Outer Wilds Echoes of the Eye | Story Explained, Narrative Analysed

Ойындар

#OuterWilds #echoesoftheeye #storyexplained
The Echoes of the Eye ending ties together events from the Outer Wilds story in spectacular fashion. But how hard is it to get to the Echoes of the Eye ending? It takes a lot of puzzle solving, and patience and even then, the Echoes of the Eye ending might not make a lot of sense if you haven't analysed all the slide reels and visions aboard The Stranger.
This video breaks down Echoes of the Eye's ending and the Echoes of the Eye story to give a full understanding of Outer Wilds' story - how one of The Stranger's inhabitants made a choice that led to the Nomai's discovery of the Eye of the Universe and, ultimately, how one Hearthian explorer (that's you!) unravelled the secrets of the solar system.
This video is split into an Echoes of the Eye story recap, Echoes of the Eye ending (and story) explained, and some general thoughts on how Echoes of the Eye compares to the main Outer Wilds story. Video chapters can be found below (and in the video) if you want to skip straight to a certain part.
Thanks for watching :)

Hi! Welcome to my channel. I do videos about video games, breaking down stories and analysing their narratives to discuss the ways games can tell stories that other mediums could only dream of. The vision torch was such a great idea. Giving the Hatchling a chance to synthetize his discoveries, to tell them to somebody, even if they would die in an instant, gives closure in another way than the main story, and rewards the player for looking into the Nomai story rather than jumping from clue to clue with only the Eye in mind.

I don't know how I did it, as I am pretty dumb, but I completed all of Outer Wilds and the DLC without looking anything up... except for ONE thing. I just always had some other planet to explore and remember what I saw in another. I was stuck for a while on how to get to the Black Hole Forge on Brittle Hollow, but I remembered that Ash Twin had those towers that were said to teleport to every planet. The one thing I had to look up was for the DLC. I couldn't figure out how to get across the bridge with the light shining on it for the last seal. Crazy that you actually had to DIE to get across it, but it makes sense.

Great video, good job! I only have one question: at 15:18, that is not really what the vision means, right? It is a guide to the secret passage in the tower. I still think your point still stands though. This was the hardest puzzle for me by far, and I heard they later changed the vision to be more explicit, so I believe it wasn't only me who had trouble doing it lol

While it didn't ruin the experience, that was the most annoying sticking point for me. I had reached the top of that tower in the real world, seen the electrical devices on the ceiling, and the electrical cables in the gorge, and come to the conclusion I somehow had to cut the power to the building, or something. I only had just found the Dreamworld and didn't realize that it was a digital simulation and could impact the real world. Tldr I looked it up and unlike any other time I looked something up, I felt like I may have never guessed it on my own.

Good to see another new video on Echoes of the Eye! Thanks for all the effort you put into it. :D FWIW, the Owlks determined the way into the dream world *before* building it in its entirety. This is evident if you check the slide reel order -- each slide reel's place in the sequence is marked on its initial slide; it's that circle of icons with arrows between them. During those first tests where they determine the most effective artifact shape, the dream world vision only really shows as fuzzy, vague, and a dark semblance of a space with a fire in the center, indicating the digital realm was not yet developed much at all. Later, in the bell tests with singular participants, there appears to be a small, very basic area with a simple path and sunlight. Prior to departing their home planet, the Owlks had already attained the technology to see and share visions via blue fire. They used that technology to find the eye in the first place, and then later, to scan the eye up close. I don't think it's too farfetched to imagine that the most intelligent of their race were aboard the stranger, and given so much time and resources, were able to push that "flame of visions" technology to its logical extreme: a vision you can live inside. It seems funny that you should bring up poetic license as it pertains to Echoes of the Eye. There's plenty in the original game, too! Crystals that magically redirect all the gravity around them, how everyone is able to survive passing through a black hole, Nomai and Hearthians controlling spheres remotely with their gaze, trees growing on the surface of an atmosphere-less moon... I wonder why Echoes of the Eye stood out to you over all that?

I think echoes of the eye had the best and worst puzzles of the game as a whole. Having to lookup the answer to the tower puzzle (that the simulated world affects the real world) was a major let down. But the reveal of the lantern bubble, followed by the reveal of the loading screen clipping, were mind blowing to me and they'll stick with me as some of my favorite video game moments ever.

At 15:00, that vision is actually showing you how to enter a secret archive room, not showing you how to get into the other fire rooms! But on another note, with how this game is played, it’s very possible to have confusion with every new slide reel and to misinterpret information!

