comes from either thin or lack of lubrication. If you want the sound, flush all the grease and oil from your freehub. It will make lots and noise and wear out quickly.

I don't see what people have against kickstands. They serve a purpose, unless you don't mind laying your bike in the dirt.

Hahaha! Kickstands are the worst! A kickstand once became lose and interfered with my pedaling. I fell of course. Kickstands are just a nuisance.
