Outcry in Lagos, Nigeria: Controversy Surrounds Mende Villa Estate Demolitions

The recent demolition of homes at Mende Villa Estate in Lagos has sparked outrage and triggered a heated debate. Residents, whose hopes turned to despair, now face displacement and seek redress for their losses. The Lagos State Government defends its decision, citing the necessity to reclaim the Odo Iya Laro drainage channel. However, affected residents express dismay, claiming they were only notified of the demolition twice, in 2021 and 2023. In this discussion, Isabella Adediji, a resident at Mende Villa Estate, shares her firsthand experience and discusses the challenges confronting the community. Tune in to hear her account and gain insight into the complexities surrounding urban development policies in Lagos State.

Its hard for everyone especially for the owner of the house. Financial difficulty. Rental pronlems. Homelessness. Terrible government and no compensation.

While bearing with the residents; from the lady’s own words demolition notices were issued in 2021, 2022…’ so what were they still doing in the house. Expecting a reminder and empathy for 48 hrs in 2024 is simply irresponsible. Truth be told!

There is no iota of humanity in this current administration. It is just unimaginable!!!, I just pray that the people remain strong despite this life changing adversity. Nigeria can happen to anyone at anytime except those in political class but their own time of nemesis will definitely come.

It’s not the fault of the administration, things have gone worse over the years from all the previous administration. Military in the past messed everything up , the result is what we are now faced with. But I hope they should show some humanity to save lives.

As someone who has lived his whole life in Lagos,I knew such demolition would come to that area some day. I am sure people will raise concerns if Makoko is demolished, regardless of the fact that it is an illegal settlement.

Yes, just like Makoko that has turned into global exhibition of what Slum is like! Yet, people profit from such existence. Even with 20 years advanced notice for possible demolition, a day like this could come. And shall government allow continuous existence and embarrassment of such slum to continue???

They have been at this for years. It is a pity but the buildings are located in the ROW of the Canal. They had to go at the end of it all.

The outcry is, there is always a plan to demolish Igbo structure in Lagos. A respected Pastor who attended the meeting exposed it to the public.

@@Southernview3k "A respected Pastor who attended the meeting exposed it to the public" That's a flat out lie. If not What is the Pastor's name? Which meeting was this? Who exactly threatened to demolish Igbo houses? The government? Or maybe one agbero on the street. The problem is that when you start peddling rumours as facts, it can be very dangerous. If you haven't got clear evidence of certain things don't spread them.

@@StanleyOkafor-ey6yn any tribalism is wrong.. fullstop. Whether it is by Igbos or Yorubas or Edos or whoever. However this nonsense that Igbos are being targeted for demolition is completely false. The overwhelming victims of these demolitions across Lagos have been Yorubas but as soon as it affects a single Igbo person, some people start calling it tribalism. The truth is that Lagos is and has been the least tribalistic state in the entire country. There are Igbos who find it easier to buy land and build homes in Lagos than in other South East states that is not theirs.

Sorry sister. We need development. However, let's people and Government learn from thes incidents, and work out a better approach to avert these problems. And madam, the news is that it can be Worse in Abroad. Yes, there can be worse situations in abroad. Not all that glitter, that is gold. It is a learning point for everyone. Above all, the government should simplfy and competently define all safe measures and requirements to be followed from Day one, before commencing any building projects. People equally, by compulsion, comply to the latter. So that from now, no new building structure shall be found inappropriately situated in the future. This is what is happening Abroad. No human face, but Systems.

Again, don't let anybody gas light you, every inch of lagos has been planned by awolowo, odo iya alaro has been in existence before some of us were born, that canal connects the whole of the mainland to prevent flooding, now people have started building all canals without govt approval, hoping the government won't come, mind you the canal was meant to have 140m width buh it was reduced by the government to 100m because of that particular villa, so manny houses inside lagos are without approval, thank you honourable commissioner
