Controversy around compensation under the Agnipath scheme got reignited after Congress MP Rahul Gandhi accused Defence Minister Rajnath Singh of stating untruths on the issue. Singh had said the Centre had given a Rs 1 crore compensation to the family of Ajay Singh, the 23-year-old Agniveer who died in the line of duty in January. The government said Rs 98.39 lakh has been paid to Ajay Singh and the balance will be given out soon. However, the Congress says the Rs 98.39 lakh consists of Rs 50 lakh given as insurance payout by State Bank of India, and that the government is taking a false credit. Col (retd.) Rohit Chaudhary, Chairman, Ex-Servicemen Dept, AICC, spoke to The Federal on this subject in an exclusive interview. He said there are systemic failures, and the Centre is not serious about defence forces and martyrs.
