Overdrive On/Off Differences

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This Is the difference between having overdrive On/Off.... basically overdrive keeps the car in a higher gear saving gas and keeping the rpm's low. Having it off holds the cars gears longer before upshifting and allows the car to use engine slow down more.

    Justin Belk not true u can mess up your transmission by turning off your O/D button just leave it on while racing or driving fast if u leave it off it only allows you to 40 to 45 that's it will not switch gears so you will be burning up your transmission

    no,, Overdrive is simply the top gear. The overdrive off button simply keeps the car from entering 4th or 5th gear (depending on the transmission). so at highway speeds your RPM will be higher due to the car being in a lower gear at a speed in which it normally would of been in the top gear. It will FEEL like you have more power, but you simply have more torque due to the higher rpms.

    Overdrive really serves a purpose in trucks/vans and I am not sure why it is included in these little rice burners. Overdrive gives vehicles (mine is a 4 speed) access to the FOURTH gear, and is intended for light/freeway use to the best of my knowledge. When one is towing, offroading, or going up/down steep cliffs, overdrive is meant to be disengaged and the driver is supposed to use it in THIRS gear (at least with a 4speed). Somebody chime in if this is incorrect. I have had SO many conflicting reports from both mechanics and owner manuals (both Ford and Chevy, we won't talk about Dodge/Chrysler)

    Idk for cars but for trucks the o/d button is a towing button for some if it don’t have one already. If you’re towing cut o/d off but for most of your other driving cut it on. It doesn’t necessarily make your truck or car faster just holds the revs longer and can be used for engine braking. I got an 04 F-150 and when I cut my o/d off I can feel the power and torque, it’s basically an extra gear. Say you have a 5 spd you cut overdrive off you have a 4 but with it on it has 5 gears.

    So what would happen if you didn't turn your truck's od off while towing? It must be something that you want to avoid. Maybe it's the same with cars when they're loaded and going uphill.

    nand nicarrabla it can just overheat the transmission. I had a Ford Ranger with the 3.0 v6 and 5 speed auto. I was towing a trailer and had overdrive on which is like normal driving and it ran hot. Cut overdrive off when it cooled down and kept driving where it stayed in 4th gear and it didn’t overheat. It was trying to shift into that 5th gear when it ran hot but the power wasn’t being delivered to pull the load. So it was just stressing it. Cutting overdrive off while towing is a must for me. It’s basically a tow haul mode if your truck or suv don’t have one already. Most of the time they’ll have either or. I’ve never seen a vehicle with both a overdrive on off and a tow haul mode button

    You must be talking about a lock up clutch in a torque converter which locks the engine to the transmission instead of fluid drive. It will typically lock up at speeds around 45-50 MPH, where the impeller and turbine in the torque converter are spinning at nearly the same speed.

    5th gear. That's od...hahahah unless newer cars have some new design this is or was nothing but a highway gear for lower RPM ...I have heard so many people assume it's a more power thing. It's actually the opposite. Unless something in the last 20 years changed. My maxima 93 SE had the same button. But it was kept on for use on Hiway. However the power if I need more had an actual button for that ...between sport and economy which allowed higher rpm

    O/D off forces your transmission from 4th gear to 3rd gear which is why the revs go up it's a forced downshift like flooring it and hitting the kickdown switch Like shifting in to easy gear on a bike. The button is meant for high load scenarios like steep hills or towing where the car is going too fast for 3rd gear but is under too much load to maintain 4th it will cycle back and forth it's just an easy way to shift without looking

    Overdrive is nice because it allows the engine and transmission to work at the same speed, saving you fuel. Basically, you cut power down for fuel economy. I've heard some transmissions get badly damaged when turning OD off for long periods of time, as it is designed only to be off when: 1. going up a steep hill and 2. Towing heavy loads as your engine needs more power than what is allowed when being in tune with the trans.

  • @Uejji

    @Uejji

    7 жыл бұрын

    Overdrive allows the transmission to spin faster than the engine, thus leading to the name. Before overdrive, the highest gears were usually 1:1, with the engine and transmission running at the same speed. In many (most?) automatic transmissions, the highest non-overdrive gear is 1:1, with the engine and transmission running at the same speed. For example, Gear 3 in GM's 4L60E and Gear 6 in the newer ZF 8HP. So, turning O/D *off* will let your engine and transmission work at the same speed.

  • @zephiel123

    @zephiel123

    Uejji I heard it was called Overdrive because it acted like an extra gear...when in reality, it was just the transmission matching the speed of the engine resulting in a smoother ride, plus less hard work for both.

