Out of Place: The Trans Chinese Community Fighting for Gender Equality (Part 2)

Ойын-сауық

On this episode of 'VICE INTL,' we check back in with members of the transgender community in China to see how they're fighting for equality in the region. VICE China revisits Bobbie, a trans woman who's just undergone gender reassignment surgery, and Mr. C, a trans man who's working to educate the public about transgender issues in order to combat discrimination.

In case you missed the first episode, here's a quote I find beautiful and very inspirational: "I'm ready to face any hostility this world has in store. Some kinds of beauty are beyond gender. When you stop judging people by their sex to see if they are handsome or pretty, all their charms come from the inside. You exude good upbringing and refinement. Your gentle temperament can handle all the ruthlessness in this world. Then I believe everyone would be moved by this. It's the beauty of your soul and not the charm of your looks."

@@admiralspire8867 bruh he didn't lie he made it clear that he is trans, and he is not a woman disguising as a man. :/ he's a man with female body parts. sex and gender are completely different. and your right, if the girlfriend decides to leave she has every right. but have some respect and understanding of what he's going through. it's super sad that the government make laws for others against trans people when they're doing nothing wrong and living a valid life. being trans is not a disease, or invalid so use his correct pronouns he/him because he is a man.

I wasn't expecting this video to receiving more hates than likes. This is about a problem that a portion of the world population is suffering from. I don't understand it completely either. But I have to start some where, and I am trying to understand it in order to be a better human and not to offend a person who is going thru this. But after reading the comments I am sad and scared to know what these people go thru every day of their lives. I think they are one of the most strongest people in the world. Any one who has the guts to live on while all this shit is thrown their way in my eyes are Bigger than life. Some day ( i hope in my life time) we would see a world that understands them and accept them as a part of our society.

The louder the hatred, the greater the sexual desire. Those of us who feel secure in our gender identity or sexual orientation can't care less about the choices made by others. However, self-repressed homossexuals often resort to extreme manifestations of homophobia (and, by extension, transphobia, as they can't tell the difference between gender and sexuality).

*M.D. Geist* You are the one that need to educate yourself about homosexuality (even if transsexuality are the thing this doc are about), "reaction to a childhood trauma"??? From whom did you learn that? Your local uneducated self-proclaimed pastor? There is actually a study about gay men that shows you are more likely to be gay if you have a lot of men around you before you are born, if you for ex. getting born into a family with already 3 older brothers or many male cousins. It´s natures way of reducing the competition of later getting a wife. The study didn´t contain females as I said, but think it´s the same thing there. There´s another study that shows that being exposed to much testosterone during pregnancy makes a female fetus lesbian and a male fetus exposed to more of oestrogene becomes gay, this one I don´t know if it´s scientific facts or a popular and believable theory. Anyway, learn how to respect others even if you are a fanatic religious or a right/wing extremist...

I think they should get to know the person a bit before sharing their story with them. It's a good thing that if they can get their recognition, but before that, I think they should be united and form their own community and network in order to survive. I never have hope for Asia, when you look back in history. Perhaps move to North America or euro is a better option.

They were Chinese. Bobbi (whose father was from England and mother from Hong Kong) was in Thailand for surgery and moved there (I think) because she experienced less transphobia there. Some of the people were women, some men, some identified with other non-binary gender identities and at least one (from part 1) was gender fluid (that means not sticking to the same gender norms or identity all the time). Gender is a social construct that consists on a bunch of rules and expectations that people are pressured to follow based on their biological sex/their genitals. Much of these rules and expectations are arbitrary (so really meaningless). They differ from place to place and have differed historically but currently almost all are based on patriarchal systems of power. So really, the rate of conformity to gender roles and identities, that are not biological but are social constructs, can be seen as the more confusing and strange phenomenon

M.D. Geist Well, being trasgender is not considered a mental illnes, therefore people who are trasgender are not insane and it is actually a very ignorant observation for you to make as you have no scientific proof to back you up. Second of all, this is the definition of civilization "an advanced state of human society, in which a high level of culture, science, industry, and government has been reached." So, I consider that letting people live their lifes in freedom as long as they are not hurting anybody is closer to the definiton of civilization than saying that people are insane just because they decide to do whatever they feel like with their body and the way they live their life. Also, homosexuality and transexuality have been dated back to the first registered civilizations, so, they have been a part of civilizaton ever since the concept itself was created. But then again, if you still disagree with this way of living, you're completly free to do so, just let the rest of the world be free to do what they want as well.
