Our Town: Hazard | Kentucky Life | KET

Both Hazard and Perry County were named in honor of a naval hero of the War of 1812, Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry (of "We have met the enemy, and they are ours" fame). Hazard is also known as "the Queen City of the Mountains" and Amy Hess takes a look at the town's origins and what it has to offer to both residents and visitors.
Hess makes stops at the Treehouse Café, a popular downtown restaurant, and gets a hands-on science lesson at the Challenger Learning Center of Kentucky. At Bobby Davis Museum and Park, Hess learns about the history of the museum's revered namesake, a World War II veteran who was killed at the end of the war.
We also meet former mayor Nan Gorman, who reflects on the legacy of her late husband, Bill Gorman, mayor of Hazard for more than three decades.

Back in 1983 I was in the Job Corps in Prestonsburg, Ky. There were a few guys there at the Job Corps that were from Hazard. One weekend we went to a "Black Gold" festival there in Hazard. Funny thing at the time there were a few businesses there with the name of Boss Hogg. I had always wondered what ever happened to those guys I made friends with. I left in 1984. One of them was a short guy that had long blond hair by the name of Roy ( do not remember last name). Then there were these 2 brothers with the last name of Gibson, I simply called them the Gibson brothers ( I do not remember their first names) Hazard was a cool place to visit.

My Dad was from Hazard, yet I know little about Hazard or his family. His name was Noah Day, but learned when his mother died, he was actually the child of Joe Olinger, and was taken away from the Day family to live with the Olingers. His mother's name was Junie McDaniel. Just wondering if anyone reading this knows any history of the McDaniel family. He loved the people and he hills of Hazard, and I hope to visit there one day. I was inspired to post this as I watch the flooded conditions of Hazard this last week of July, 2022. God bless you all. Sharon Olinger-Martin.

Wow, my family is from little leatherwood. My grandfather just passed away and it's so sad I have no one to tell me any of my family's history any more. I know my papaw was born in daisy camp. And then later on down the road upend up a body shop in hazard Kentucky called cecil's bodyshop. I was born & raised in Michigan but I know where my roots are and the blood that runs through me is nothing but eastern Kentucky.

A good idea is gas station because people always driving through. But a huge garden or goats or chickens could supply the local restaurants
