I do want to say this is an amazing video for one of my favorite games, but i did want to chime in on what is the most complained about thing in this game that you yourself also discussed and further explained; "alot of mechanics in this game aren't explained through tutorials" ...there is literally a tab from the menu, called "tutorial", that is even doable with split screen co-op. it teaches the basics of movement, combat, crafting, magic, temperature, buffs and debuffs, weaknesses and resistances, traps, weight, skills, and maybe other things I'm forgetting. after that, everything else you can learn is told to you by npcs or notes, play this like morrowind, read your map, your journal, and what the people are saying. like Tonesville said here, you are literally meant to experiment and get lost in the world. have fun!

It's hard to get lost in the world when the world feels so empty. I've tried so many times to get into Outward but it's just so boring. The combat is trash, the world is empty, the enemy ai is trash and traveling around the world feels so tedious. It has some good ideas, but they're poorly executed

My hero, was gonna be writing all of this. Like, there is a ton and a spoonful of useful advice starting town NPCs have if you ask, you even is lightly directed to ask around in the inn and around the town for work and whatnot and yet it's seldom that people check the inn or speak to anyone...

@@bloodgazm8891 Filling the world with enemies and things to collect, loot, explore, and discover every 100 meters is a terrible alternative. It's unrealistic and it makes the entire world unbelievable, not to mention it makes the entire game an even bigger slog with Outward's mechanics taken into consideration. I like Outward because there _are_ things to do and explore, yet it feels so hidden and natural that when you find it without using a wiki, it feels so cool, like you uncovered a long lost secret the game was hiding. Even the environmental storytelling of the Royal Manticore's location was insanely cool to me, and I only noticed it because I wasn't overstimulated by the world. So many people don't even know there are big boss fights and dungeons in the game. Combat is stiff but it makes it feel so tense and actually dangerous. The enemy AI however is something I have to agree with, traps are so abusable and sneaking past them is too easy, but mods do fix that Could their ideas be executed better? Sure, but remember this was made by an unknown dev team of 8-10 people where they had little budget

@ascended8174 I agree with everything you said. I didn't pick up outward at first playthrough cause I thought it was boring and unpolished. After watching some videos I gave it a second try, and I'm really liking the gameplay. The biggest things I take from it are the SEVERE difficulty curve with learning 90% of things by youself (crafting, builds, etc) and making it into something not perfect, but fun and magical)

@@IRETROGAMER558I Yeah, but people don't usually like being challenged with what they've known for so long, i.e. streamlined RPGs of today. Nothing wrong with them of course, but Outward just captures a true immersive experience that I've never seen replicated before. Even Baldur's Gate 3 still made me feel like it was a game, not an experience

I had this game sitting on my wishlist for YEARS, until last year when I bought it on sale. I had only played for a few hours before I convinced one of my best friends to join me. Oh, the adventures we have had. Tired, sore, and battered from our journeys on the road, we stumbled into a a large fortress, hoping to get out of the cold. We were greeted by a friendly guard, who offered us a wam place to stay for the night, as well as food. We happily accepted, grateful that our luck had turned. Or so we thought. Instead, when we awoke, we had been stripped of our arms and armor, and found ourselves deep below the ground, imprisoned in a labor camp. My friend and I began plotting our escape. We were not going to work our way out, no, we were far too spiteful to comply. Days we spent gathering enough food and suitable weapons until we could make our move. When the time came, we earned enough trust for the guards to allow us beyond our initial prison area, and accept more duties around their fort. From there, we ambushed one of our captors and divided her armor between us, as we broke into the armory. Grabbing our supplies, the battle for our freedom began. My friend, the stalwart mace and shield, held back the masses as I, the wizard, sent plumes of fire over his shoulder, driving our adversaries back as we fought our way up and out of the castle. All was going well until we ran into who could only be described as our captor's leader. Weilding an imposing two-handed sword, he set upon us slashing and stabbing, as our already damaged health bars were beginning to break. I fell, as my friend continued to defy death and block each incoming blow. But we knew he wouldn't last forever. In a last ditch attempt to save our lives, my friend kicked back our opponent, staggering him, as he rushed forward to get me back on my feet. Once I was up, we knew this was our chance! With another well timed kick, he sent the villain stumbling backwards, right into a wall of flames I sent forth his way. Our captor's flesh broiled as he fell to the ground, dead. We quickly took everything we could carry, and escaped with our freedom, and our lives. This is just one of the many, many, maaaannnyyy stories this game has given my friend and I. And I couldn't love it more. If you're on the fence about this game, stop waiting. Grab a friend and go for it, you will NOT regret it!

