I’m a 34 year old male and I cry all the time at movies and TV. In fact both of Paul Mescal’s projects (Aftersun and Normal People) made me cry or outright sob in a movie theater this year. Luckily no one sees movies like Aftersun in theaters around my way so no one saw me 😂.

My hand is WAY up as one of the people who uncontrollably sobbed at the ending of Aftersun, and still uncontrollably sobs while I continue to re-watch the ending to this day (to torture myself, clearly) . It's my #1 film of the year and I think that's about the 100th time I've either written that down somewhere. or have said it out loud to someone. It hurts, but in such a good way. I feel cathartic after watching this, over and over again. Something else I've said, as a film lover, I was moved, as a filmmaker, I was educated. Charlotte Wells...Damn.

So enjoyed hearing your choices, guys. I agreed with so many of your choices, and yet realized how much generational factors affect what moves us individually and corporally. I am in my early 50s, a die-hard cinephile, and yet, for reasons that more than likely stem from my position and age in life, led me to be horrified that something like TAR was just an honorable mention for you guys. Or that All Quiet on the Western Front was not even on your honorable mention. But it goes to show how your particular stage in life so affects what moves you most and speaks to what you are going through at the time (I would so love to have a conversation with you, Cole, about those things that are evolving in your particular life journey to which you alluded at one point). But you guys are so very articulate for your age and so adept at speaking about what moves and excites you that I can’t help but feel the infectious spirit of your enthusiasm, even when some of your choices for the best of the best mystify and yet thrill me. And, yes, that ending in Aftersun was cathartically devastating, in a way that really can’t be expressed in words. Bravo, dudes!!

@@manantial773 What do you mean? There's only one exclusively thematically LGBT+ movie (Joyland) + 6/10 of these I saw at film festivals, I didn't go out seeking for them. Having a LGBT character doesn't make a movie inherently an LGBT movie, they're simply just characters existing who's sexuality has nothing to do with the plot nor furthers it. I already have been Banshees and loved it (Colin Farrell is my favourite actor), didn't care for the other two though.

We’ve seen Banshees 4 times in our film group and everyone chewed a different bone. There are a lot of layers and we’re still debating what happens at th.end. No footprints For Colm first look. Then closeup of his burned clothes. So is Colm a ghost? Pádraic sez he’ll take care of the dog any time with a bittersweet sad sm8le.

I saw Bros in cinema. It was funny and is worth watching but I think the entire museum subplot perfectly encapsulates a lot of the criticism of the film and Eichner in general. It does the exact thing it claims to be critiquing. Bros is fun but Fire Island was better, IMO. I'm glad both films exist though! Anyway, my favourite films of 2022 were Belle, Alcarràs, Lullaby, Bones and All and Official Competition.

Aftersun messed me up so bad. I felt such a sense of dread of what was going on, and the fact that you really do just experience it all through show and not tell, is so impactful. Letting the audience get to that emotional level without forcing it on them. Heartbreaking and devastating. I wish that The Whale had come out at a different time because I feel that Paul Mescal really could’ve pulled that best actor win.
