More details, and why the Murkoff Tactical force killed Miles at the end: There's a DLC for Outlast called "Outlast:Whistleblower", in that DLC, you can hear Murkoff Tactical forces saying "kill anything that moves", they say this to make sure no one is left to tell anyone else about Murkoff, therefor the Murkoff Tactical force opened the door, and shot Miles. Edit: Miles is able to become the Walrider at the end because it says in a file that only a person who has experienced this much horror is able to control it.

Miles Upshur, a freelance journalist, receives a tip-off from an anonymous source about Mount Massive Asylum, a psychiatric hospital owned and operated by the Murkoff corporation. Upon gaining entry to the asylum, he finds the bodies of the asylum's staff strewn about the hallways, and the now escaped inmates, known as "The Variants," roaming the grounds. Progressing through the upper dormitories, he encounters an impaled SWAT officer, who in his dying moments tells the journalist to get out of the asylum while he still can. Exiting the dormitories, Upshur is attacked by a powerful inmate named Chris Walker, who throws him through a window, and down to the atrium. Upon regaining consciousness, he encounters "Father" Martin, an inmate who believes he is a priest. Martin says Upshur was sent by God to be a witness to his cult and has to stay in the asylum, and then departs as Upshur passes out again. Awakening, Upshur starts his attempt to find a way out of the building, while avoiding attacks from Walker and the other inmates. However, as he attempts to unlock the main doors from security control, he is ambushed and sedated by Martin, who again states that he must remain at the asylum and witness the events there. Martin shows him footage of the asylum's security forces being slaughtered by a mysterious, seemingly supernatural entity known as the Walrider before transporting a now-unconscious Upshur to the asylum's holding cells. Upshur is forced to work his way upwards through the sewers after encountering a pair of inmates, the Twins, who express a desire to kill and eat him. However, the duo abstain from attacking for the moment, as Martin has asked them not to harm the journalist. Upshur makes his way through the sewers, while avoiding attacks from hostile inmates, finally reaching the asylum's showers. While attempting to escape through the showers, however, he is attacked yet again by Walker, and escapes through the vents. Progressing further through the building, Upshur is soon chased into a corner by several inmates, but escapes through a dumbwaiter, only to be captured by one of the Asylum's now psychotic doctors, Dr. Rick Trager, who collects body parts of the inmates. Trager imprisons Upshur, strapping him to a wheelchair, and slices off two of his fingers using a large pair of shears. Upshur manages to escape and a chase ensues, followed by a struggle when Upshur pulls Trager into a moving elevator and crushes him between floors. Encountering Martin again, Upshur exits onto the asylum grounds, but he is chased back inside by the Walrider, revealed to be a ghost-like being which Upshur can only see with the naked eye and while using his camera's night vision. He is forced to circumnavigate the ruined stairway to access different floors of the building by following a trail of blood Martin left for him to follow. Upshur finally locates Martin in the asylum's chapel to witness the latter's death, self-immolation on a crucifix, before taking the now-repaired primary elevator down. Martin tricks Upshur, however, and instead of taking him to the exit, the elevator takes him to an underground military facility beneath the asylum. While searching for an exit, Upshur is attacked and incapacitated by Walker. However, before Walker can kill the journalist, the Walrider attacks and brutally kills the inmate before leaving. Upshur proceeds into the facility and meets Dr. Wernicke (originally believed to be dead), the scientist in charge of the entire experiment known as "Project Walrider". Wernicke explains that the Walrider is the result of nanotechnology experiments conducted on an inmate called Billy Hope, and that the Walrider is controlled by Hope. Wernicke orders Upshur to find Hope in the laboratory and kill him by shutting off his life support system, thus killing the Walrider. After accomplishing this task, Upshur is caught by the Walrider who brutally beats and possesses him. Limping towards the exit, he is confronted by Wernicke, who is accompanied by several armed guards who repeatedly shoot Upshur. As Upshur collapses to the floor, the screen fades to black and Wernicke's voice is heard as he realizes Upshur has become the Walrider's new host. Panicked gunfire, screams and mauling sounds are then heard briefly before the credits roll.

Well he actually did something.... He entered an asylum and has enough info to expose their butt holes.

Miles is a cynical man: he can be heard heavily swearing and he uses rough insults towards his enemies in writing, which is a large contrast to Waylon's gentle and reserved personality. He cracks dark jokes towards certain situations, such as calling Trager a "white collar business school douchebag", and tells another joke after killing Trager; he is very vengeful after the doctor sliced off his fingers, demanding reprisal. (Being aggressive includes slamming doors.) But....playing him he says no word and doesn’t show his face, I looked it up and he’s good looking! But besides that point....he experienced so much horror he is the host now. After all that work. Running. And fear in your veins just to be shot at the end. Waylon survived only yet to see Miles Upshur as the walrider. Poor Darling

The spirit enters his body when he died and he is now the spirit and destroys all of the evil since he was too weak and was going to die anyway. I must say this was a pretty good game obviously this is not the kind of game that would sell but it was executed very well. The disturbing and horrifying atmosphere along with the twisted dark scenery of the Lunatic asylum make this game a true horror game experience. You don't get weapons in this game but this is really how horror games should be made this game keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time i enjoyed it.

