The final centerline starting at 6:55 is just ... Wow. That passage was about as good as it gets. Super smooth transition into the piaffe and back.

Dalera was taught and trained extremely well with classic dressage pre-Totilas-era in mind. Maybe less expressive big movements, but effortless and with harmony we see very rarely today. Dressage is not meant to be spectacular. It's meant to represent the harmony between human and horse. It's not supposed to look big, but it's supposed to look easy. Jessica von Bredow-Werndl and Dalera represent these classic goals of dressage the best right now. I know the face off between the world champion Glamourdale and the Olympic Champion Dalera has been hyped beforehand, but seeing both horses right after one another shows very clearly the differences and why Dalera is still the ruling queen. Glamourdale is an amazing horse under an amazing rider, but Jessica and Dalera are still a nose ahead. I'm very much looking forward to tomorrow. Dalera seems to be on fire this weekend.

The mare is incorrect in many ways but manages to be regular and get high marks so everyone is happy. Her piaffe became little better over time but still her front legs are far under her. Big risk for navicular changes. Overwhelming that judges score that piaffe so high.

Why did this win when the horse’s tail is constantly swishing angrily (except in the extended walk, interestingly, when the rider had a loose contact and wasn’t using her spurs) and is clearly uncomfortable in the mouth?! This is terrible. Seven judges marking the test and none of them thought the swishing and busy mouth were a problem

Winning with the horse constantly behind the vertical? Wow.. we are missing the foundation of dressage...

This is the best Dressage horse and rider in the world - why is the horse constantly swishing its tail in this nervous way? Isn't it supposed to swing slowly from side to side? This really confuses me everytime I see their performance as it is an expression of stress and not harmony and feeling comfortable.

It is definetly Not nervous. Seh is clearly moving her tail matching to her movement. YES this is possible.

I've seen several rounds from her and as a lowly equestrian centre rider, I still don't get it. Isn't dressage supposed to be about engaging hindquarters, working the upper line and lowering the croup? Dalera is systematically working with a hollow back, hind legs far behind and her tail is swishing all the time. When will judges stop overrating this kind of riding?

I agree wholeheartedly!! She's behind the vertical, not poll high. Tail-swishing and the noise coming from her (due to being behind the vertical)!! - clearly a stressed horse! And not only the judges at fault but also the commentators!! When you look at this mare's rear end you can see that she has very little muscle (in comparison to a horse that truly works from behind). Not a nice picture (or sound!!) and not indicative of what true dressage should be about!

There is a you tuber who compares both rides and shows that clearly that the pair Lottie Fry/Glamourdale are more often behind their vertical. You can find this easily when you give both names of the horses into a google search. Also, there, it is explained that Glamourdale is younger and a stallion with certain tasks to do in the offseason and that Jessica just had her second child. Valera is a tall mare, a different breed and it took her a while to grow her muscles for this tall frame. Therefore regardless of the rider both horses have differences due to age, training and gender. One can not compensate for everything but only strive to compromise to judge fairly a given performance at a given (present) day.

It hurts my soul to see dressage riding. It has nothing to do with harmony and elegance as it used to. The horses' heads are pulled tight with the curb, the animals almost all tear open their mouths to escape the pressure, salivate and sweat extremely, beat their tails incessantly. The horses' movements are just frantic, swearing. I don't understand what is so nice about torturing an animal like this and then getting top marks for this torture. Abd this concerns all Grand Prix dressage riders !

Could be a whole host of reasons, but it's likely the heat and the amount of effort Dalera and JVBW put into the warm up and test. Both of them are huffing and puffing from the heat. Only one of them is big enough for the microphones to catch the sound.

  • @shay4210

It's for many reasons. I suspect the heat, but some horses do that when they are in work. It's nothing too serious since you can see the horse still full of power by the end and walking away confidently. Microphones will usually pick that up and it sounds more serious then it is.

Because it's behind the vertical throughout the whole test! Being behind the vertical constricts the horse's breathing and is a basic and serious error that should be getting penalized.
