Over the Devon Banks with The Great Britain V & The Cornishman
Saturday 28th April, a day when three locos took two trains from Bristol over the Devon Banks.
First up were 34067 Tangmere and 70013 Oliver Cromwell with the Great Britain V, a one-way journey from Bristol to Penzance on the eighth day of this annual round Britain railtour.
Leaving Bristol some two and a half hours later would be 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe with The Cornishman, although the train had started from Tyseley.
Having travelled the 140+ miles from home, we arrived at Beam Bridge with just minutes to spare before 34067 and 70013 appeared round the curve, laying down a smokescreen that hid most of the train.
While both locos took water at the site of Tiverton Junction station, we moved on to the site of Silverton station, where the rails of the siding to the paper mills are still in situ. With another exhaust-laden runpast 34067, 70013 and the Great Britain disappeared off towards Penzance, leaving us to return to Whiteball and await 5043 and The Cornishman.
Using two cameras doubled the coverage of the Castle climbing towards the tunnel, and we used the same setup at Dainton, one camera by the roadside at Whiddon and the other in the field near the top of the bank.
For the return of 5043, we planned to set up either side of Langstone Rock, but as I reached the sea wall, with over ten minutes to spare, the Earl was emerging from Kennaway Tunnel and I had to slap the tripod down in a less than perfect position and couldn't pan round. This is why the coverage looks slightly odd.
Moving beyond the Exeter water stop, we went to Burlescombe and joined the throng on the bridge to await the sight and sound of a Castle attacking the western side of Whiteball. It was strange then, that no one heard the train coming until the last moment and I'm sure I'm not the only one who was late starting the recording.

Absolute perfection from the both of you Martyn, Tangmere creating it's own weather system, and the Earl in a class of its own.....another 10/10 Gem....Bob
Thank you very much. New fans are always welcome here and I hope you continue to enjoy my work.
Another 5* video Martyn, showing all locos at their best, not least the Earl storming up every gradient like only the Earl can. Well done.
Magnificent shot of 5043 at Whiteball. Lucky with the Voyager on the return journey as well.
Hi Martyn: your luck continues with passing trains, both of these timed to the split second!! Excellent filming as ever. Alan
Superb! You have just found a new fan. Great planning and skill. Thanks, most enjoyable.
Great video all in all, Whiteball and then the shot with the HST were my favourites! Well executed shots, thumbs up from me.
Super filming with a nice mix of modern traction. Very good. I filmed the Earl passing Southall the following day. Barry
That's absolutely superb coverage. Thanks.
A great result Martyn, a lot of rushing around but well worth it. I was in Exeter getting the 'slower shot's' but 5043 nearly caught Me out running 10 up on the return into St David's. My camera was still in the bag as I came onto the platform and there she was just running in.... never moved so quick in my life!! :-)
cracking good video mate, not often one gets a chance to chase three locos about, I guess you enjoyed getting the shots as much as I enjoyed watching the resulting fast and furious results, fantastic, cheers.
Don't be so self critical Martyn, the 10/10 was for achieving such superb work in very difficult conditions.....That's not any easy thing to achieve, so I stand by my marks.....10/10....Bob
Luck it certainly is and not planned. I don't always get away with it and often include the shots just to show how bad it can go. Thanks as always Alan.
Excellent set of shots from the day Martyn, good use of the two camera setup, thumbs up. I even spotted myself at Whiteball & Dainton.
Thank you very much and I hope you continue to enjoy my work.
Outstanding. Really enjoyed from start to finish. 5*
Thanks very much. It wasn't supposed to be fast and furious but the day began to unravel towards the end. Still it was enjoyable to film and i'm glad you liked it.
Thanks Alan much appreciated.
Thank you moose,most kind.
Thanks very much. It certainly was a powerful performance only spoilt by the odd spot of rain on the lens.
Brilliant video,some masterful clips.enjoyed
Thanks Kristian. It's good to have two cameras again as it allows some variation. It doubles our output for no extra travel. I'm also glad you managed to have a cameo role in this production.
The shot that you mention was supposed to be smoother than that. the plan was to stand further apart but I got caught out by the train being early. Still never mind and i'm glad you enjoyed it.
nice job loved this bit 4:46 where you change view great job
Thanks very much and i'll certainly give your video a look.
It's always a pleasure to head South West Ryan. I don't need to look closely at the penultimate clip mate as I have a big close up of you that didn't get used. Judging by your outfit I thought you wanted to remain unseen. Saw you at Dainton earlier as well.
Thanks for your rating. I've seen many locos attacking these gradients but for me the Castle will always be my favourite. Glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for your support as always.
That concrete track looks like a bit of the old Brunel 7 ft gauge, but the Earl certainly put on a grand performance, well done on the camera
Thanks Barry i'm glad you enjoyed it. I'd have liked to go out the next day too but was unable to.
A superb video, thanks for sharing, It's a like from me, and added to my favourites, Cheers...Bill
Another hard trek to the south west, but still defying the elements with nature. It was quite an event for all concerned no doubt. Catching some highlights of the day. Look closely at the penultimate clip at the end and you can see a recognisable figure on the hillside
Thanks for the rating i'm glad you enjoyed it.
Judging by Tangmere as she comes round the bend, Teas up!
Thanks for the rating i'm glad you liked it.
Fantastic footage, some really super shot of 34067&70013 especially the first. Managed to film days 1/2, have a look if you have time.
Excellent videos. I hope to get this quality eventually!
Nothing odd was noted - it was great all through. . . . . Alan
Damn, I think they must have been feeding Tangmere beans!
Great stuff! Where's that track set in concrete?
Kept the best untill last!! The Earl
Martyn - I have to say that I enjoy your videos a lot and this was full of shots that were really really good! Steam engine mathematics 5043 = 34067+70013! While 5043 x (34067+70013) = x|x 34067= ☁☁☁☁☁ ……Hᴜɢʜ……TU....ツ
Go get a Castle or a King and do the Job properly, only Joking great video
Thanks Bob but this wasn't perfection. Rain on the lens, an early return, and one of the loudest engines sneaking up unheard on a whole bridge full of people made for an indifferent day. Still we love it and here's to the next one. Cheers again but it's not worth a 10.
