Overhated and Underrated? | Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts (Banjo-Kazooie Series Retrospective)

Ойындар

It's time to wrap up the Banjo-Kazooie series retrospective with the controversial vehicle-builder, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. Rare changed up the gameplay heavily for the duo's Xbox 360 debut, and fans are still upset about that to this day. But is the hate this game receives really deserved? Or is there genuine innovation in Nuts & Bolts that makes it an underrated masterpiece? #BanjoKazooie #BanjoKazooieNutsandBolts #RareReplay

I'd like to note that while it's never explicitly told, you can jump out of the log's choice vehicles and then tinker around with them while the timer stays paused which turns them into a challenge of creating a better vehicle for the challenge with the parts you're given and honestly, that's what it should have been from the start.

Just realized this on my most recent play of Nuts and bolts. I’ve always enjoyed the game and spent hundreds of hours as a kid just goofing around in the test track. I always dreaded the logs choice challenges because the vehicles seemed to be designed in intentionally frustrating ways. Now I’m looking forward to breaking all the logs choices i hated as a kid

while this mechanic was definitely helpful for some challenges, I didn't see myself using it that much as your vehicle resets every time you reattempt the challenge. would've been cool if you were given a set amount of parts to make a vehicles out of for LOG's choice challenges or at least have your edits to the preset saved across attempts

I'm sure Nuts & Bolts is a good game by itself. The problem is the fact that when this game was "teased" old time veterans thought we were finally going to get the Banjo-Threeie that Grunty talked about at the end of the last game. But what we got instead was nothing at all like what was expected.

Nut and bolts is part of my childhood so I might be a bit biased. But I think it is a great game as someone that never played of any other Banjo Kazooie game. I spent so much time competing with my friends in local co-op and built so many different vehicles it gave me so much creative freedom and for that simple reason I will always look fondly upon that game!

Fun fact. For the logs choice missions, you can cheat. Right as the mission starts, get out of the vehicle and then edit it. 15:32 fun fact: (ignoring the glitch that lets you fly the trolley anywhere you want) you can get every crate in this game (outside the ones behind the laser walls that you would need a glitch to do) before entering the first world if you explore and are creative enough. In the center of showdown town, there is a ledge you can drive off (I believe if you drive counter clockwise around Log's building at the top of the mountain, just drive straight when you see the wire you're supposed to climb up. At least I think thats where it is, Its been awhile), and this'll put you on the higher ledge of the town with your vehicle. Outside of that, you can run around on foot, jump on the geometry of the walls and buildings, or stack boxes in your try to give you an easier time to climb up. You'll find you can get into A LOT of areas you're not supposed to yet by effectively abusing the platforming abilities you have (which is pretty ironic on multiple levels). Honestly, it kind of sucks knowing that theres just a flying glitch that lets you do everything easily cause 'breaking' the game just by platforming was pretty satisfying to find out. You could argue this is kinda neat, but it feels more like they werent expecting you to platform for anything in this game so you can cheese things to get alot of crates before you're supposed to have them. I was really disappointed when there were no platforming missions at all, and I tried to complete some missions without using a vehicle specifically because of this. On the note of Online: I remember playing the game online with friends overseas or with random people online and that was alot of fun. It was more just fun to see all the goofy vehicles other people had made up in the testing track, rather than actually playing any of the mini-games. You cant break specific parts off a vehicle while playing online, but you could find some very cool creations people have made. One guy had a Giant gun with ammunition and lasers (obviously), but then they had ANOTHER vehicle that was of a hand holding the gun, and you could actually fly the gun, into the hand, and it would be able to hold it perfectly. It was really cool to see how creative some people got with these things. Of course this is pretty irrelevent today but I still have some fond memories of back then

When i first heard that there was going to be a new Banjo-Kazooie i was thrilled. Than i watched the trailer and understood that this wasnt actually a new Banjo game, it was a vehicle creation game that just happened to have the Banjo Kazooie logo. I have no doubt that if i picked it up and played it i would enjoy it to an extent, but its just not what i was hoping for. My biggest issue is that it is so far removed from the core elements of the originals that replacing a few characters could make it a totally new IP. Its almost like they had an idea for a new game and they just used a brand people already loved as a means of boosting sales.

