Overdue Doctor Who Review: The Impossible Astronaut/The Day of the Moon

The Doctor is back! He's got Amy, Rory, and even River along for the right and a brand new enemy to defeat! The problem is, will any of them remember what the threat is long enough to actually do anything about it.

In a discussion about Nixon on a political page, I mentioned that he only recorded everything becuase the Doctor told him to so he would know if the Silence was influencing him. I was very disappointed that no one got it!
It's 6 months later when she eventually dies , so it's likely her death was just caused by sickness from probably being homeless for that amount of time in that environment
Personally I found it very refreshing to have the Doctor meeting a more controversial (but not outright monstrous) figure from history rather than one of the more well-remembered US Presidents. For one we avoid any excessive hero worship or gushing.

The other brilliant thing about the resolution is that there is actually a gap in the moon landing transmission. Everyone knows the famous quote “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” but that’s not actually how it goes. There’s about a second of dead air where the transmission was lost. What Armstrong actually said was “one small step for *a* man, one giant leap for mankind.” It’s actually really clever if you consider that second of dead air where the “a” was lost is in the context of the episode where the Silence footage was placed.

This episode causes my favourite classic doctor anecdote. Sylvester McCoy went to a convention where there were lots of people covered in tally marks. He’d not seen the episode and he was genuinely worried people were self harming....
10.30 The nixon thing is referred to at the end of the episode when nixon asks if he will be remembered. "Say hi to David Frost for me"
Personally, I love this story, for me it has some of the best characters moments for the 11th doctor, especially the scene in the TARDIS, River is allowed to show depth and vulnerability for a change. My only complaint is about the silence. I wish that whenever they were on the camera goes out of focus so we never get a clear view of them, the design is perfect as it suggests the characters are trying to give it a humanoid form but the body is all distorted and mishapen because the mind can't retain anything about it and therefore trys to fill the gaps.
The reason for the killing of Joy was twofold: in story terms, to scare Amy; in plot terms, to give Amy a reason for taking the Silent's photo.

One of my favorites. Totally shocked at the death of the Doctor and like you said, Moffat nailed it. And I love Mark Shepard. There’s something about that gravelly voice of his that I like. I thought it was neat that Shepard’s father (I believe he’s since passed away) played the older version of Shepard’s character.
When the girl regenerated I always thought she looked like she was starving to death. This is one of my favorite seasons, despite all the flaws! You can have a hay day with all the plot holes 😂 But it is just one of my favorite dr who story tellings and villains and Rory has some of the best lines
I believe the little girl regenerates because, when the Silence were kicked off the planet, she ran away and was living on the streets of New York and got sick somehow (she's coughing and the other guy asks if she's unwell and she says she can fix herself)

My issue with your point is that they grew simultaneously physically if she was 50 shouldn’t see either be older when she found Amy or she should not have grown at the same rate your comment sparked this observation and if there are any in universe examples where a child of galifrey (no idea on spelling) growing at a similar rate because it would be by my inferences that a timelord would have an exstended childhood and keep the majority of not all regenerations in there 20 -30 human time so wouldn’t the rates of growth be longer. Alternatively Mel may have had a human growth rate while having an extended adult life meaning that she would be an adult 59 years on as we have seen that regeneration doesn’t reduce your outward age to the point of being a child from every instance of regeneration ( that I have seen I’ve never watched classic) and Mel regenerated to look to be a similar age as before so this is confusing me. I would be happy to hear if you have counter evidence but this is what I can infuse from my reading of the above comment and personal knowledge but I may be lacking information and am willing to admit when I am wrong
She somehow got from Florida to New York before regenerating. One other thing the actor portraying the elder Canton Delaware was the real life father of the younger Canton Delaware. I thought that was cool.
I completely love your style... The flash of light blue nail polish pulls everything together for me

