Great movie
As a soldier myself a have to admit that the battle of Bannockburn epitomises the art of war principles, primarily: the economy of force, cooperation, maneuverability and the unity of purpose. We can learn from Bruce to this day. And we should. First, Bruce organized the schiltron formation (spearmen unit) in a way that it could maneuver more quickly and flexibly, by cutting down the number of soldiers in such a unit and by shortening their pikes. It allowed them to efficiently advance and quickly change their direction, not only to stand their ground against an enemy, which was their main purpose before. Subsequently, Bruce assembled the units before the battle of Bannockburn keeping their possible main purpose in mind. Namely, he kept his cavalry in reserve in order to use them to eliminate the most dangerous enemy unit - English bowmen (truly terryfing foe at the time). Then he made sure to establish good communication between the units in order to avoid miscommunication and desorientation which could entail the defeat for the whole Scottish army. And finally, he took a position that favoured his main line unit, which would take on most of the fighting during the battle - the aforementioned pikemen. The muddy terrain was perfect to slow down enemy cavalry and allow schiltron units to defend from them more effectively. So when the battle started, Scottish pikemen were able to drive back most of the English cavalry thanks to their quick maneuvers, and when the English assembled their archers, Bruce sent the cavalry to wipe them out, which they did exceptionally well. In conclusion: Bruce organized his units in accordance with both the enemy and the requirements of the battle and it's circumstances; he kept his most powerful units (cavalry) for a specific task they would execute most effectively instead of wasting them for the main fight; and he ensured the efficient communication between his units and made sure that everyone knew their main goal. There's not many more of the general principles of war which a modern officer should keep in mind all the time. The only thing that's changed is technology level.

According to oral family history, an ancestor of mine named Artur (clan name long forgotten) fought for both William Wallace as a young teenager and Robert the Bruce as an adult and somehow managed to not be killed in battle or executed by the English. He was nobody important, just a common soldier. Around the time of Robert's death, Artur moved to Ireland, married, and had children, which is where I get the Gaelic part of my family tree. Very distant relation, to be sure, but the sound of uilleann pipes or bagpipes still stir my soul.
I am Scottish, and I can confirm that when I learned that my favourite band made a song about my home country protecting it's independence, thats what inspired me to accept how Scotland truly is THE best country in history, sure we may not have freedom at the moment, but we shall one day, again. Thank you Sabaton for this masterpiece. :)

You can’t compare Poland fighting the nazis and soviets to Scotland rebelling against the king, Robert the Bruce was English, a Norman Noble who purely used Scottish independence as a way to get power, I don’t have anything against him because my dads friend is his descendant and his wife my godmother. But Scotland was not fighting for freedom by any sense, I am saying this as a Scottish person aswell.

@@kitgoostrey6162Scotland was absolutely fighting for our independence! The English unrightfully occupied the country and stole our land and freedoms. Although there was many disputes amongst the Scottish lords of who claimed the thrown was theirs we did not fight for the crown, we fought for our land and people. And I’m saying this as a Scottish person who’s got the Cameron family’s blood running through his veins, my great great ancestor’s fought for their freedoms right alongside Robert.

@@helloiamcatbug.5702 First: Tsardom? Really? Second: the fact that the Polish army did sth bad (basically every army in the world did at least one bad thing), like in Chechoslovakia, doesn't exclude the fact that it fought for the freedom of Poland and it's citizens, often bravely and with sacrifice. One thing does not exclude the other. Your point is invalid because it's a logical error called "whataboutism". Instead of seeing and acknowledging the undoubtful truth in your opponent's words you try to shift the gravity of the discussion towards something else, a different problem, that discredits some other thing related to your opponent.
