This was the first computer I had as a kid. I learned how to program in BASIC on it. It had the BASIC language built in and came with a pretty good instruction manual on programming. I think we got it around 1983 or 1984. I would get computer magazines that had pre-written programs like games that I would type in. It literally had a cassette deck that I would use to save the programs onto cassettes instead of floppy disks. Good times.

Ditto - the tapes seemed to work better than on the later Commodores which often failed after 20 minutes of loading - oh well, start over!

Daium man, same here. This was my first computer, learned basic and from that moment on it was a no return journey. Nowadays I am a cybersecurity pro thanks to this.

I had one of these as a kid, and to this day I have fond memories of "Hunt the Wumpus"

“Hunt the Wampus” was a game we had growing up, but I never figured out how to play it.

I had one as well. Got it for Christmas. It was a gift for my brother and I. But they took it back about a week or two later because we kept fighting over who was going to play. ..😂😂😂

The TI computer was perfect timing and price for my generation. Lots of people had them, first time I learned any type of programming. I didn’t have many games but I remember Car wars.was cool to see that again.

Not the perfect price, damn thing was over a $1'000 bucks but my mom worked at TI and got a discount

Takes me back, I had a few games published back in the day, only made pennies but it was fun at the time. Highlights included Parsec but BurgerTime I remember well and CarWars, Tombstone City was also brilliant! I had Extended Basic and the Speech Synth too. Happy Days!

My first gaming console. My friends had Atari 2600, Atari 800, Colecovision, Commodore 64, and wanted to come to my house to play video games. Although a limited library compared to others it had some really good arcade ports and classics of its own. Plus the speech synthesizer and graphics and colors being top notch. The TI994a port of Microsurgeon was one of the best looking and advanced games in its day. Parsec was cooler than just about anything, Alpiner silly fun, Much-Man and TI Invaders really good clones of arcade classics. Had the arcade ports of Donkey Kong, Burgertime, and Congo Bongo.

The TI99 is definitely an underrated system.

If the TI99/4A had at least 512KB of RAM it might have been able to have been a business machine and beat IBM to it.

I'm actually impressed with what the TI99 could do.

Memories! I loved Alpine!

Parsec was sooo far ahead of its time... Not even Beyond Parsec compared to it, I love playing it to this day. Its up there with Doom2

Ti 99 had my favorite Burger Time port!! TI Invaders is also my fave Space Invaders port.........Hell, I like it better than the original!! 😃

I have a 4/a. Parsec is probably my favorite. That Dragons lair port has to be pricey now.

I did a LOT of Extended Basic programming back then and I can clearly see the graphics limitations in this games.

So, I guess a couple things here. First, it's amazing how so much of the sounds and graphics here are IDENTICAL to the Intellivision. In many cases, if you put them side by side, I think most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference. The other thing is.....flappy bird was a TI99/4a game? lol, what? The most hated downloadable phone game ever originated decades ago...I had no idea.

I think you mean ColecoVision, because that has the exact same TMS graphics chip.

Also Flappy Bird is a modern homebrew, it didn't originate on the TI99. That said it wasn't an original game in the first place anyway, being a rip-off of early PC games like Chopper and Superfly.

I do own both moon patrol,ti invaders and donkeykong from those top 60 games😁

Awesome ot see several of my games in this video. Those were good times programming those games. Beyond Parsec, Hopper, Moon Mine. Does anyone know that Hopper was originally intended for the newly released Mini Memory cartridge? When it was shown to TI management, they loved the game so much they asked me and my partner, Mike Archuleta to add more to it and make it cartridge ready.

IT is VERY playable. There are a few playthru videos of it here on KZread. And the packaging was nearly as exciting as the game (more so if you're not a fan of laserdisc games). Harmlesslion dedicated a chunk of his life to bringing to the TI, taking on a project that many would have claimed was impossible. And although it takes advantage of an F18A GPU upgrade it runs perfectly in a stock TI with 32k.

I remember a chomper game and can't find any footage of it. I think it was jawbreaker II

Do you need the speech add on for the talking in games?

The fun of ZeroZap was making the playfield for another player. Otherwise there was very little player interaction. Notably missing gems: 1. Jumpman Jr (the original disk version with the Epyx level still intact and full level tunes, not the Cartridge "Junkman Jr". Best platformer of the 80's and the 4A variant is GREAT (despite a small bug on Level 2). 2. The brilliant games of DSAPCS like Tex Turbo, Mad Marvin and Neverlander (community squabbles should not see us ignore his stellar contribution to modern TI games) 3. The still in progress Legend of Tilda which looks like it will become a very impressive legend of Zelda clone 4. The F18 only games such as Zaxxon, Super Mario Bros and Alex Kidd (the latter getting far too little attention for it's accuracy and scope). But I do get excluding these since they require a system upgrade to run. But I'm just bitching as I do...your collection is very comprehensive and shows the full gamut of TI gaming. Well done as always.

@@ericbryant-dz8mj Jumpman was released for the major 8-bit computers, buit had run its course by the time the NES rolled in. Too bad it truly is one of the great platform games ever written...right up there with Lode Runner. The games of DSAPSC are modern (well modern for 10-15 years ago) homebrews exclusive to the TI-99, and are a small group of games that I consider some of the best on the system.) Being fairly recent releases over the 40 year TI life, not surprised you wouldn't have heard of them. Google DSAPSC to visit his site. He also released TI hardware and software that allows the TI to play C64 SID files, giving access to one of the biggest chiptune libraries available. And if you went over to nintendo, surely you've heard of Super Mario Bros !? ;)

Man, I remember playing a game on the TI 99 that was similar to the Star Trek one but the star field was white. Anyone know what game I’m talking about? It was all first person POV shooter.

An combination of some amazing ports, and some down right awfuo looking rip offs. I remember playing Parsec as a kid and a dungeon crawler not shown here on the TI

I had Parsec too, but remember it being a really hard shooter. Had Demon Attack too which was great, even though it was so different from the 2600 version. I assume the dungeon game you are talking about was Tunnels of Doom. Me and some high school friends stayed up way too long too many nights playing that game! Had lots of fun. I didn't really have many games for my TI. My 2600 was for games and my TI was for learning BASIC(I had the extended BASIC cart) and would type in all the programs in Compute and '99er magazines.

Unimpressed by the quality of games, probably about 5 decent games on the system. Dragons lair although was impressive looked like it was using a greatly expanded system. Out of the machines of the time Apple , TRS 80, and Atari were dealt much better games imo.

Wow. What a bunch of boring, ugly games.

KC Munchkin, Parsec, World at war, and M.U.L.E. loved the console even though it would get really hot, and i mean hot!!!

Odyssey 2?? I never even heard of that system and I had them all