I think the 22 minute time limit was fine I didn't feel any frustration by it. It helps to know all the entrances to the stranger, and maybe early on, sticking a probe on the dam so you know when it's gonna fail PS, there's a third slide reel in the endless canyon library, if you ride down on top of the elevator instead of inside it, you can hop off on the library's second floor

Indeed, for me it gave a sense of challenge more than anything, like exploring Brittle Hollow's settlement before it crumbles, or the Hourglass Twins. Granted, I'm a relatively good gamer, I get that someone not that used to a controller can feel frustrated by that.

Fantastic video. I can't wait to see where you go next! While I agree that the reels should have been viewable in your ship logs, I don't think they were too difficult to figure out. I had the most trouble with determining where to go in the dark or how to actually get around the "enemies". In the end I fumbled through and got to where I needed, but it felt like I was lucky, rather than solving a puzzle.

There were parts of the Dream World that, after spending hours upon hours trying to make sense of them, I just had to skip entirely. Eventually, I thought I would just read walkthroughs and execute them myself, but I gave up on even doing that because I couldn't keep track of when I was supposed to be asleep vs. dead, the particular order I needed to do it all in. So I never actually finished Endless Canyon or Shrouded Woodlands or Starlit Cove. I spent hours on each of them and then said the hell with it and got enough clues to go to the Underground Lake and unlocking the vault. And upon finding out the solutions to all of that stuff, my reaction was "no way in hell would I have figured this out."

The basic building block for a ringworld, a spinny boy But what I still want to see is what exactly lies behind the burnt out lenses of the slide reels. I have a theory on your question of why the simulation required sleeping. I think the simulation harnesses the shared memories of the inhabitants to recreate the stranger itself. The simulation has extended versions of the locations we explore on the stranger with the addition of the Saturn-like planet they originally orbited. It could also just be extensions that they built in the simulation while time passed in the real world. This makes more sense to me since their memories of the stranger would be stronger than the home they dismantled. The only issue I see with this is our character not bringing their own memories into the mix. However, us being witness to the stranger's ring world could explain that away. There are also many more of these aliens in the sim so they could essentially drown out our influence. The vision torches existing before the success of the simulation shows they had technology which can read and recreate memories. The simulation could therefore be an advancement of this technology.

I feel like Echoes emphasized an element that was barely perceptible in the main game (except the first times you'd suffocate, witness the supernova, or explored Dark Bramble): Dread. And it does so since the very start: By getting the shadow of the station seemingly eat up the whole system, I was genuinely concerned in my first loop. And the fact you can't see the Sun's status in the station and especially in the simulation... It gives you all the more dread that things are about to end, and you don't know when.

I liked the DLC. Because of the main game I was able to really buckle down and figure out everything on my own. I wish I had more access to the ship log because, YES you actually can replay most of the slide reels which are the majority of the puzzle solving; what is this reel revealing and how does it fit in? They were not surface with anything. Everything kept requiring you to go deeper and deeper into each aspect. I only wish there was more interaction with the end person you rescue.

thanks for the summary. I would not have been able to finish that one myself, because that game gives me a certain form of dread and nausea (for whatever reason), that i cannot work with. Now that i've seen the explanation, i have to say something about this dlc: While it certanly adds some new gameplay and something to explore, the story that was told is pretty...standalone-y? I don't know how to say this but it feels like you're not missing anything crucial to the main story. While yes they did something to the eye and discovered it sooner, after the prisoner undid their stuff the main story happened as it would have been anyway. So with that Race written out of the outer wilds story, never discovering the eye and never interacting with it, we would have still had the Nomai finding the eye signal and the story would have been the same. It is a nice addition to the story, but it did not give anything, that would have made the ending or other things of the main story be looked at in another light so to speak. And i mostly say this because while it was interesting to hear the dlc summarized, it never gave me an "Ah-ha!" moment, while thinking back to the parts i know of the main story. That's in no way something negative. I guess i'm just used to dlcs or addons to clear some plotholes or expand on things hinted at in the main game, and it's something different, when the story just gets something a little bit extra that can be interesting, while not being part of the grand story.

Video games are a form of art. And since art is entirely dependent on one’s passion, it is easy to tell when a game is made with passion, or with money in mind. Pro money games are like Call of Duty and Diablo. But Outer Wilds is a game that was made by a team that wanted to tell a story. Gamers will forever appreciate passion games far more than money games. If there were ever a 10/10 video game, it’d be this one. Not that anyone who worked on this game would ever see this, but thank you all for sharing a game with us that you clearly cared about.

17:03 Where did you get the idea that they've built a 1 to 1 replica of their home world? That isn't what I interpreted. I think they just built a world as close as they could, or just something that took inspiration from their home world. As for how they developed this world. I imagine the world must be encoded in the lantern itself. When they were developing the first lanterns, they must have built just a simple placeholder plane with nothing on it just to test that it would work. After that, they started developing the actual virtual world with all its buildings and trees and everything, and that was encoded in the final version of the lantern
