Outbreak - Cold War Zombies Review Series

Ойындар

While Die Maschine and Firebase Z were much simpler experiences that almost any zombies player could pick up and enjoy, Outbreak was something entirely new. A massive, open-world, objective-oriented approach to zombies that could be more easily updated throughout the year to create a massive, ever-evolving sandbox to play around with. Treyarch hoped to create a new take on the classic zombies formula that could help bring in those that might not have given the zombies mode a try before, while at the same time, being something that longtime fans could love. Does it succeed in achieving those rather lofty ambitions? Let's discuss!

The reason why Collateral and Armada are so different is because they're Combined Arms maps, not Fireteam ones. Interestingly Zoo, despite being blatantly designed as a Fireteam map and having the "wz_" prefix in the game files, was never released as a Fireteam map and is exclusive to Outbreak.

@@JohnnyJohnnyJohnnyJohnnyJohnny Honestly, to me, that seemed like Treyarch trying to tackle a strawman. The people that complained about maps being reused weren't complaining that "People can play this in multiplayer" They were complaining that, as Rizzo points out in the Bad, the maps don't fit the gameplay too well, they're too big, too empty, look uninspired and boring and have nothing special about them. They literally do less than Nacht did, when it comes to design and gameplay.

Y'know what they should've done for the Excision bossfight? Two ordas. Change the models a bit, make one of them focus on ranged attacks and the other move lightly faster and only do Melee ones, call them The Twins or something. Just something more interesting, honestly. Literally a simple spin like "instead of one, it's two" is a million times more interesting than just copy and paste. Plus it'd make the amount of time you have to clear the LZ make sense. You just have way too much time for what is an Orda fight and a few zombies and specials. Also, quick nitpick you probly didn't notice: Die Maschine establishes that in the Dark Aether, corpses float up, however in the Holdout that doesn't happen. Probably an oversight.

With the mysteries keeping people engaged i can agree Remember when die maschine had orda's going around the map from far away? • @dominik4666

Honestly man, I couldn't agree more. It's also why I really REALLY hated what Vanguard zombies is doing now. We never got to see anything that is native to the Dark Aether. Everything we are fighting are things from our or previous worlds that were taken there and have been changed. The dark aether was this mysterious realm, you had cults who worshipped great beings, but we never knew anything about it. Hell, even the Forsaken was just a man who managed to survive far enough to become a "Deity" himself. So when Vanguard comes in and gives them faces and voices, it removes ALL of the interest I ever had. It went from this incomprehensible reality of sheer cosmic horror to some cool RPG Game designs that say over the top things. The dark aether shouldn't have a face. Honestly, that's depressing to the point I think I'll pretend Vanguard isn't Canon. It's not like it's any relevant to the story anyways. The dark aether barely started, it barely picked up its pace and momentum and somehow they managed to ruin the thing right away.

Honestly I also agree blundell shot zombies in the foot by giving too many answers. Hince why aether needed to end. There wasn't any point in doing it anymore. All the mystery was gone and the characters were stuck in a no win scenario that made fans constantly tried to pull a Kirk move to make it a winnable thing for the crew. The mystery in the dark aether story is what's keeping me invested right now

I feel like Outbreak is the best thing that’s happened to Zombies since Zombies Chronicles. The community has asked for an open world experience for years, and Treyarch *delivered*. It sucks that some people won’t acknowledge it simply because of the CoD cycle (though, to be fair, the mode was barebones at launch, but it’s FAR from that now), but hey, it’s still incredible nonetheless. And yes, both Legion and OB Survival are awesome!

Come on now. First of all, as you said, Outbreak is in its current state only like 8 MONTHS after its release, and after being updated nonstop just keep it afloat. But most importantly, even now, the whole experience is just dead boring: every single match plays the same and takes hours and hours on end, of running around empty spaces and doing objectives that are always the same (and most times super cheesable)

Round based plays the exact same every fucking time you boot it up, it’s been like this since World at War and it’ll always be the same. @@kapkant6197 that was definitely the START of it. There was enough going on in Black Ops 3 that it didn't feel as egregious as Black Ops 4, mainly the fact that Black Ops 3 zombies is, imo, the best zombies experience period, like Black Ops 3's narrative could stand on its own two feet. But stuff like McCain or Revelations just being a bunch of maps fused together and some other more nitpicky stuff do sort of sow the seeds for Black Ops 4's terribly rushed conclusion to Aether and Cold War/Vanguard's "Quick, shove as many Black Ops characters not involved in the Warzone plot into Zombies" strategy. Like, don't get me wrong, the McCain thing is fanservice, but its not nearly as bad as revealing this potentially new, interesting direction you have for Zombies is just Richtofen sneaking around again for the umpteenth time. which, side note, Black Ops as a whole has just dropped like, 3 or 4 storylines. You had the weirdass "Mason's daughter cloned and is dating Woods and everyone's ina simulation" thing in Blackout, you had Chaos which had lots of potential if they didn't cripple it by only giving it half the game alongside Aether's finale, you have whatever the fck is going on with Vanguard and Cold War's interconnectedness... they're real bad for just starting and stopping stuff

