Outbound Lighting: Evo & Hangover Bike Light Testing

We take bike light testing seriously here at Outbound Lighting. Watch as our testing manager takes a lap down Bell Pass in Scottsdale, AZ to put the Hangover helmet light and the new Trail Evo Bike Light with it’s quick-release mount through its paces in a field of sharp, loose rocks on the steep side of the McDowell Mountains.

I really appreciate that you left your humanity in-tact with this. Light looks awesome, and it's nice to see that you aren't trying to cover up the well known fact that riding in the dark will never be as easy as full daylight.

Just got my Outbound Trail Evo and Hangover setup a few weeks back, and can’t be happier. I’ve been riding at night for over 15 years and this is my third lighting setup. The Outbound lights are the best ones I’ve ever used, by far. Great job thinking of everything guys! I love having the piece of mind of carrying a small portable charger, and can velcro it to my helmet if my night ride runs long and I need more juice for the helmet light. Being able to charge the light while it’s on is a fantastic feature. All of my riding buddies are jealous, and two have already made the switch to Outbound.

These videos don't do these lights justice. The Original Outbound Trail will never leave my bar. People that ride in front of me always appreciate the extra spread as well.

One of the best lights I’ve ever owned. Had a big fall not long ago and surprisingly only the strap was torn off. Outbound kindly replaced it and had a new strap within days. Thank you again Outbound Lighting.

I've had the original Trail light for nearly two years and it's THE BEST. This looks so freaking great. Well done!

Great video! I've been watching every bit of info about the Evo that hits the web over the last few weeks. It looks like an amazing light. I'd love to see a video like your last one where you compare bar light only, helmet only, both, Evo vs Trail vs Hangover..... Super stoked!

The use of USB C, 21700s, TIR optics, smart mounting and the fact that yall put a vertical cutoff on the road model goes to show that there are some smart people working at outbound lighting, and has guaranteed this combo to be my first bike light setup

Looks like another fantastic light added to an already stellar line of MTB light options... is its main benefit that it's a self contained single light compared to earlier helmet + handlebar combinations? I've got a combo set up from Outbound that's a few years old. It's always been amazing but I wonder if this would be a suitable replacement for the FLOOD of light I get from that earlier model/system. Main question is would I sacrifice light spread/quantity to gain features of compact/self contained light? Thanks for great products test driven by a real person (including a digger in the video leaves me feeling far less intimidated) and for keeping notification emails to a minimum... much respect for this! Best, Matt

You'll actually get MORE spread/quality AND quantity with this new Evo light. We've learned a lot developing optics in the last 3 years, along with some pretty cool advances in LED tech (namely the new CREE XD16 chips) that lets us get far more efficiency. Combine that with two power dense 21700 cells that provide nearly the same power as the 4-cell 18650 pack it's quite a light. We are really excited to get this light in everyone's hands and really reset the bar.

@@OutboundLighting Thanks for the reply... I realized your Hangover helmet light looks to be an upgrade from the older Outbound helmet light I have too. I'm trying to understand if the Evo is more light than both the helmet and bar lights I have now so that adding a Hangover isn't 'necessary' as a result. Thanks... and if there's a link on your website or somewhere for the answer I'll sure check it out... Best, Matt

Road market not doing so well?

  • @OutboundLighting

Actually is doing really well. We are working on a new road specific light to come out this year. Since we are just a 2-man development team, in between building and shipping lights, we can't just easily introduce a new product without significant time and investment. So we prefer to develop one really good product every year, and focus on building the business otherwise. 2019 was Hangover, 2020 was Evo, 2021 will be a yet-to-be-named Road lamp. :)

@@OutboundLighting A new product every year is very impressive and even more so for a small team. Just wondering cause one out of 4? lights was for the road when I checked the website.

@@difflocktwo Sorry if it sounded snarky. We get a lot of people who seem to think we are just rebranding chinese lights, instead of understanding how much work goes into each lamp we design and tool up. When we launched Outbound Lighting it started with 2 variations of the same lamp, Road and Trail Edition, only difference was the reflector. Then had a lot of people wanting a helmet light so we developed Hangover as the lightest helmet-specific lamp out there, then had a lot of people clamoring for wireless internal battery setups. Since Trail was outselling Road by a lot (since roadies for the most part don't want to deal with battery packs), we focused on developing Trail Evo to respond to that demand. Now that we have a wireless setup for the trail handlebars and helmet, now we are shifting back to the road market with a wireless setup to come later this year (2021) and then a tail light to follow soon after. Ditching external battery packs and focusing solely on improving the internal battery configurations has really helped grow Outbound by leaps and bounds, it's clearly what people want. :)

@@OutboundLighting Can the Trail Evo be used on the road? I like the self-contained aspect and maybe connecting to a Dyanamo hub or a battery pack on the fly. Already have the Hangover, but want something on the bars that'll charge quick without a wall jack.