Thank you for this video! This was mine and my brother's childhood game, granted we didn't play N64 games but still it deserves a lot of credit: music is brilliant, artstyle still looks great and the creation system: marvellous. Some quests are annoying and frustrating, but some are also very creative and try to twist the formula. Very satisfying game to play, and it's funny how the game bought by our dad on a whim (most people got it as a starter with their 360) is a game with few hundreds of hours played and us (but mainly my brother, I ain't responsible for even 10%) creating OVER A 1000 vehicles. Also, as it were the years when Microsoft tried to dethrone Playstation here in Poland, this game has a really good Polish localization, with really witty dialogue translations and even LoG nickname getting translated as HGW, which is an acronym for a profane expression in Polish. And it wasn't all CAPS actually, so it looked regular. Interesting to note

I've always been a sucker for this game. While I would love a more proper platformer/collectathon like Kazooie and Tooie for a new game... I still think the story should continue where Nuts and Bolts left off. Think about it. Gruntilda threatened that she would create an absolutely vile game since he had access to the factory tools, and she's a canonically powerful and stubborn old hag. There's a perfect set-up for a game here. Gruntilda taking control of L.O.G.'s factory and the different levels being the different Gameworlds she's both mucked up and created herself. Banjo and Kazooie save the day and return L.O.G. to power, and he apologizes to them for calling them "Has beens" and "uninteresting". He actually recognizes them a the gaming icons they've always been.

I think the main problem of the art style are furr and featers (which unfortunately reflects on both Banjo and Kazooie). I like how the designs of some characters, like mumbo and grunty, kind of feel like some sort of action figures/toys, it represents pretty well the idea of building your own vehicles, however the fact that some just look way too "realistic" (for a lack of a better word), kind of ruins it in my opinion

I grew up with Banjo Kazooie as my favorite game. When I found Banjo Tooie in my local game shop I was so happy and fell in love with it too. Years later find Banjo Kazooie Nuts n Bolts in the store and get excited to buy it until I turn around the disk case and see horryifying things on the backside. Cars? Lackluster enemies? Nope! Few years later find that the game has a demo on Xbox Live and decide to test it just to see how bad it was. I didn't know it before but apparently I really love building vehicles and solving challanges with them. People, this game is worth a try.

Just a small correction. Stop and Swap 2 unlocked a profile pic and a couple system themes for your Xbox system. Kind of lame, but at least self contained to N&B Also for Stop and Swap 1, if you take the crates to Mumbo one by one, you can match each part to whichever item. As opposed to the regular part crates that are always purple, the S&S crates correspond to the eggs by color, and the Ice Key can be deduced through process of elimination. This is an interesting debate to me . It creates a bit of divide in the industry . Should we let developers just make whatever they want , regardless of whether it was actually what the fans wanted to play and therefore buy , even if the new entry isn't actually in line with the series and what people liked about it in the first place ? Or should we encourage developers to make what people actually want to play and buy , even if it's not what the developers actually wanted ? Each sides has its pros and cons . As I do not own an Xbox , I have not played Nuts and Bolts , so take what I say with a whole bunch of salt . The general concensus as of now seems to be that Nuts and Bolts was a good game , but not a good Banjo game . It could have been under a new character , or a side character who's getting their own game now , or anything like that , and people would have received it fine . But since it was coming out years and years after two beloved classics that people were ravenous for a sequel too - which , might | add , they were promised at the end of the second game- and it wasn't even the same GENRE as the originals , let alone the same kind of experience ? It was dead on arrival . I'm sure that Nuts and Bolts is a fine game , but I don't know why they felt like it needed to be Banjo kazooie at Rare . It does create an interesting argument to be held though, as outlined earlier.

I genuinely love this game, it might not be a 3d platformer, but it is a vehicle 3d platformer, and that's okay, playing Tears of the Kingdom recently has really reminded me how much I loved playing the game on 360 and on Rare Replay on my Xbox One. Would love a Rare Replay remastered for PC so that more people can give N&B and the many other wonderful Rare games a go. But I am glad Rare has recovered with Sea of Thieves, hoping Everwild whenever that comes out continues the trend. Would even like to see a N&B 2 now that Tears of the Kingdom has shows that adding in a vehicle mechanic isn't a bad thing (although an N&B 2 would need a lot more traditional platforming mixed in with the vehicle stuff, as I think that's where Tears of the Kingdom success lies, the vehicle stuff is 'semi' optional, but can make tasks much easier than trying to brute force without it.