John, I must say that the format of your review series is one, that I think, is very underutilized in the KZread landscape. What I like most is that positives and negatives are split into their own sections, so that it gives a more objective analysis. So many other reviews, while still great, feel like the positives overshadow or downplay the negatives, and vice versa. With how people treat media as simple as "it's either God tier masterpiece, or a shit stain on creation," it's great to see someone finally give something where credit is due, and when something needs to be properly criticized. One problem though is that it may feel "soulless." Not saying that you don't care, but it may feel very confined and straightforward like watching a lecture rather than a talk with a friend. Overall, some good stuff.

I always held Outbreak in extremely high regard for a few reasons, especially as someone who's been a zombies sweat since WaW days. The break from the norm was very welcome in my opinion, while Tortured Path tried to break away, that human rights violation of a zombies "mAp" just sucked outright, despite how good some of the WW2 zombies maps were. Outbreak on the other hand is a pretty relaxing mode to play, while there aren't crazy differences in each game you play, that goes for the zombies mode as a whole either way. Despite Outbreak being one of my favourite zombies experiences I absolutely do not think this is what should take over round based, the literal reason I did not buy Vanguard is because I saw what the zombies ended up being like and it is miserable through and through. The mode would best suit exactly how it worked in Cold War, which now that the season's been concluded for many months it has really grown into an impressive zombies game (despite how little time they've been given fuck you Activision). Outbreak especially has grown and developed over the season and about halfway between Mauer and Forsaken, became a surprisingly fleshed out mode with some impressive replayability and enjoyment, while still retaining that classic "hop on for a chill game of zombies" energy. These reviews have been amazing though, and I honestly believe that despite the other zombies games being many years old it would be cool to see a review series on the older zombies games. Though, you'd have to endure many hours of some of the most miserable zombies experiences ever (ahemIW).

A few of my own thoughts and opinions: - I'm surprised you barely touched on the mode's update history. To me personally, I feel like that's part of the reason it wasn't well received. When the mode first launched in season 2, it was a brand new experience the likes of which we'd never seen before. So much space and unprecedented freedom. But the initial wonder went away pretty quickly. The mode suffered from the same problems which Der Anfang now faces, in that it felt really "underbaked" at launch with only 3 maps (Alpine, Ruka and Golova) and no easter egg quest. It might not seem like a big deal, but it's hard to remember the last time we had a zombies map of any kind without a main quest. Long-time players like myself found Outbreak at launch to be really shallow. Besides levelling up weapons, grinding challenges or just trying to see how high of a round you can make it to, there was no "end goal" to work towards, and I think that's why a lot of players dropped off initially. - The Holdout objectives are probably my personal favourites. It reminds me of playing a bare-bones map like Nacht der Untoten or COD WWII's Groesten Haus. Just you and your buddies, locked in a tiny room with just an ammo box, some breakable crystals, a bunch of boarded up windows and endless hordes of zombies that slowly ramp up as the timer ticks down, until by the end all the windows are broken as you desperately circle-strafe around a massive horde as you beg the clock to reach 0. Sometimes, that's all you really need. - The loot crates play a modified version of the Coalesence Corporation jingle from BO3's campaign when you're close. I just thought that's a nice touch. - The Legion fight would be so much more bearable if there weren't endless hordes of every special enemy in the game at once. That's the reason why it's the only easter egg in Cold War I still haven't completed. I've tried going solo, I've tried going with 1, 2, 3 friends who all knew what they were doing. We've tried having an MMO raid setup with a dedicated DPS, healer and tank. Every single time the hordes ended up overwhelming us. A random Mimic would grab someone, or someone would get stuck between a Soldat and a wall, or whatever. That's why I've given up on trying to defeat this motherfucker. - I'm also not a big fan of the black chest world event. It just doesn't feel challenging enough IMO. All you really do is stand in place and shoot an orb as it flies past while dodging zombies, rinse and repeat until all 3 orbs have been destroyed. The amount of zombies it throws at you never really poses a challenge unless you shoot all 3 orbs at once. And the rewards you get from it are great, but they feel really situational. If you get the chest on round 1 that's great, you get a free pack-a-punch and get to save 5000 points for something else. But if you get it on round 2 or 3, chances are by then you already have 1 or 2 weapons which you've already packed once, so there's no reason to do the chest unless you want a few extra points. - This is moreso a comment on the Firebase maps themselves, but Treyarch really put a lot of time and effort into these places, getting all the little details right, the maps feel so genuine and lived in. See, my family comes from Belarus, one of the former Soviet republics, and although we emigrated to Canada in 2000, I've gone back to visit relatives several times and I've seen places in real life that look exactly like Golova, Ruka, Zoo, etc. Right down to the tiniest details, like if you go into the little cafes in Golova, you'll see old-school cash registers and scales, and the menu will have traditional Slavic comfort food on it like borsht, uha and rassolnik. Even though Outbreak can feel like Treyarch haphazardly slapped zombies into multiplayer maps, there's so much thought put into the maps themselves.

