Outdoor Kitchen Useless Installing Blackstone Griddle

Фильм және анимация

We own a 2019 Grand Design Reflection 297rsts. My wife, Rennie and I love it. We have owned 7 other RVs in the past, and have never liked cooking inside. We were thrilled that this new RV had an outdoor kitchen. However, the little cooktop is almost useless.

    Great Job, I have used a 17" Blackstone griddle with my Lance trailer for some time. I use the Blackstone stand as my trailer is not large enough for the outdoor kitchen. You really will get a lot of use out of that griddle as they really work well for a lot of different styles of cooking. Enjoy!

    We have the same 2-burner stove on our brand new GD Transcend. 1st use of outdoor kitchen, my Lodge griddle was NOT over the knobs, yet both knobs melted down, as you predict (of course before I saw your video). Coleman was always bright enough to put the knobs on the front panel of their stoves. Blackstones are great; we have the 4-burner version on our home patio and it gets a good workout. Well done on your project outcome, and on showing how you think your way to that outcome.

    I have a 36 inch Blackstone at home and am thinking of buying a 22 inch model to rv with. I don't have the slide out, but will travel with it as a lose item. I noticed that the height in which your slide sits, the griddle would be uncomfortably high. But you are making the best use of that space for your grill.

  • @RVSite2Sight

    @RVSite2Sight

    Жыл бұрын

    Carl, you are right... it is uncomfortably high. I have the red chocks, and it seems that everywhere I go, the passenger side is the one that needs to be raised, making the griddle even higher. I usually use a little folding stool to stand on. However, the griddle does a spectacular job of cooking, and that's why I don't mind the inconveniences. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I’m with everyone else. The stove top is unhandy. A regular size skillet won’t fit over a burner with the windscreen in place. And forget about trying to use both burners at the same time. Maybe boil water in a teacup size pot. But mine has a shelf on top that is near and dear to my heart and I don’t want to shorten it. Still plan on getting a griddle just to set on a table. Maybe I’ll use the old one for a table unless someone knows of a single burner replacement.

    i suggest a screen or tinfoil lid when you are using it. it will pop and squirt liquids everywhere even with the lightest of hands. oil has a way of seeping everywhere, it carries in the air, little drops turn into a sticky dirt and grime collecting sheen on top of everything within air shot. honestly, coming from the fast burger and diner industry, i would not suggest it. grease and oil are gonna be a real issue for that. make it a pop out and off with legs that pop out. that way you can move it away from the rig.

    Personal preference, but I am with you about grill'in eggs and bacon on a griddle. My cookstove on my TT has never been used. I don't like cooking that close to my travel trailer. Bad things can happen. I am thinking like you, take out the stove and make that area a storage area, My cookstove has the outdoor shower connection also, so that too has never been used. I have another outdoor connection on the main water input. So this will be a good little storage for my tools. Perfect to free up my toolbox that is taking up space on the other storage under the dinette area.

    Hi Keith. It depends on your situation. One of the problems I have is the little shelf slides do not come out far enough without releasing the little "catches" on the sides of the rails. On mine, I release them so I can pull the shelf out just a little more. When I do that, yes, I can remove the grease cup without taking the top (griddle) off the base. I am trying to find drawer slide rails with four sections instead of three, so I can pull the shelf out farther. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Now that you have withing a doubt used this to cook on, how much heat is generated and transferred to the wood surfaces. Do you have enough room to move the panel up to be able to provide additional cooling space? Or build a more robust metal safety wall? That panel above looks like it may catch fire easily.

    Hi Gary, at the end of the video I refer to another video which I made the shield to reflect the heat. It serves two purposes... as a heat shield, and as a grease shield. Here's a link to that video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/eICAmK2QppaZYKg.html

    If you drill holes in the wood where the legs are on the grill that will allow you to push your grill back into its storage area without flipping the griddle over and it would make the griddle safer because it would not be able to move that way, although the way you have it screwed down it’s safe enough but if you could just lower it down a little you wouldn’t have to flip the griddle over just leave it in the ready position

  • @RVSite2Sight

    @RVSite2Sight

    Hi Steven, on a later video (Blackstone Griddlin') I make shield rated at 2000 degrees to direct the heat away from the griddle. I considered the hood, but I was concerned about the heat coming out from under the griddle pan. After leaving the griddle on for about an hour, the wall behind my shield was cool, and the wood shelf under the griddle base was only slightly warm. I screwed the griddle base to the plywood shelf (in this video), so it doesn't move at all. I am currently looking for shelf slides that are beefier and longer to replace the flimsy ones that came on the RV. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Nice video, but may I suggest that you find your way over to Rockler.com and purchase a drawer slide that is both substantial and geared for the weight of the blackstone to begin with. You will be hands down more happy with your install. The stuff used by many trailer builders is just plain worthless. They even make triples that will completely alleviate your fire hazard situation when cooking. Get that baby out away from the combustibles.

    I think you need to secure the drawer so that it can't slide out and engage the knob for the propane. Maybe just a simple hole drilled in the top to drop a pin through to ensure that it can't slide. Just a suggestion, but a great project none the less.

    Hi Roy, yes, that was a concern of mine, so although it is not in the video, I added a peg in front of the shelf that keeps that from happening. However, I never leave the unit hooked up to the gas line. The reason I wanted it secure was to prevent the knob getting damaged. Thanks for watching and subscribing.

    @@theodorehyatt1782 Yes, I only hook up the quick connect line under my RV when I am cooking. Once I'm done, I disconnect before I stow it away. Also, as a 50 year veteran of camping (I'm 72 years old), I never leave the griddle or grill unattended, and always have a fire extinguisher handy. Grease fires are always possible.

    I would be concerned about the heat pouring out between the burner and the bottom of the grill on the back that will be a lot of heat being thrown off back there. If the was a way to have an additional slide to pull out in conjunction with the original you could extend it thus giving you far more space for the Heat to dissipate more freely from the back you could lay the additional slides on their sides on the slide you have already even if they slid out only six inches more would be a great help to allow circulation of air keep the area behind the griddle cooler. If the slides need a half inch clearance being on their sides under the addition plywood add and use a half inch piece of plywood you would need only one inch more than the clearance you have now. And I believe based upon your height measurements it would be possible to do this easily enough.

    I like tinkering! Always have. I like tearing stuff up and rebuilding. The good thing about RVing, it's never boring. If you're a street rodder, you should know what I mean. When I was 17 (back in '65), I had a 55 chevy with a 327, 2 four barrels, a four speed Hurst shifter, and lake pipes. I took out the bench seat and replaced it with 2 bucket seats from a Plymouth Fury. See, my life is not boring. Sometimes you just do stuff because it's fun.