Best part about that quest is that there are multiple ways to escape. Bribe your way out by working and you get your gear back, you can also do a classic prison escape by going thru the 'sewers' aka a giant black pit but you'll lose the chance to get your gear back, or you can fight your way out like your explained which rewards the player with unique loot IF you manage to win lol. Alternatively if you leave the prison or don't ever encounter them, you get a quest much later which ends up turning into a mini faction war in the region with additional side quests that reward even more unique gear. This game is insane 😅

This game is such a hidden gem. I remember I bought the game on launch and played it with my brother. It is one of the VERY few RPG games that actually has split-screen. Sure, the combat is sometimes unforgiving, but every battle won, every adventure started, and every treasure found makes it so worth it, as if you surpassed a struggle and feel the relief in you. I love this game so much, I made 2 sperate characters. My first was a Runic War Mage, my Second character was a Gunslinging Merc. And my Current character...is a Skeleton! Yes, there is a way to play as a skeleton! And it's awesome...and dangerous lol.

I remember picking up Outward for some reason a year or two ago, binged like 70 hours straight, and for my attention span, thats incredible, I knew absolutely nothing about the game, so everything really did feel like a fresh adventure, I remember being absolutely astonished when I got knocked out and forced to work as a slave In the mines, then cobbling together a complicated scheme to escape my way to freedom, finding my chest full of stuff was such a relief, had no clue If It was just gone. The game Is full of stuff like that, I bet It's been updated to hell and back since I played too, It's absolutely worth your time, go Into It blind and look up some stuff If you want some direction, all I knew was that there was a way to learn runes, and where I should go to get the runes, and that journey was a whole LoTR's trilogy's worth of fun.

It's rare that I come into the conversation of fiction that has a genuinely good god or deity, but after going through the Monsoon faction quests I can wholeheartedly say that Elatt has been the best. He makes it clear that his abilities are limited and that while he has power, he is not all powerful. Nor is he all knowing, he makes mistakes but also owns up to them. He's really just a guy who became a god, shouldering that burden without losing the characteristics that make him human. It's so damn cool to see a trope be subverted like that in such an interesting and ultimately wholesome way. If nothing else, Outward can own that. But there's so much else to love, and I can only write so much in one comment. Thank you for such an entertaining video!

Come to think of it, i haven't touched it in 2023 yet... here we go again! If anyone's about to give this game a shot because of this (awesome!) review: i would highly recommend _not_ looking anything up beforehand. My favorite game. I can chill out in the world, think up challenging tasks for myself, be weak, be powerful, seek out an item I've never had before or just follow a questline. Oh yeah, and the music is the best I've ever heard in a game.

Something i always noticed about the more "mainstream" rpgs (like Skyrim, Fallout, etc) is that they're all centered around you, the player. You're the chosen one, the one who changes the status quo or takes charge in a changing world. You're an outside element, for the lack of a better word. No amount of mods will change the fact that *someday* you'll have to travel to Helgen to start the main quest. Because these games simply weren't *meant* to be played as a nobody, so the content for that playstyle is rather small. A game like Outward, in the Fallout or Skyrim engines would be amazing.

