    They've been vague in the past but we've gotten enough context clues to assume they grew up in a conservative religious environment, but hearing all of this really drives it home. Married at 20/21 with kids by 25? No concept of what lesbian, gay, bisexual means? Missionaries? Their upbringing is so freaking interesting. Kudos to their wives for having faith through the really hard financial times and kudos to them for the sheer amount of work ethic it must've taken to get to this point. I feel new respect for them that goes deeper than surface level.

Our whole world had been turned upside since leaving the Mormon faith where we had been fiercely devout for our entire lives. We lost friends, we lost family, we were reprimanded, outcast, ignored and worse. It took time and tears but it was worth it. Best decision I've ever made and the only decision I could have made while remaining authentically me This is the first time I'm listening to ear biscuits and I'm loving hearing about your journey. All those college students you presented to, all those people at the Christmas Conference, no one has seen your videos on KZread and recognized you and commented on a video saying I know these guys, they presented to me in Campus Crusade? It is so interesting to me how this part of your lives has been the lost years. I completely respect your decision to not share it in the past and your decision to share it now! Tyler Hostetter what’s the major difference

  • @RougeEric

    @RougeEric

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@tylerhostetter9528 To my understanding, the major difference is scale and borad social acceptance (as in most people finding the belief "normal" instead of "marginal). Now if you want to dig a bit deeper into each words' definition, a short definition of a religion is a socio-cultural system (practices, morals, worldviews, etc.) with the supernatural or spiritual as its main subject. On the other hand, a cult has come to refer to a social group with unusual religious, spiritual or philosophical beliefs. So in fact, all religions started as cults before they became "normalized" in society, usually through reaching significant scale or by becoming an integral part of a region's culture. Arguably, in an area or context where a religion is uncommon or absent, if someone were to start a group around said religion, it would be a cult. Now, without getting too deep here, evangelism (especially in its most extreme forms) is extremely close to what people think of as "cults". So though @Todd Fischer's comment is unclear, it does somewhat relate to the subject.

But where I'm from they used friendship, community, even food and games, to entice people to attend, feel comfortable, then peer-pressure them to convert. It always felt underhanded to me similar to tricking a kid with candy to do something for you. It's as if they knew they couldn't convince you thru the merit of their beliefs alone.

    I love that you found joy in going to church / being apart of the crusades. When I was younger, my family was religious. When I got older, we drifted from our religion. When I was 20 I began to find God again and came back to the church. (The disillusioned thing is so legit lol). A lot of the people I know haven’t found their way back and I’m not sure how they feel about my choice but I feel good knowing that y’all speak well of the church ⛪️

    At 27, Link, hearing you talk about what your dad did by giving you a job... I'm going through the same thing right now, and it means a lot to hear that it's not just me. I feel like it's such a unique position to work for a father running a business who knows it's not what you want to do, but gives it to you anyway to help you out. It means a lot to hear someone else went through it.

    Am I the only one who saw this coming? When I listened to their history before I literally thought Rhett could have been a missionary when he talked about traveling after college. I feel like it might be because I grew up in church as well and their vibe is just so distinctive of a youth/worship leader. I always wondered how they weren’t religious because their humor is so wholesome you could play any of it in church.

    This explains more about how the guidelines of religion stifle personal growth and personal thought. I equate it to never passing a 5 yr old's ability to question because when they ask adults "why", the response is "BECAUSE I SAID SO!" or, "BECAUSE THAT'S THE WAY IT'S ALWAYS BEEN." I believe there are people who get stuck in life and never even think to question anything - because then what is their world? Loving this series!
