Outdoor Cat, Ferret & Genet Enclosure/Cattery | All natural

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This is our outdoor 2 in 1 ferret enclosure/cattery. This is currently home to 4 ferrets, a genet, and 5 cats. We have tried to keep it all-natural without many plastic toys and such, but instead, create enrichment such as placing food around the enclosure so they can search and find it. We have also used tree branches, plants and woodchippings to create a real-world environment that the animals would likely be situated in.
Hope you enjoy it!

    Thank you so much for commenting this. My ferret died in January (not from natural causes which makes it worse) and I had an anxiety attack last night because it hurts so bad. And knowing that that she's in an amazing place with plenty of food and water and place to roam makes me feel at ease. Thank you

    First, I obviously have to mention that I love this enclosure. I would love to build something like this and just live in it. Secondly, how on earth did you cohabitate a genet, a wild animal, with a whole business of ferrets and five cats? While I haven’t done much research on genets, I’ve been under the impression that they are solitary and rather shy. Wouldn’t the genet either attack the domestic animals or get overwhelmed by their presence? But hey, if it works that’s some amazing enrichment for all of them.

  • @TheCatandFerret

    @TheCatandFerret

    3 жыл бұрын

    The genet doesn't live along side the cats, since they are house/indoor cats that tend to go into the cattery of a daytime, however, the genet does live in the enclosure along with the ferrets. When growing up, the genet was living with one of our very docile jills, so he had some interactions with a ferret. When he got older, we then transferred him into the big enclosure you see in this video, along with the other ferrets. The ferrets and genet tend to keep to themselves, as the enclosure is big enough for them to have their own space if they want/need it. The genet isn't fazed by the ferrets, and they get on rather well. We have actually seen the genet initiate play with the ferrets, we've also seen them feed together, and even sleeping in the same beds together. We do have some footage of this, and we plan on making a video in future to show some of this behaviour, be sure to stick around!

    We regularly check them for fleas and ticks, and we make sure we give them the correct treatments/dosages to keep on top of it. As for cleaning, the cats, ferrets, and genet are all rather tidy animals, and they tend to do their business in certain parts of the enclosure and not all over the place, which is a massive help for us, as cleaning can be as easy as a couple scoops of a shovel!

    Thank you! And our cats and ferrets have grown up with each other so they usually get on well! You may be able to condition your cat and ferret to get along through introducing them slowly, but it also depends on their personality too. For example, although all of our cats and ferrets get on with each other relatively well, some of our cats have little patience towards our ferrets and only have minimal or small interactions, whereas others will play with the ferrets.

    We are based in the UK! Some of this footage was shot in summer, hence why it looks so lush and green. As for winter, the plants and leaves tend to die down until the following spring/summer, but it gives the habitat a nice, autumn look to it. It can get very cold in winter, but the animals have access to indoor sections all year round, as well as multiple beds to sleep in.

    It's hard to put a price on the exact amount it cost to make, as it is the result of years of work. This was originally a bird aviary for about 19-20 years and was a lot more basic than what it is now. However, a lot of it is built with timber, logs, and wire mesh, so the materials can vary in price depending on the supplier. If anything, it's probably more expensive in hours to make than the materials used, as something on this scale will take a long time to build!

    The good thing with this enclosure is a lot of it is shaded. During the summer months, the ferrets tend to sleep above ground to keep cool, whereas in the winter they tend to sleep underground/in the many beds we have provided for them and snuggle together. We also have a little water tray for the ferrets so they can dip into if it gets too hot during summer.

    They do! They will sometimes (very rarely) have a little squabble here and there, but 90% of the time they get on well. They were all brought up together from kittens/kits to adults

    The entire enclosure is lined with wire mesh, about 2-3ft deep in some places. This way the ferrets can burrow if they like but they can't escape.

    It's mostly built from timber, wooden logs, and wire mesh. It's the result of years of work over time, it was originally a bird aviary - now turned into a huge enclosure for our pets. In terms of how we made it, it's been years of planning, work, and a lot of helping hands!

    This is awesome really but the hanging food and all......we do realize these are domesticated animals not wild right? I feed a frankenprey myself but I don't know if I'd make them hunt. I just spend time with them and play with them hence I don't work my husband does. This is what domestic animals need is human interaction not teaching them to be wild for enrichment. 💁‍♀️

  • @TheCatandFerret

    @TheCatandFerret

    2 жыл бұрын

    This way of feeding isn't what we rely on. We hang enough raw food up for them occasionally, and we always have a dry food option out for them to eat. This way there is no concern about any of them not getting enough food because we make sure each ferret gets enough raw food, and they have access to dry food 24/7 to eat whenever they please. This hanging up food method just gets them more engaged in feeding time, rather than just having food always handed to them. Our ferrets are also interacted with every day, and they are regularly handled and played with. Ultimately, they are pets, so we wouldn't want to make them as wild as possible, as we do enjoy being able to interact with them, and keep them as family pets. However, we believe that tapping into this bit of naturalism in them is healthy, and keeps their way of living that bit more dynamic.
