Outstanding natives for October Gardens

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

When properly planned, the autumn garden will provide food and habitat for hungry insects and birds when many gardens have gone to sleep. See native plants in action in the fall garden as they provide food for pollinators and birds and attractive color for the landscape. Your garden can be both beautiful and a wildlife sanctuary that helps living things as they prepare for winter. See native plants that bloom in October as well as others that offer fall color while creating a healthy ecosystem.

Thanks for permission to keep my garden “undone” in the fall. :-)

I'd would say blueberry is another with 3 seasons of interest. Flowers in spring, delicious berries and summer, and waxy vivid red leaves in the fall

Last fall was first time I did not clean yard. It was so delightful to see the birds eating the seeds off the plants in winter. I’m sure the other native wildlife I couldn’t see enjoyed too. So glad I followed your advice cause it was entertaining for me and beneficial to wildlife.

Leave the leaves and you’ll see even more. White-throated Sparrows will kick up the leaves to find all the insects. It’s great!

I did the same thing for the first time ever. Still mostly crows but I feel better anyway.

It is fun to watch the birds and you make a great point, who knows what other wildlife we don't see is also benefitting from leaving the plants.

Thanks for the video! It's great to see other people excited about helping pollinators. We're in the 2nd year of our native pollinator garden, and will be growing a lot of goldenrod from seed this year in NC. We left last year's plants untouched through the Winter, too.

That's great that you started a native garden! Goldenrods are very important plants for insects!

I can’t tell you how excited I got when I saw your new post. I love your channel! I’ve started Pearly Everlasting from seed and now I have dozens of plants. Can’t wait!

Thank you! I give you credit for growing it from seed. The seeds are very small and not that easy to grow.

March is the new October. LOL I dream of the day when people have a field of goldenrod rather than a lawn.

At what point in the Spring do you remove all the native plants stems, etc.?

She has a video on that, one of her earlier ones. Here in nj, I wait as long as possible usually when it starts getting hot.

There is no magic answer as according to Dr, Doug Tallamy , insects continue to emerge well into the summer. I'm in northern NJ and wait until mid-May, assuming the daytime temperatures are staying in the mid 50s. When I cut back, I leave the stems about 6 inches high. The new growth will soon cover them. The stems removed go in a brush pile.

Thank you! Look for native plant nurseries near you. Check your state's native plant society, their website will usually list native plant nurseries.