your clearly forgetting or are unaware of the best part of the black chest reward is the ghost/spirt thing that spawns in and saves you by killing all zombies around you if your about to go down and health is at 40 or lower. that alone is always worth doing it. has saved my many times from taking a down.

  • @LuvzToLol21

    @LuvzToLol21

@@Tyler_82 Yeah I know about the ghost. But here's my problem with it. First of all, you can only carry one extra life ghost at a time, so if you already got the black chest on round 1 there's basically no reason to do it again if it comes up again on round 3. And, as Rizzo mentioned, with the way the difficulty scaling works the first 3-4 rounds are really easy. Plus, there's no denying that Outbreak takes a very long time depending on what you're doing. Just setting up for the Legion easter egg while doing all the main and optional objectives over 5 rounds before you get to the Ruka silos takes about an hour, especially if you're playing solo. A lot of people just prefer to exfil out at round 3-5 because they get bored or are grinding guns. And lastly, while I'm not denying that the extra life ghost is a great perk, it still doesn't help that the core black chest gameplay of sitting around and shooting orbs is really boring.

18:24 from what I understand, the initial launch maps were actually not designed for outbreak originally, they were designed for Warzone, being designed more like Blackout, but they couldn’t port it over to the WZ engine properly and so just made Verdansk 84. So that’s why their designs are really similar and too wide open, it was made as a BR PVP experience originally

absolute best!!!!! thing to happen to zombies since the first easter egg came out! its an epic mode that should be the way zombies moves forward in the future! round base maps are decent dont get me wrong but after ya do the main quest on that said map it gets boring very fast!! i really really think and hope that 3arch will give us an even better version of outbreak in there next game!! cold war in general was a great great game! zombies especially!!! 3arch really knocked it outta the park with this game as a whole but absolutely rocked it with outbreak!!!!

Great review Rizzo! However I was hoping you'd mention how bland the gameplay can get inspite of how much there is to do. For me, in spite of how much I too appreciate the freedom of approach you have in Outbreak, the fact alone that you'll be doing the same objectives repeatedly got old pretty quick. To circumvent this, part of me always wished they'd add modifiers of some sort; be it map weather changes, increased special/elites spawns or changes to standard zombie behaviour. As much as everyone laments Vanguard, I think combat modifiers alongside it's addition of Covenants would contribute to a psuedo-fresh feeling experience.

Great review Rizzo. It's not a perfect comparison but Outbreak from CW feels like a better executed bo4 mutations to me. The community was so excited by the idea of customizing a match from the very start with bo4 mutations, but the overwhelming volume of customizability scared off a lot of people, even hardcore players (also disabling easter eggs was super dumb). Outbreak gives you true freedom to completely change your gameplay at a moment's notice, instead of being something you have to commit to for the entire match, which fits a lot better imo.

  • @aurelionight

I honestly did enjoy Outbreak a lot. I had (and still have) concerns that it'll overtake round-based completely due to the fact that you can easily reuse (larger) MP maps for it, but I think that's going to happen eventually. Already /is/ happening to a certain extent with Vanguard, so the quicker you come to terms with that the better, I think.

easiest way to do the legion boss is nearly kill all 3 orbs without breaking one to lessen the time inside the closed cirlce`s, with more bosses, dont use a wonder weapon and it spawns less bosses, dual wield amp will be the easiest spawns as they are pistol classed, hopefully anybody struggling to do this is helped