Appreciate the shoutout to the 70s version of Bodysnatchers. Also one of my favourites for the reasons you mentioned. I show it to as many people as I can to give them sn example of good horror.
Like many have said, she died because she was a young child wondering around a freezing cold city and therefore starved/froze to death
I didn't catch it until my second watching... In the scene that introduces the young Canton, there is a familial tension between the lead secret service agent and Canton. The removing of the drink from Canton's hand and the extra level of tension in their argument in the Oval office about the Doctor...
Can I just say I only just listened to your most recent podcast last night, and I can't believe you weren't a fan of The Ark in Space! I thought for sure you'd love that one!
I love that if you are watching River Song's episodes in order, you have to watch this two-parter four times.
So is this what Jeff Dunham's skeleton dummy is referencing when he says, "Silence! I kill you!"?
I love these episodes. I had to watch this so many times to really understand what was going on. It was so much fun and a great start to the entire season. And the ending was amazing.
Ok this is random but the nail polish you're wearing in this video is SUCH A BEAUTIFUL COLOR I LOVE IT!!!!
I think that whilst the 'you should kill us all on sight' thing was a rather clever solution, it seems rather incongruous with the Doctor's morality. By putting that piece of video there, he essentially sanctioned genocide, albeit a genocide of a set of villainous beings. It seemed disproportionate.
12:08 - She had a really bad cold
I remember not liking a lot of 11's era so it's really interesting hearing your take on some of the more famous episodes! :)
I think the little girl got pneumonia, but I don’t know where I’ve gotten that from. Would make sense though, if she’s been sleeping outside and been on her own for a while.
I liked this season and the silence, despite its/their sometimes jumbled up inconsistent nature. And of course, as always, I really liked your review. :)
A little girl, barefoot and wearing rags, walking through a wintry alleyway with pneumonia. I can't imagine how she possibly could have died. Really... catching her death is all it takes. I believe the reason for the ladies room sequence in part 1 was to establish they use humans and dispose of them. We are insignificant to them once we've done what we could for them. Character building. Re the captures and Area 51 at the start of part 2... sounds like The Doctor's quirky plan to keep Canton in good standing w/the President while moving about freely with the military watching a black cube.
After the girl escaped the astronaut suit and the Silence it looks like she's been living on the streets for the last 6 months, making her way to New York. So I'm presuming malnutrition/disease/lack of shelter is what killed her?
Season 6 never has really clicked for me. I think Moffat was trying a few too many things with this season which left it feeling a bit confused in terms of direction.
Stop, conspiracy and astronaut?!?! This is the "Ambassadors of Death".
Wasn’t super thrilled about how gung ho Eleven was about committing genocide but the rest of the episode was more or less solid. That said it was definitely a promise of greater things that the series entirely failed to deliver on.

I don’t think he was trying to commit genocide as much as he was just trying to chase the Silence off earth. If you knew humans were going to kill you all on sight, you might think about leaving the planet.
@quinnsinclair7028
4 жыл бұрын
Christina S. What do you think immediately follows the declaration “you should kill us all on sight?” I would think it would be a massive number of the Silence then being killed on sight. The Doctor would have to be incredibly naive to think that his actions would simply chase the Silence off without casualties. He gave a mandate to the entire world to murder another species any time they are seen. Sure the survivors might run in the light of that but given how deeply entrenched the Silence were in controlling earth how many of them must have died before they gave it up? Enough that it would constitute a genocide. And the doctor’s reaction when pulling that switch was “yay I won”. The Silence might be the bad guys but that is still a lot of death that is being cavalierly celebrated.
@menachemsalomon
4 жыл бұрын
The term for wiping out an alien species is xenocide, not genocide. (Coined by OSC in _Ender's Game.)_ And the Doctor has done it often enough, each time in defense of mankind, except for the Daleks which were in defense of his own kind.

Menachem Salomon But he’s never revelled in it. Eleven framed the Silence xenocide as “Look at how clever I am! This is awesome!” Previous instances have always framed the death of the species as a necessary evil and had some amount of respect. This just felt wrong in Have cavalier he was about the whole thing.
@menachemsalomon

