You see, as an Indonesian myself, I completely understand. And no, I am straight, I just don't prefer to have a relationship yet or maybe ever. Although I only know two people so far who aren't straight. One of em is my elementary school friend. Indonesia is a country with many cultures, you may see on television on how we have so many tolerances towards each others. But if you live in the society, it's different. I've seen people like him before, being an outcast and stuff, disowned by their own parents. Although I love Indonesia, it pains me to say I don't like the people much. So many self-proclaimed religious folks, but hating and judging one another. It's sad really.

Yes, Indonesia is a conservative country. Most people here cant accept LGBT. For those of you who said indonesia is still far behind than the developed countries, not accepting LGBT is not the sole reason for you to say “thats why indonesia is a third country”. There are more factors than that, and remember even though your country is more developed than mine, each country still has its own weaknesess just like people. No country is perfect. And also, our values are different than yours. You may think that your values is right, but it may not be right for us.

Suddenly, everything is about religion. Every politian use religion as a tactic, public figures use religion to gain sympathy, goods use halal certificate for most random things (imagine a refrigerator has halal certificate -__-. It's not like if someone put pork in there, then it's become halal food right?) etc. I feel like sometimes, everybody's forget the true essences of the religion itself.

@@marinmazer It's ok! I don't mind answering. Honestly, I feel like it should have been enough with the human rights law we have in Indonesia, but since most people seem to disregard that law's existence when it comes to lgbtq+ people, new laws to protect them might be necessary at least to punish those who discriminate lgbtq+ person. I certainly wouldn't oppose it if it is to be made, but with the situation in my country as it is right now, I honestly don't think our government here will make it happen. Moreover, even if it was made there is also no guarantee that the discrimination will stop. It's sad, but most Indonesians (especially the older generations) are pretty close-minded and stubborn, unwilling to accept that time is changing.

I’m a korean canadian living in Indonesia. The majority of local Indonesians are definitely very homophobic bc of their strong Islamic backgrounds. I go to an international highschool, and the people in my school+ other international/intercultural schools are much more open minded (they watch jeffree, james charles etc). It’s very interesting for me to see such difference between locals who live in regular indo neighborhoods compared to more posh neighborhoods. One thing I’m sure of, A LOTTTTT of indo teens love KPOP and I’m positive that it’s affecting their views on LGBT (kpop group’s normally provide fanservice w/ the members and their fans would ship them). If the local teens here slowly become more and more open minded from the influence of kpop, I think the future of lgbt acceptance for the youth of indonesia is looking alright.

Nearly all Indonesian videos mentioning 'LGBT' are littered with comments saying things like 'the LGBT community should be treated more badly than animals' or 'more than 80% of the members of Indonesia's LGBT community suffers from homophobia, we should make it a 100%'. I don't think it's a crime at all? It's my personal opinion though, so chill yourself out. If you have something negative to say just keep it to yourself, it's better than hurting other's feelings. I'm Indonesian and I'm straight, but I never despise people who are LGBT. I respect them, it's their own life after all. I mean, it's not harming us at all! They're being themselves and they're happy. All we need is to support them, If I ever had a friend who is LGBT, I won't mock them or anything. I'll support them and keep on being their friend. Spread love, not hate. ♡

But now I understand that mocking and disrespecting the LGBT community will just bring more hate to me and it's wrong too to disrespect a community in my culture and religion. Every country has their own values no country in this world is perfect ideal. We live in a sinful world... Blah blah blah (that's the fact that i believe) It is impossible to have LGBT rights here in Indonesia as we stand in godly values. Sadly, Our Lgbt brothers and sisters are treated extremely bad in this country which is contrary to the godly values itself. I don't agree on legalizing their rights but we should not treat them like an outcast. I dare not to say any solution to this matter (as this is a very complicated matter) what we can do to our brothers and sisters is accept them for who they are which does not always mean we agree on what they do. Indonesia is a country deeply tied with culture, tradition and religion. While not as extreme as some other countries that incorporate religious law above all, most people are not open-minded at all whether they want to admit it or not. Let's say, if someone converts to another religion or marries a person with a different ethnic group background, their family will snap, doesn't matter if that person is fully an adult or not.