When I finally played the game, I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt, but I ended up not liking how the game played-- like, how vehicles controlled, yadda yadda, I don't remember entirely. This game was awesome! I played the first two and I wasn’t disappointed at all with this one. The thing that made the first games good was how new they were at the time, if they had just made another one of those games it would not be the same. You have to forge new territory. I loved what they did with this game. Lately it seems no one knows how to make anything new, just recycled, lazy redos of old classics. Marvel movies, Disney redos and sequels to series that should have stayed finished. This game was totally new and creative. I loved trying to break the game with the physics or get to weird spots on the map or build ridiculous vehicles. It’s lame that people especially jontron crapped on this game because it wasn’t what they expected.

I think part of why Banjo fans hated the game so much is because the Hub world was sooooo great and fun to explore and cheese but that wasn't the game. The game we got was vehicles. If they just did more of the hub world, it would have been spectacular. It probably woulda had less hate if we didn't have "old B&K" gameplay juxtaposed against the new "not B&K game" within the same title.

Ive gotta say, i love banjo kazooie nuts and bolts. Its mainly from nostaligia though. Picture it, the year was 2012, youtube was awash in a sea of gaming nostalgia for the series, hating in this game. My dad bought a car from a friend and he included an xbox 360 with a couple games. Banjo kazooie and viva pinata, i loved those games and knew about banjo kazooie from the internet (yet i didnt get to REALLY play the game until i was 19 at my bfs house, cause he had rare replay and an xbone) But i played what i had and thoroughly enjoyed it, i loved making my own vehicles and just flying around and running around and hitting stuff. I didnt even really do many of the missions after the world opens up, it was my first console from that era, where i was squarely on the ps2 and wii, so it was really cool for me, and got crazy awesome when they came out with the kinect and i played it all the time with my family.

I didn't have an Xbox to be able to play Nuts & Bolts for a long time. Something that honestly I think helped me as I heard enough, and saw pieces of it, to lower my expectations and judge the game on its own merits. Not what that "Banjo is back" teaser made me imagine it would be. I really do enjoy the game. Showdown Town is nice, the personalities and humor are still there, and even the vehicle stuff is enjoyable enough. I'd say Banjoland is my favorite world in the game. Partly due to the pure nostalgia yes, but also because of the fun missions. And the world itself was a good size with good enemy placement. Though enemies in the game a pushover it's still something. Others like Nutty Acres and Logbox 720 suffer from size issues. The former being almost too big even with the vehicles even if fun otherwise. The latter being too compact and tough to move around easily at times. Which could be tough if you had to be fast for a mission. Truthfully the game probably would have been taken better had it not been eight years since Tooie. If there had been a classic styled game beforehand. A true "Banjo-Threeie" if you will would have take that harsh disappointment away. Plus that aforementioned teaser putting imaginations into overdrive.

It's not hard to see why fans didn't like Nuts and Bolts. Fans wanted a new Banjo & Kazooie game. They got one but the core gameplay is radically different, resulting in a game that looked like it was meant to be something else and Banjo & Kazooie were just thrown in to get fans to buy it. Looking at mario for comparison, there you always have new mechanics, some new gimmicks, but at it's core the mario games are always Jump and Runs (excluding spinof titles like mario cart, mario party and so on). From what I have seen you could probably remove what is left of it's jump and run roots from Nuts & Bolts and just leave the vehicles and the game probably would stay largely the same. As a result the core gameplay that fans were expecting became some gimmick attached to something different. I don't doubt the game is good, but making a sequel is always a balance act between changing enough so that fans don't think they could have just played a previous game and not changing to much so that you don't alienate the fans of the previous games. In this case they changed to much and the fans were unhappy because in their eyes they didn't get a real banjo game.