@@quinnsinclair7028 I think the delight is in his cleverness at hoisting the Silence on their own petard, merely broadcasting their own "You should kill us all" message to the world. To be honest, Eleven's tenure is way confusing to me, with his own timeline so scrambled into itself that Is have forgotten most of the details. So I could be wrong about this.
Let’s be real Nixon isn’t any shadier than Hillary Clinton or other more relevant and current politicians that I won’t mention here by comparison, he just made the mistake of getting caught, or very nearly getting caught.
I disagree with your complaint about when the silence powers were unveiled. Because having someone suddenly have new powers in the fanalie is not s good way to write. It feels like an afterthought added for tension (unless it is established that they have an unknown power at a different point). Also time lords can choose to regenerate so it is possible that she thought that from then on being a child wouldn't be beneficial. Not a hard answer but a thoery.
These episodes had some great lines, beats, and character moments; some of the best of Smith's run.
That final scene in Bodysnatchers (sorry to go a bit off topic!)🎩
remember that she must have been wired and tubes connecting her to the suit that she may have had to rip out/and off of her when she climbed out of the suit? thats what i took her wounds for.
My question is, with the Doctor being inside the Tesselecta as it is burned on the boat, how did the machine cope with that? Did it Tesselect itself continuously down into ashes? I would think the flames would have been damaging. Does it have a force field? So many questions.

The way I would have done would have been that it wasn't petrol Canton gave, it was just a tank of water, and it wasn't fire which engulfed the Doctor - it was regeneration energy. Given how it's his last incarnation, it wouldn't have been enough for a new body, but enough to heal his wounds. Then there'd be an ongoing mystery in Series 7 - who is the unknown Doctor? Why doesn't he ever talk about him? Also, I'd have River be the companion for Series 7.
This Is My Fav Episodes / Story / Seson
Adore these two. Still stands up and is super dark and awesome. The silence is superb and such a great idea. The whole cast knock it out the park. 10 out of 10 Incidently regarding the arc I think the BBC might have mandated changes when the series was split in two. So I am not sure how much he is allowed to follow all the threads. I remember the split suddenly felt very different when it came back. Still love This series tho. Enjoying watching them all again.
If my memory is correct it's river who "confirms" that Amy missed a with what we find out later in the season so it is possible she lied to further conceal her true identity and the girl regenerated from being shot and if we put together take what we know about river from the weeping angels 2 parter from season 5 that she was already in jail for killing a man and the open plot to season 6 she was in jail for killing the doctor cause the date of her killing the doctor is said to be a fixed point in time which is April 22nd 2011

I don't think I ever noticed that the silence have actual eyes.
This is my favorite series opener. But I guess I'm biased seeing as it was my first series opener 😊
I haven't watched this in awhile so I'm almost certainly misremembering something. The plan was convoluted to be sure. I think it makes sense. They were bouncing around trying to determine how many of The Silence were hanging out on Earth like a bunch of freeloaders. Presumably they knew that eventually The Silence would catch up with them and kill them so they had Canton pretend to kill them and drag them all into the special room that was made of a material they had no right possessing which kept out prying eyes so they could enact their plan without The Silence catching wind. I think that's right.
I always assumed she was sick. From living on the streets. Kind of in the way alot of characters from historical programs get sick and die. I've actually never knew what any sickness are. Maybe flu, cholera, whooping cough or measles. Just some kind of sickness that isn't so relevant today, but killed alot throughout history

I think you forgot to add this to the overdue doctor who review playlist
I think the little girl had to regenerate cause she ripped herself out of the astronaut suit which they said was a life support system, she pulled wires out of herself.
I took it that the girl died of either pneumonia ,exhaustion or the cold as she was freezing and coughing (from my memory) so it seems like that due to you not having public health care, but I have never questioned this before so I haven’t put much thought into it
I agree, the girl died of disease or exposure; the question is, what happens to her over the next 30+ years?
Not sure if anyone mentioned it, it was ripping herself from the suit that caused the damage. Off you notice they insinuate she'd been in the suit for some time and it had been wired into her biological functions. Of course that makes no sense factoring in the caretaker at the orphanage but it's Moffat, plot holes are his thing.
Pretty sure it's shown that the little girl dies from just living on the street, she gets sick or something. Could be a little more explicit for the gravity of the implications though, I agree.
Haha well every one else said it with the starving kid Love the video and the series appreciate all the stuff and thanks
I fucking LOVE this two parter. Especially the first part...
I always assumed she died from getting TB on the streets or something.
Technically Timelords don't need to die to be able to regenerate.

