Ouray Colorado | Mesa Verde | Black Canyon of the Gunnison

This is the last part of our two week trip out west to Utah and Colorado. We leave Moab, Utah and travel south east to Mesa Verde National Park. We then drive the million dollar highway to Ouray, Colorado where we camp at the Ouray KOA ( koa.com/campgrounds/ouray/ ). The next day we travel south back down the million dollar highway and to explore the San Juan National Forest. After exploring the San Juan National Forest, we drove back to Ouray and enjoyed dinner at Gold Belt Bar & Grill ( goldbeltbarandgrill.com/ ). The next morning we picked up breakfast at Timberline Deli of Ouray. Our finial destination was the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

Mesa Verde is amazing. We took the tour, and it is something you need to go back and do if you haven't already. We went in October, and the Million Dollar Highway was breathtaking because the aspen were electric yellow against the evergreens. We actually went to that area 2 years in a row because the first year there was the government shutdown the day after we got to out there, and all of the national parks and government grounds were closed. Even the national forests. We spent a week just driving the backroads and visiting some state sites. Black Canyon of the Gunnison was one of our stops the second year, and it is totally mind blowing! The lighting on all the different colored rocks is so beautiful. We saw the sand dunes from a distance and didn't climb them. Happy camping 😊.

The canyon at the end was really spectaculaaarrrrr! Million dollar highway was steep and that waterfall was amazing! Tioga Pass from Lee Vining up is pretty steep too. My parents took us up there when we were kids in the early 70's and it was still a one lane dirt road with pullouts. I remember it like yesterday. My Mom really hated it. My Dad, brother, and I thought it was cool.

We stopped over in Ouray while we were out west July of 2019. That fall in town is amazing! We also stopped at that hot spring on the million dollar highway. However we went the opposite direction coming down from Estes Park across the continental divide in RMNP, Grand Lake (y'all would love that little town), Glenwood Springs (Hiked to Doc Holiday's grave site), then on to Rifle Falls state park, down to Ouray, Silverton (a step back in time), Durango, then the Mesa Verde (we were equally "geeked" out), 4 corners, New Mexico, Amarillo (like I said on one of your other vids, Palo Duro Canyon is pretty awesome) then made our way back to Benton. We bought concert tickets (Cody Jinks 🤠) for Red Rocks and planned our vacay around that. 10 days out west was fun, but no place like HOME!

Next FYI, most locals will tell you it's pronounced "your-ray" or "yer-ray"...but almost always with the "ya" sound on the front. When you go back(you know you will), I encourage you to check out some of the Alpine Loop trails, definitely check out Animas Forks. For the most part they are mild offroad trails with fantastic scenery, just stay away from Black Bear and Poughkeepsie gulch. Also Clear Lake outside of Silverton...if you're feeling really saucy you could even bike up to Clear Lake. 2000ft elevation rise up to 12,200...so make sure you're really feeling saucy. :) Probably need to plan for a few weeks later for snow to clear...although things will be more crowded then too...anyway, once again love the videos...keep it up guys.

@@CodyandKellie I moved to Colorado after waiting most of my life (long story!). You may be concentrating on southern Colorado if you are driving from Arkansas, but could I suggest Collegiate Peaks? near actually overlooking Buena Vista...and everything else. lol They go straight up, are so high, are lined up like soldiers and actually represent the Continental Divide. They have Ivy League college names, of course. It is a BILLION dollar scenic view looking from the East side. Can't say about trails, but there are several Campgrounds and food there. Go river rafting in very popular Brown's Canyon if the water is not too high (the raft companies keep track of water levels). By the way, a small note, Spanish names in Colorado are ALL pronounced as if in English, so this town is bew-na-vista, or bewnie (spell Buny) for short. A personally review: Aspen/Aspen Valley is beautiful but too remote. Vail is a pretty V-shaped valley but a boring tourist trap :(

When you are in Ouray Colorado, you do not want to miss the Perimeter Trail that gains 1000 feet in elevation and surrounds the town with spectacular scenes, and it is six miles in length. It is an unforgettable experience!! By the way, I drove the million dollar highway pulling my rv and did not burn up my brakes using a low gear and did not accelerate excessively between the tight curves. ENJOY!!!

If you're still there or going back you should hit up the Royal Gorge Bridge and Garden of The Gods too. You could probably spend a lifetime in that state and not need to go anywhere else, haha.
