A British officer earlier in the film had prayed that God grant them victory before the Americans arrived. The "Over There" song supplied what you thought would be the first traditional war film upbeat moment. Until you heard that last line.

They changed the lyrics of the last line of the song in keeping with the theme of the movie. The last line of the song was changed from "And we won't come back 'till it's over, over there" to "And we won't come back, we'll be buried over there."

Has anyone ever verified that these lyrics are a legitimate AEF rewrite of Cohan? Given that the film prided itself on using actual BEF lyrics for the British songs I'd assume so, but have never seen it confirmed.

The lyrics used in the film were those sung by the troops at the front rather than in the music halls of New York or indeed London.Like all of their peers of other nations, it didn't take long for the wits among the Dough Boys to rewrite patriotic lyrics once they'd experienced their first few weeks in the trenches. Hence the last two lines changing from the patriotic and uplifting "Til it's over over there" to the more sardonic "We'll be buried over there"

I mean, to be fair, they kinda did. It’s often debated by just how much America’s entry into WW1 changed the war’s outcome, but many historians agree that their entry shortened the war by a good year. Yes, many lives were lost even with the Americans now in the war. However, their entry probably spared many lives from the meat grinder by ending the war as soon as it did.