Series six is still my favorite!! There was so much mystery and the fear factor.. I got hooked in by the mystery
Just last weekend I was at Vienna Comic Con and met Alex Kingston while I was dressed as River Song, as she was dressed in Day of the Moon.
As others have said She regenerated because of starvation and illness from being homeless.
I’ve never seen the moon landing footage outside of what they have in this episode so that doesn’t work so well for me lol. And there are tons of people who never even get access to the internet so how would they see it?
Funny Thing about this 2 Parter...Hehehe....The Silents made me forget I ever watched these episodes!!! And Also...My Brother marked my with Tally Marks on my Body afterwards!!!
So to all my fellow supernatural people, do we think Canton is Crowley's host before being possessed or is he Crowley in a deep undercover role?
I akways thought she was starving or dying from exposure. You forgot to mention all the little funnies between The Doctor and River. "Mrs. Robinson." "I hate you." "No you don't" 😂😂😂😂😂
I think that this two parter is probably the best the show has ever done mystery ever, even though the weird stuff at the end of the season isnt great
Tricky Dicky had "Daddy Issues" because his old man was a total prick to him and kept telling him how worthless he was. So he did whatever it took to become THE most powerful Man on Earth just to rub it in his old man's face. Nixon wasn't "...a crook." but he wasn't a vestal virgin either. He was however the first sitting President to visit Red China, he declared war on Cancer, and ended our involvement in South Vietnam before he resigned in disgrace. Remember, absolute power corrupts absolutely. It's no excuse, but it does explain.
I think you've found your 'look', this is the cutest I've seen you x
Why did Romana regenerate? not cause she died, was just bored of the skin, but yea the girl did say she was dying. perhaps she was just sick
Maybe the girl got killed by the silence and the shows didn’t show it because she didn’t remember and to make it seem like the audience doesn’t remember either and trying to do a kinda 4th wall break to where the audience is effected by it as well
Season 6 was too convoluted. But the first two parter was great. But I have not rewatched it.
SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!! It is established later down the line that Kovarian took Melody and the Doctor assumed she has been raised in the orphanage. it looks as though she had probably ran away from the orphanage after the events in the episode and been homeless a while and she looks to be no older than like 7 or 8 so a child that age could not survive long on the streets on her own so she most likely was suffering from malnutrition, dehydration, exhaustion and whatever other illnesses she has picked up along the way and also given that when we see her regenerate is six months after the main plot of the episode so its winter by then lets throw in hypothermia for good measure. the combination of those things is what killed her.
The idea of an alien that interferes with memory is great, but they also shoot lightning. Either of those is good, but both is just silly.
the girl regenerated because she thought it's fun, i think
I remember this being very confusing.
In context, when we actually find out exactly what the Silence are (which isn't until The Time of the Doctor aired, about 2 1/2 years after the 2-parter), their actions make even less sense. And the transition from the end of The Impossible Astronaut to the start of Day of the Moon was just as jarring in 2011 with a week in between them.
This is where Stephen Moffat's ADHD as a show runner really starts to take over... He gets caught up in creating these threads and stories that, for the most part, he either forgets or just finishes in a slapdash and haphazard way.
I know this has already been answered for you, but she was apparently dying of exposure and illnesses related to that... IIRC
Hiya!
Don't know why you were a fan of the conclusion. Thought 11 committing genocide so non-cholantly was very out of character
These episodes are good and I do like them, but there's one thing I don't like that nearly ruins it for me and that's the Doctor's behavior. First of all, he indirectly commits genocide in the ending. Yes, it doesn't work really, and yes it's not direct, but the sentiment is there. However, I can forgive this because A) he's not Ten, and B).... it's a story, whatever I guess. But what I can't forgive as much is that he literally uses the human race as his weapons to win. And not, like, his metaphorical weapons where they all have to make a phone call or something, actually using them to kill things. And if this was played as a controversial hard thing to do, I'd like it because it'd be a good opportunity for character development, but he just gets away with it easily and it's played off as totally fine. And I consider that very out of character and poorly thought through.
3:30 it's supposed to be jarring? There's basically no point at all to the pre-credits scene of Day of the Moon. It was just there to throw off the audience.
She regenerated because she got sick
I can rant quite happily about how Steven Moffat *&^%$!! up the Silence. They were awesome. Then, two sentences in Time of the Doctor reduced them to lame. Why? Just...why???
Maybe she regenerated because forcing herself out of the suit was too much for her