I am so happy the algorihm showed me this video. This seems like 100000% my jam, I am definitely buying it when I`m able. The exploration in the modern games is very surface-level, and I would love to have more games with distinct world designs (and smaller map) without the markers. Also the magic system looks very appealing to me. The video itself is great! I really like your narration, and the gags got were funny) Thank you for covering the game!

make sure you get the Definitive Edition. it not only includes the 2 dlcs, but works the mechanics introduced in those dlcs into the main game areas, and introduces special mini bosses in areas with special crafting materials, among other small changes. if on console, it’s only on ps5 and series x tho, not last gen, but it’s worth it if you have either console.

The part where you went over your spell blade build had me sold, then when you talked about the defeat scenarios I literally boot up steam and installed it. I remember in Elden Ring, at the bottom of Raya Lucaria you can get swallowed by one of the iron maidens and it sends you to the Volcanic Manor. That was such an amazing experience that immersed me so much into the world of Elden Ring, I can't wait to see what I find in Outward!

I have this game so long on my wishlist, but never was sure about buying it because some of the complaints (mostly combat). But my god... this video makes me wanna play it... like right now. Plus, this is a damn fine video, and normally, I don't watch random creators bacause some can be really obnoxious and I'm happy with the few I watch.... but yeah, I'm glad I clicked on this video!

The depth of the combat makes up for the slight clunk it has, and you get used to that pretty fast anyway. The game is an absolute gem

I'm enjoying this video more than I did the game. I'll admit I'm not really into survival and therefore I hated some mechanics. Instead of focusing exclusively on buffing players for eating, sleeping, drinking, etc, the game punishes you for going out for "too long" by reducing your health pool until you rest. The solution is camping, but only a few spots are safe from being ambushed. Another problem I found was world traversal. It's simply not fun, given how empty it is for the most part, combined with the afore mentioned mechanic that forces players into camping so they have their full health bar. The solution I found was to min max speed and stamina buffing skills and items, so I sped through the map as if I was the flash. I believe this could be fixed by increasing the time it takes for your health and other stats to start decaying. You might have fun playing the game, specially with a friend(s) (I think there's a mod to increase the cap). But when I Harken back to my own experience playing with a friend, the majority of it was me speeding through the map with my 50% + speed buff while he was disconnected, and then he connects into my game when I reach an Interest point.

@Mike araujo Mixing water with the gravel beatles you find in the game at a cooking station will make a tea that restores a huge chunk of your burnt health in early game. Stat burn is an annoyance in early game, but it becomes less obtrusive as you collect the various passive skills. One of the DLC breakthrough perks removes stat burn almost entirely, so you could try running that in your build if you ever plan on picking the game back up. Hope this helped, and thank you!

I was in that same situation. Oh this game looked good. Oh I could play with friends. Mixed Reviews? Meh. Then i just took the dive and man, was it the best few years of my life when gaming was at a lull. You learn the love the jankiness, dying because you got too thirsty, and just being mobbed to death my a shrimp. Its the ONLY game that I consistently follow on their discord, hoping to hear more from the company that made it

@@mikearaujo377 Interestingly enough i had the opposite effect. I was playing with a friend and we kept dying and picking each other up. We had like 20% health max the whole time and was struggling. They adventure became us living like savages trying to find enough mushrooms to bring our health back up while we made it back to town. The real adventure was the struggles we made along the way

Great video! Really enjoyed this style of game critic/review/analysis, to me it feels semi professional but at the same time personal which I find extremely interesting. I have this game but it is in my back log I got it on sale and got the definitive edition, now I just need to commit to spending near 100 hours to one game which I will do eventually. Thanks for the entertainment I just subscribed and am going to check the rest of your work. 👍😊

I haven't played this since it came out. I should give it another go and see what has changed. I just loved that whole 'put a backpack on and your journey from A to B shall be epic'. Its just that doing that repeatedly back and forth got a bit stale. But I did love the enemy difficulty even with using guides to get a headstart.
