Outer Space Invader Pawn in the French | AI Leela Chess Zero vs Stockfish

This is a round 63 game between AI Leela Chess Zero v20.2-32930 and Stockfish 190203. It was from the Season 14 Superfinal of the Top Chess Engine Championship 2019. Both Leela Chess Zero and Stockfish earned their way to this final 100 game match. The featured game's key middlegame decision, and its beautiful endgame play make it highly instructional. The opening was a French Defense, MacCutcheon, Janowski variation. The pop quiz in the middlegame position is likely to make even a most experienced player struggle some in determining the optimal path. Instead of counting pawns, let's see which pawns really count!

    There is a great takeaway hidden in this game which is useful even outside chess. Most of our decisions are based on rules, experience and perceptions made out of those experience. Even stockfish looks like victim of best practices based decisions. AI like leela zero thinks like a fresh mind. Found many examples where leela broke this barrier created in our mind.

What a killer pawn, basically removing the king and a rook from play for the majority of the endgame!

    One thing I like about your breakdown is that it is not too fast, considers some of the alternate play lines in just enough detail, and points out what appear to be clear breaks in traditional approaches taken by humans, the chess engines, and the AI. This and other videos by others, clearly seem to show the advantages of position and freedom of action over pure material gains, assuming you can capitalize on the momentum and not make a blunder. Please keep posting. Thank you.

    People who wonder why Leela underpromotes pawns sometimes, I think this is because the way Leela's neural network is trained. She gets "rewarded" when she wins a game, no matter how she did it or how long it takes. So, when Leela is in a winning position, she doesn't try to find the most efficient way to win - which sometimes gives birth to hilarious underpromotions!

  • @vigilante8374
    @vigilante83745 жыл бұрын

    The main advantage of a rook underpromotion is there are fewer possible moves for it to calculate per ply--LC0 can go a little deeper for the same amount of time spent thinking. If it sees that a rook is a win, there's no need to spend any additional time checking that a queen is also a win (could be a stalemate lurking somewhere.)

    Yeah but that requires a consistently superhuman level of accuracy that only engines possess. A lot of these positions are knifes' edge and the advantage you get could collapse by playing the wrong move. So as long as humans can't calculate with that depth, precision, and confidence, it'll remain popular.

I find there's a general bias toward AI chess software because it's more 'human like' than the purely machine calculators. That's why we always see AI wins and rarely an AI loss.

    Can you explain Black's move 7? Blocks in that eventual clown rook? Why would Black choose this over Castling, pushing the pawn, or moving the Clown? The pivotal Bishop move to g6 I thought of, but I had no understanding of why it might be a good move and couldn't follow it up, but I at least thought of it!

    It took a few moments but I also thought Bg6 would be good... if you gotta give up a piece may as well break down the opponents pawn defense and get a pawn of your own one step closer to his king while you're at it.

    Don't know how i would get use of bishop g6, but it was the first move to get in mind. Nice =)

    Amazing....how Lella see the value of it peace and pawn in the positon....and if u thin it's so obvious that it's all right given up 3 pawns when the the black rook willl just not contribute. Crazy game

    I wonder if the rook promotion was to avoid any stalemates. Definitely shows what Leela had "in mind" if play was to continue. Probably didn't forsee any use out of diagonal movements so a rook was chosen. Maybe because all diagonals needed were covered by the dark squared bishop? Hmmm