  • @Uejji

    @Uejji

    7 жыл бұрын

    I'm sorry, but you're incorrect. What you're describing is known as direct drive and is actually the *simplest* type of mechanical linkage, requiring only a direct connection between input and output shafts with no gearing at all. An overdriving mechanism is one wherein the output shaft is *drive* n at a speed *over* that of the input shaft. In cars, the first overdrive units were mounted to the rear of the transmission in front of the driveshaft and were engaged separately (basically a second transmission where the first gear was direct drive and the second gear was overdrive). Since about the 1970s, overdrive has been incorporated as a final gear within transmissions as gears higher than direct drive because it allows better fuel economy (the engine doesn't have to work as hard to drive the driveshaft at the same rate, thus lowering engine RPM and fuel consumption for the same highway speed).

  • @zephiel123

    @zephiel123

    7 жыл бұрын

    Uejji Huh.I always thought Overdrive was the Torque Converter locking the trans and engine together...like coupling, which is why you got better fuel economy, because it lowered engine RPM since their speed was basically 1:1. I know in earlier transmissions it was a separate box

  • @Uejji

    @Uejji

    7 жыл бұрын

    The torque converter goes between the engine and transmission in automobiles without a clutch and allows the engine crankshaft and transmission input shaft to operate at differing (though converging, by the action of the torque converter) speeds. Many automatic transmissions have lock-up torque converters which establish a direct connection between crankshaft and input shaft, but this is only engaged at high vehicle speeds, when the benefits of the torque converter are no longer as important, thus eliminating the power losses through the torque converter in those situations. This is mechanically unrelated to overdrive but will typically operate (if equipped) in the same conditions that overdrive does.

    @Its_keion I have seen Acuras with D5, D4, D3, 2, and 1...specifically those 2002 and later models. Older models were usually four speed, but I have never driven one of those. I actually prefer that cars have a sport manual mode, equipped on an automatic. The way I drive a six speed Ford Escape is similar to leaving the car on six speed drive all the time, except that with sport manual, I have the option of holding lower gears at key moments when I do not want the car to keep auto downshifting all the time, trying to hold higher gears. If you are using sport manual mode and your car automatically downshifts, it is basically telling you that you are going too slow for that higher gear and it will pick up some RPM's as a fail proof feature, so your car does not stall. When driving in heavy traffic, I will often let the car auto downshift and refuse to upshift, so I can save wear and tear on the transmassion. That extra wear and tear on the transmission will happen if you do city driving at around 40 MPH with overdrive on and the car keeps shifting between the top two gears. If that happens in your car, that may be a reason why you would prefer turning your overdrive off to reduce that over shifting.

    Many owner's manuals will tell you when below 30 mph to turn the O/D off, so the transmission doesn't work as hard. Overdrive at low speed can lug the engine, so if you want to accelerate a little bit the transmission is going to have to shift down, and then back up into overdive once done accelerating. I'll typically keep it off if I'm starting from a red and I know I'm gonna have to stop again soon enough, just so it doesn't go into overdrive when I don't need it.

    You would only want to turn overdrive on AFTER you've reached cruising speed. Overdrive is designed to save fuel. Once you've reached 55mph or more, and you're not accelerating any more, engage overdrive. When you need to decelerate turn overdrive off and you will decelerate faster. Overdrive is basically 5th gear for automatics. If you engage overdrive while accelerating you're putting the car in too high of a gear and putting a much greater load on the engine. It will accelerate slower in overdrive. Use it only for cruising (consistent speed) to save fuel. Most Transmission Control Modules (computers) will know to control overdrive and not allow it to engage too early, but some automatics are pretty stupid.

    The OD button accomplishes the exact same thing as shifting between D and 3 manually just without looking or risking a shift into 2 it's meant for shifting without looking in highspeed high load situations like steep hills or towing when the car is going fast enough to be in top gear (OD) but under too much load to maintain it and it will begin cycling between 3 and OD the OD button quickly keeps it in 3 it just uses more fuel because of the gear ratio and subsequent rev increase

    The real question is why have an Overdrive button!? Why should we have to decide how to shift the Top Gear on an "Automatic"!? My M3 had 5 gears that it shifted completely on its OWN 5 GEARS seamlessly as needed without a stupid button to be concerned with!!!

  • @juansolo1617

    @juansolo1617

    Because the automatic transmission is controlled by a computer, and it has no idea what's going on with the road. It controls the gears based on throttle position and load sensors. You would only want top gear when cruising. Never when accelerating. It's only useful on the highway during prolonged cruising. You will decelerate slower in overdrive, meaning you could coast farther and possibly rear-end someone else. You will decelerate faster in a lower gear just from the engine spinning down.

  • @juansolo1617

    Driving in OD all the time would waste gas and put extra stress on the engine. It's like riding a bike in a higher gear than necessary, it requires extra leg strength to pedal. Using a lower gear while accelerating puts less stress on the engine and uses less gas. You'd only want overdrive when cruising at a steady speed.
