"Over Hill Over Dale" TUTORIAL | Fairy Monologue (A Midsummer Night's Dream)

Join me as I explain one of my favorite speeches from A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare! This piece is a lovely teenage monologue for a female or male identifying actor looking to show physicality, energy, imagination, and confidence.
Easy to understand and fun to watch-eth 😎

✨ MONOLOGUE TEXT
Fairy in A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare
"Over hill, over dale" (Act 2, Scene 1)
PUCK
How now, spirit! Whither wander you?
FAIRY
Over hill, over dale,
Thorough bush, thorough brier,
Over park, over pale,
Thorough flood, thorough fire,
I do wander everywhere,
Swifter than the moon's sphere;
And I serve the fairy queen,
To dew her orbs upon the green.
The cowslips tall her pensioners be:
In their gold coats spots you see;
Those be rubies, fairy favours,
In those freckles live their savours:
I must go seek some dewdrops here
And hang a pearl in every cowslip's ear.
Farewell, thou lob of spirits; I'll be gone:
Our queen and all her elves come here anon.

    I'm helping my daughter prepare for this monologue. So helpful, thank you! She did mention that the fairy might have killed someone for the Queen before this speech. I thought that was the freckles / rubies ... Now I'm wondering where she got that interpretation.

    So glad this was helpful! 🥰👏 WOW yep… never heard that interpretation, haha. It could have been the choice of a particular production to have the fairies and the forest be super dark? Definitely an interesting character choice to have a fairy drip blood into flowers! But no, there’s nothing specifically in the text about that. I just checked the Variorum (a very fancy book that I can confirm Shakespeare inquires with) and it only mentions that these “spots” are also mentioned in Cymbeline: “like the crimson drops i’ th’ bottom of a cowslip.” So yes… ‘Tis just the flower’s design 🙂 Thank you for watching and commenting! And best of luck to your daughter performing this fun monologue! 💖🧚🏼‍♀️✨