For me it is tied with BK1 as being my favorite Banjo game. You might think that building vehicles isn't your thing, but one of the things this game excells at is making that mechanic fun. Once you get past the fact that the game swaps kazooies moves for a wrench and let's you collect things like you always could, just with a different kind of moveset, there is so much to love about this game and so much of the charm, personality and of course the incredible music is done justice here and dare I say it sometimes even better than it ever had been before. Please, if you are a fan of BK, at some point just give it an honest shot, you may be very surprised and maybe, just maybe it may even become something special for you as it did for me. The truth is, player hated it because it was not Banjo ! You could have replaced every character and it would have felt more right. It also lacked the polish BK and BT received likely because they didn't really know where to go and settled on that without much conviction. Honestly sandbox concepts rarely make for good games with a classic progression system like the Banjo games. Now survival is not the only good model for sandbox games, but collectathon is definitely a very bad option I think, no matter how hard you try. Another problem Nuts'n'Bolts brings to the table is the lack of core diversity. When boiling it down, you all do all game long is create vehicles until figuring out what works for your current challenge and make it somewhat balanced. It all boils down to the vehicle creation, this is your main challenge as a player, with driving it being your reward, not your challenge. It's hard to find any way to boil down BK or BT that much without missing on core components ! 12:23 onward partly sums that up well except for the driving skills part IMO. it's more about using the vehicle you made than it is about mastering its handling and a complex set of moves. And the extra possibilities makes it less about puzzle solving and more about raw sandboxing (which again, is IMO not fit for a collectathon game). But I stand by the main argument being that it should not have been a Banjo game (and afaik was not supposed to be, they actually merged the Banjo project with another one that was the vehicle idea iirc). Egg guns could be replaced by anything because it's not a bird character throwing it anymore, Mumbo's role kinda make sense but still is a vast departure, Humba is no longer a supporting cast (afaik, never finished the game :S and the specialty blueprints I don't know, it feels like Bottles' tips, something fitting for the game that shows in the mean time how much of a departure the game is from BK/BT). The whole thing could have been something else, and it wouldn't even have been called a collectathon if BK was not slapped on the box !

I know I'm late to this but thank you for giving this game a fair shot and an honest review. As a Banjo fan I am so sick of seeing this game dragged through the dirt simply because it swapped out moves for vehicle building. It's such a shame that most people didn't seem to even give this thing a chance, because when I did I quickly discovered it was one of if not my favorite Banjo game. The music, the characters, the incredible art and graphics, the almost infinite replayability and some of the best worlds seen in a Banjo game, this one had it all and I wish it got the user reception it deserved. My only real complaints came from the vehicle building limitations and limited performance on console. I feel if this game got a modern pc port with these limitations removed in a post Minecraft world, it just may have been received a little better.. Truly a gem from an era where games weren't afraid to play it a little less safe and take risks. I really miss stuff like this.

I personally see both sides of the argument. On the one hand, Nuts and Bolts is a really good game. On the other hand, it truly doesn't really feel like a Banjo-Kazooie game.

Its a good concept. But I think it could have been better executed in a racing game of some sort. Imagine building your own custom vehicle from scratch and racing against others with their own machines. Maybe different tracks could have different environments that require different parts to traverse effectively? And the various weapons could be used as a substitute for the classic item box structure of other racers.

It wasn't the banjo kazooie game I wanted to continue the series but god damn did it become one of my favourite games on the 360!

I think Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts is the Sonic Unleashed of the Banjo franchise, both games introduced completely different mecanics to their francises (I'm not talking about the werehog, the boost was the new and strange thing), they both had redisigns and they were both criticised by people that didn't understood the games. I hope that Nuts and Bolts has the love that Sonic Unleashed has now

I grew up with this game, and I absolutely loved it. I never knew the story behind it, until recently when one of my friends brought up how it was the worst game in the series. I feel like if you want a platformer, play Crash Bandicoot (that'd make people mad lol) but this game is so charming and it should be treated as almost a separate project than the others to fully enjoy the experience

I never understood why people hated it so much. I've always liked the car building in the game. Personally, I would like to see another one with the same parts and more but as its own. I've never hated the game just the L.O.G cars and a couple of maps. I played the game so much I know all of it's glitches and exploits lol

Going from Jolly Roger to Jolly Dodger might be a censorship thing? But it could also be a reference to the British comic strip character "Roger the Dodger"
