Out Running an $80,000 Nissan GTR on Track With an $8,000 Mazda RX8 - Almost Spun the Car!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

David VS Goliath is every face off between most Rotary Engine Cars and their Piston counterparts. Momentum, Grip, and confidence behind the wheel of any car and you can be a force to be reckoned with on the track. The RX8 put on a clinic for me this weekend, I learned a lot about the car and what it can take on a 100 plus degree day! Plus the bonus of lapping some much faster cars.. Great Day at the Track!

I feel your pain, I don't know how many times over the past 20+ years of track days in my old 240sx's or FR-S that I get behind a Corvette, Mustang, Camaro, M3, GTR etc that is fast on the striaghts, but slower in the corners. They would hold me up for lap after lap. Some would eventually give me a point by, but some would do it on the straight away and they wouldn't back off the gas? Hah, total d*ck move. I think it's just an ego thing and they don't want to admit that their 500+hp expensive sports car is slower on track than a cheap Japanese car, haha. I love it.

Nice vid. I have an RX8 track car and indeed, I can often keep up (or pass) with quite a number of big-powered cars as long as the driver is a notch below my skill level. Or even sometimes they are good drivers, but they are still on the OEM tires (300+ TW rated stuff), And by the back half of the session, all that power has simply turned those poor tires greasy and they can’t drive as confidently. Same with the brakes. The nice thing about the RX8 (or my Miata) Is the superb balance and fairly low weight means it doesn’t beat on the tires and brakes so much, and you can go 10/10 for an entire session with no worries.

I completely understand the advantage of light cars. At a track day I did in my 2004 Volvo S60R I had to point by a number of Miata’s, because they could hold their momentum through the corners. My car has 300hp, brembos, and weighs 3,500 pounds. Which overall isn’t a bad combo, but a car with less than half the power but like 1,500 pounds less could easily smoke me. Granted it was also my first track day so I didn’t have a whole lot of experience or confidence. My dad took his 2007 GT500, which probably makes like 500whp roughly. Lowering springs and lower control arms the only handling mods he had done. And that thing weighs like 3,900 pounds. He had to let a Fiesta ST pass him multiple times. The fiesta was properly setup with good suspension, tires, bolt ons, etc. and that thing was moving. So I realized how much of a benefit a light car is.

In the tight constant turns, 40mph is 40mph. Soon as the straightaways came, of course I got decimated but it was the king of turns. Right up there with my NA Miata I had too. No power at all but a total threat in the turns

You need to settle down dude. GT-R driver seems to be new to track days and/or that track, you can clearly see them brake early & sedately and continue braking once turned in, as well as mid-corner braking. Besides the fact that they’re probably going six-tenths and not nine-tenths like you because they don’t want to risk crashing a much more expensive car that’s not as easily replaceable. You can’t hear a hint of tyre squeal from the Nissan so they’re not pushing it. Neither was the ‘vette. Did you go and speak to the drivers and ask them what tyres and brakes they had?, let alone how experienced they are?

Great result and good work there with the underdog Rx8 although they are getting a good reputation for fast track cars ….ps your 8 could do with some more power, as it seems slower than what it should be….what are your compression numbers?

Anyone who has been in an RX8 knows they are literally one of the best handling cars ever produced..with sticky tires you have race car levels of grip as for the engines. Garbage they don't last more then 60 or 70k miles without the need of a rebuild..the automatics are pretty slow..the manuals are pretty quick but require a good launch off the line they make small amounts of torque these cars live and make there power above 7000rpm..great car for a track with long straights and a few sharp turns .

I probably saw 230s water temps, and oil temps were 255ish. it burped some water midday, I would say as long as you have coolant in the engine, and it doesn't super overheat 250+ that the irons would be ok.

Also dont want to waste my hard earned money on the wrong build. I do enjoy his driving and most of the commentary, but the biased hate on the other drivers/ cars kinda sucks. I seriously doubt there’s only 8k into this RX8. Tires, wheels, brakes, etc. The GTR is probably bone stock with older street tires, driven by a not so confident owner that probably bought it in retirement and not too crazy on pushing it to the limits because he plans on enjoying it the rest of his life. I’m not disagreeing that even amateur drivers will almost always be faster, safer, more confident in a lighter nimble car. Also, this guy in video is a great driver

People pass Ferraris in GTIs and Integras. Those high-end cars will always be better, as they were tested on tracks in development. However, the owner has to be willing to push it’s limits and most aren’t. Not unless they’re gajillionaries that could replace it tomorrow.