Man i felt bad for miles...he got clubbed thrown from a balcony got his fingers cut...got jabbed here and there by everyone...got stabbed with a knife by one of the asylum guys and even got slammed by the walrider....all that to uncover murkoff and finally he gets shot with not regret from the opposing side...the ending is so dark they shoot him with literally 0% mercy ...just all around fill his body with bullet holes...this game really makes u feel bad for the protagonist ...

Very big far stretch. Silent hill , Resident Evil and thr fisrt ClockTower game are much more scary and terrifying than Outlast . At some extent even games like FatalGround that aren't as grousome or torturous as Outlast ,be way more horrifying .

I don't get it. How does Upshur becomes the new host if he's dead? Don't you need to be alive to keep the ghost alive as well? Wasn't that the reason he was taking Billy's life support at the end?

What I believe happens, and that feeling is strengthened based on Whistleblower's ending, is that the Walrider keeps Miles alive and wreaks havoc afterwards by shielding him with the nanites that the Walrider is made of.

Yeah I know it's not a Disney film That's fucked up what he had to go through throughout the game then he tortured the poor guy mentally and physically yeah he was a fucking psychopath I didn't even get the game for my Ps4 I just watched the whole game on KZread but I'm waiting for outlast 2 to come out I want to see how the story continues after the after math and destruction he let behind imagine if this was really happening in the real world I had to go through what he experience I would have just blew my brains out after he cut off my fingers and fucking literally drove me to insanity this game is like the fucked up version of saw the hill have eyes version lol.

Flyingsandwiches1999 if i not mistake there is another ending that the MC survive with every rims still intact. i think i saw the ending where he choose to escape from the front door (aka where game start). in that ending the MC not have to fight a ghost. he just runaway from the asylum and upload what he recorded in his cam to internet. and in that ending the ghost seem can move outside asylum already.

Just finished the game on hard after so long, what a sense of accomplishment! XDXD

Dat ending though. Wernicke bamboozled you so hard. Also, the fact that they tortured madmen into having insane nightmares, only for most of them to fail to sustain the Walrider... yet the Protag managed, at least for a while - that's a pretty fucked up implication/statement about how the horrors he witnessed changed him. I love the Outlast series.

Glad my friend recommended this game to me , it's really cool

The second I saw the walls turn into concrete around the elevator I realized there’s no going out.

Literally just finished and looked this up so I could get some opinions from other people, I know this game is old, but it was one sale for 3 dollars, this game scared the absolute crap out of me at first but eventually turned into a speed run fest when I realised I could basically just run from everything, love this game and the protagonist

At 2019 I am enjoying this game cuz when the game get released I was too young to play this game and get scared to easily.. I was 9 then.. So just enjoying the gameplay now

Man.. the satisfaction when seeing the soldiers was unfortunately so fast to go. Immediately lost the smile in my face, when the guy started blasting.

After 8 years i now was able to play it first time ever on my ps5. I still am looking for the lore or what exactly happend at the end because i just finished the game it was badass

In the movie theather(in the game) they say that to be able to developp some powers u have to be "traumatize until to be the closer possible to death" and then u are good for the job, they will place u in the morphogenik capsule to maintain u alive, and at this moment ull be able to control the waldrider who is not a ghost but a powerfull being created by science and made off nanobots. So an traumatized being controlling a HUGE killing machine. Mile's still alive (notice that the special forces were with an doctor 16:39 and that doctor were here to place mile in the morphogenik capsule to maintain him alive so he will control waldrider), THE HOST CONTROLS WALDRIDER.

The Walrider has two hosts; Billy Hope AND Miles Upshur. In the Outlast: The Murkoff Account, the Walrider visits Billy's mother then kills her after he realises that she sold him out to Murkoff. The Walrider's nanite cloud form then got destroyed because Murkoff blasted it to hell with sonic emitters or something. But there was also proof of Upshur being alive since his neighbour said that she saw him a few days after the events of Outlast 1. There's also the fact that the Walrider then transferred its physicality into ants (yeah ants) and basically destroyed everything inside Upshur's old apartment.

I believe that miles is immortal he got beaten up and tackles like a million times and he got his fingers cut off and he felt about a couple stories and he gets a ghost in his body and then he survives getting shot multiple times with a assault rifle
