Our Town: Burkesville | Kentucky Life | KET

Burkesville, a town of about 1,500 people and one stoplight, wins over visitors with its friendliness and natural beauty. The Cumberland County town is often referred to as the Gateway to Dale Hollow because it borders the northern edge of the state park.
For a small town, it's left a significant footprint on the history of the Commonwealth. In 1829, a man boring for salt brine struck oil; Kentucky's Great American Well is believed to be the nation's first gusher. (The oil was bottled and sold as medicine.) In 1852, Joel Owsley Cheek, the Maxwell House coffee entrepreneur, was born in a house on the edge of town. During the Civil War, the Cumberland River area saw frequent fighting, and Gen. John Hunt Morgan raided the town. In the late 1800s, Burkesville served as a vital river port when transport by water was the only way to go.
Cumberland County tourism officials like to remind folks about the lasting impression the town left on naturalist John Muir, who passed through here in 1867 on his walk to the Gulf of Mexico:
"Burkesville, in beautiful location, is embosomed in a glorious array of verdant flowering hills. The Cumberland must be a happy stream. I think I could enjoy traveling with it in the midst of such beauty all my life."

My dad was born here and I've visited this place a few times. I have memories of staying at the Alpine Inn and overlooking the town. Such a beautiful part of the country. I cant wait for my next visit.

My mother was born and raised there. She was born in the 30's. She told many stories of being dirt poor and having to quit school in the 5th grade to work in the tobacco fields to help put food on the table for the very large family. People picked on them. Life was not so happy for her during those years. She could not wait to get away from there. She moved as a teen to Indiana. I also lived there for a brief period with my grandparents. I have very fond memories of my time there. My grandparents were so good to me. I loved going to school in Burkesville. My time was in the early 60's. The teachers really interacted with their students. We acted out so many nursery rhymes. They played games with us as a group at recess, like farmer in the dale, red rover, red rover, etc. I loved it. I so missed the school when I moved back to Indiana with my mom. Indiana schools was not as much fun for me. My grandparents and most of the family members are gone now. I do have a few family members still living there. I rarely ever go there now. But Burkesville will always have a special place in my heart.

All the negativity in the comments! I'm sure now with the CORONA your town wouldn't pull together like our little hometown? Heaven forbid you might love the quiet countryside along the Cumberland River? Decide to make this your home if you had children, knowing if something ever happen to you, that someone would be there for your kids. 🤷 Unhappy people always got something NEGATIVE TO SAY!

Folks here go out of their way to reject outsiders and they will run you and your family/business out of town(yes, Ive heard the stories of business being devastated by lies) I moved here in 2020, in 2022 I was working at Mikes Landing and was hearing some of the nastiest rumors, someone said I was selling meth, someone said I was a FED or I was running from the FEDs, someone had the nerve to say I was didlin children.. One day a woman approached me on the dock, told me she knew who I was, I said really I dont you.. She said "your the crazy minister that moved in down by river".. Ive decided to embrace my new title, nicest thing anyone has said about me here in Burkesville.
